SuryaprakAsh@hamsadhwani on Feb 23rd,2009
-----------------------------------------------------------
Accompanied by MA krishnaswamy- violin , neyveli nArAyanan - mridangam

This concert was for 2 hours and 50 minutes and was advertised in the paper as mahasivarAthri and dandapAni desigan special.

MahasivarAthri dose:
----------------------
1. sivalOka nAdhanai (??) - MAyamAlavagowlai - GKB
2. nAda thanu maNisham (??)- cittaranjani -T
4. evarunnAru - mAlavashree - T
6. jaya jaya padmanAbha(R) - maniraNgu - ST
7A. akshayalinga vibhO (R N S T) -shankarAbharanam - md
16 mins alApanai , 6 mins of violin return.
neraval in "badarI vana mUla nAyikA sahita " 7 mins neraval in keezh kAlam and 4 mins in mEl kAlam and swaras for 10 minutes
7B. tani for 9 minutes
9. vishwesharu darisaNu - sindhubhairavi - ST

The mahasivarAthri dose was very good to excellent, I missed the first two only the manirangu and mAlavashree (I dont like this krithi that much). SuryaprakAsh takes the best of musicians padanthara , the case in point was the main s'bharanam . That was more like semmangudi mamA , particularly singing in tara sthayi in shankarAbharanam for a long duration is extreme tight rope walking between the two kAmbOdhi mountains . He sang beautifully and gave a superb neraval alApanai and swaras.

Miscellaneous dose :
----------------------
Not centered on lord shiva or dandapAni desigan
10A. viruththam "thirumAlin sOdhariyE" - desh + hamsAnandi + darbAri kAnadA
10B. madurai arasAlum - mega rAgamaliga - madurai somu
11. pavamAna

The miscellaneous dose had a lot of attention from all rasikas , what a beautiful number is madurai arasAlum , Somu must have captivated with his musical excellence striking very high in emotive content with the sequencing of rAgas capturing in essence different diety names , suryaprakAsh had caught up wonderfully with somu here , the viruththam in desh and darbAri was brilliant.

Tani by nArayanan was very good , I missed a lot of sarvalaghu play, but overall was very good. The violinist played good only from RTP onwards , his s'bharanam play was very mediocre and his manirangu was srirAgamish.

DandapAni desigan dose:
----------------------
3. pAda veNdumE isai (R ,S) - hamsanAdam - DD
5. nalvAzhkayE nAlum veNdum(R) - kOkilam - DD
8. RTP in bhAvAni
8 mins rAgam , 7 mins tAnam and
14 mins pallavi + swararAgamAliga in bhAvani + sArangA + hindOlam + behAg
pallavi line was "uNNai inri vEru thuNai yArayyA murugaiyyA "

These 3 numbers were the best in the concert . the hamsanAdam krithi was superb ,he sang it quite slowly giving lot of importance to lyrics and it was for a change far different then the usual 5th gear manavyALakincharA.

The RTP in bhAvani was new to me , it had lot of shades of bhavapriya , infact if he did not announce the rAga I would have not known the difference ,tAnam was superb for 7 mins outstanding manOdharmam. He announced at the beginning of pallavi that late Desigan is known to have excelled the bhAvani and he sang the pallavi line from his famous krithi .

SuryaprakAsh cut short the pallavi swaras in bhAvani , in the swararAgamALiga the sArangA swaras in high speed was outstanding , the hindOlam was typical MMI stuff definitely well rendered , the touch of behAg had its usual drowsy doze.

But to me the pick of the concert was the rAgam kOkilam and the song of Dandapani desigan .This rAgam I see that it is a janya of chakravAkham now in the bible . But to me the rAga contours were really superb and brand new , he just seemed to open a new leaf of experience for me , overall well researched and was well presented. The song rendition was also superb here.

Overall an excellent to outstanding concert. The only minus was that he could have sung for another 10 mins (go musicians go for always 3 hours ;) )just perhaps that he could have used it little more for the pallavi swaras for bhavAni.

2 quick questions:
----------------------
1. Is there a dandapani desigan rendition of bhAvani krithi "uNNai inri vEru thuNai yArayyA murugaiyyA".
2. Is there any musicians rendered the kOkilam rAgam , please give me pointers there?

I've heard bhavAni, swarasthanas are of the todi-like pratimadhyama mela. 44th mela. Bhavapriya

Rajesh,

What is the relation between Hamsanadam & Manavyala...?

Bhavani is a janyam of Bhavapriya w/o Panchamam I think.Dr.S.Ramanathan used to sing a song Bhavapriye Bhavani.Sowmya sings occasionally.

Pavani is a melakartha ragam. The song Partha Vizhi in film Guna is based on Pavani.

No relation of hamsanAdam and manavyAla, I must have meant bantureeti(slipped there), also in the rAgamAliga he sang hameerkalyAni and not hamsAnandi as I had posted. Perhaps must have not posted little late into night , I was bit over dozed ;)

He sang as bhavAni janyam w/o panchamam of bhavapriya. Incidentally I just heard that smt MLV has also sung this bhavAni beautifully (does any one have that recording).

Any recordings of kOkilam any where? If not suryaprakAsh can oblige to upload if that is ok?

My dear forumites

Thanks for the appreciation, this will certainly motivate me to take up more of challenging ragas and themes in my forthcoming concerts.

Actually I had a recording of just the song (Nalvaazhkaiye) in raga Kokilam by Shri.MMD as the reference to sing the alapana, but it was a more than sufficient demo of the raga contours...Such a masterly rendition by the legend.

As for Bhavani, I have listened to both MMD and MLV amma's recordings (of the song "Unnaiyanri") while touring Malaysia. A heart-wrenching melody-of-a-raga.

A disciple of mine has recorded the Hamsadhwani concert, I presume, will check it up.

I promise to upload whatever comes to my hand, ASAP.

With regards and affection

Surya

Thank you, Surya.
Hope your disciple would oblige us with the kokilam at least, to celebrate Desikar.
