KALAIMAMANI SHRI G HARISHANKAR’S ADMIRERS CIRCLE ORGANIZED A MEMORABLE REMEMBRANCE DAY TO SHRI G HARISHANKAR AS A FITTING TRIBUTE TO HIS SERVICE TO CARNATIC MUSIC

The day was 11th February, 2009 and the venue was Raga Sudha Hall in Mylapore. The place was reverberating with enthusiastic admirers of Shri G Harishankar and the occasion was his Remembrance Day being organized by his admirers as a fitting tribute for his contribution to Carnatic Music and led by his disciple Shri Nerkunam Sankar.

The evening started with a prayer song rendered by Kum Kamakshi. This gave a truly spiritual beginning to the function. Nerkunam Sankar welcomed the guests for the evening who had been kind enough to grace the occasion thereby confirming their respect and admiration for an artiste like Shri G Harishankar.

It was a memorable experience for all people gathered to view some of the audio visual clips of the stalwart taking them through nostalgic memory of the past. This was followed by speeches by Trichy Sankaran and Ghatam Shri Suresh who was the chief guest of the evening. They gave moving speeches of their long time association and memorable experience with Late Shri G Harishankar.

The day was also marked for honouring one of the senior most and experienced mridangam vidwan Trichy Shri Tayumanavan. He was presented with the Kalaimamani G Harishankar Memorial Award. The acceptance speech by Shri Tayumanavan was again highlighted by the respect he had for a vidwan like Shri G Harishankar and he mentioned it was a great honour to accept the same during the occasion. His speech was interspersed with emotion and simplicity. Finally the vote of thanks was given by Shri P B V Krishnamachari in a very subtle and unique way.

The final program for the evening was a laya vinyasam program and the participating artistes were Trichur Shri Narendran on Mridangam, Shri B S Purushottaman on Kanjira, Shir Vaikom Gopalakrishnan on Ghatam and Shri A S Krishnan on Morsing. These artistes were led by the one and the only one Trichy Shri Tayumanavan on Konnakkol.
It was a lively presentation which captured the imagination of all rasikas and mostly the laya vidwans who understand the intricacies and nuances of the art and relish each and every sollu.

All the members of the organizing committee were present viz. Nerkunam Shri Sankar ( Convenor & Secretary), Shri K Suriyanarayanan ( President), Shri V Suresh ( Vice President), Shri P B V Krishnamachari ( Joint Secretary) to make it a memorable evening on the whole with their continued presence.

The legend is not with us but his music , simplicity and his vidwat still lives and lingers on and fresh in our ears and will continue forever. A truly memorable tribute to a truly extraordinary kanjira vidwan.
