Yay! Here is mine. I have tried to stick to ragas that 1) Have a reasonable krithi base and 2) Are capable of elaboration at least as a sub-main. Thus favourites like Bageshri and Darbari have been eliminated. Also I have tried to avoid similar ragas - for example Suryakantam loses out to Sowrashtram, Saransangi to Charukeshi etc. The list (no particular order). Also including favourite krithis
Shuba Pantuvarali Ennalu Oorake - but generally poor in krithi content
Hansanandhi Needu Mahima - same as above
Hindolam Neerajakshi
Kapi Intha Sowkhya
Kharaharapriya Rama Neeyeda
Chakravakam Etulabrotovu
Kalyani Abhayamba
Kambhoji Mari Mari Ninne
Varali Kamakshi
Shanmukhapriya There is certainly scope for composers in this monumental raga - prefer RTPs at the moment.
Madhyamavathi Rama Katha Sudha
Sowrashtram Sree Ganapathi Nee
Abheri Nagumomu
Kamas Sujana Jeevana
Kalyanavasantham Nadalolodai
Charukeshi Kripalaya but generally poor in krithi content
Ramapriya Korinavaramu - as above
Kanada Sukhi Evvaro
Bhairavi Rakshabettarai
Saveri Sree Rajagopala

Did anybody get 'Informed Consent' from the ragas/participants to be included as everybody's favourite
To be totally valid this exercise should be double-blind; where the responder as well as the raga did not know their identity (masked) and only the Arbiter knows the raga being tested for universal favourite

I can't understand the omission of Hindustani Ragas (I mean the ones often heard in carnatic concerts, albeit mostly as tukkadas) from most people's lists...inability to be elaborated as sub-main/ main may not exactly be the ragas' fault
! In my top 20 there will certainly be place for Behag, Bagesri, Madhuvanti and may be a few others.

OK here goes VK: at times it was like pulling teeth, not knowing which ones to leave out...may be I need a top 40. I agree with the person who said how could anyone be told to pick their favourite children!
Anyway here is my top 20 list for now, in alphabetical order:
bEgaDa
behAg
bhAgESri
brindAvana sAranga
hameerkalyANi
hindOLam
kalyANi
kAmbhOji
kAnaDa
kApi
kEdAragowLa
kharaharapriya
kurinji
mOhanam
neelAmbari
SahAnA
sAranga
SenjuruTTi
varALi
yadukulakAmbhOji
The following were close contenders, some of these may climba back into the top 20 dislodging others depending on the time, place, mood, performer, etc.
aThAnA
dEvagAndhAri
khamAs
madhuvanti
nATTakurinji
reetigowLa
sAma
shanmukhapriya
Sreeranjani
tilAng
The above does not imply that I can't enjoy a very elaborate Shankarabharanam or Bhairavi or Purvikalyani or Todi or even a not so elaborate Vasanta or Saveri or Suddha Saveri or Asaveri or a very tukkada-ish sindhu bhairavi or maanD or Ranjani or .... oh my dear ragas, how am I going to look you in the eyes next time I run into any of you?
cheers

VK
The point is not to reel out a rigamarole of ragas but to provide justification as to why. In earnest let us start a competition game. Perhaps let us divide ourselves into say 3 or 4 teams. Each team fields say 4 ragas. The team members should flourish proof as to why those ragas are the 'best'. The debate can be 'hot' but must be decent. Provide proof if possible from sources such as sangeethapriya which can be listened to and dispassionately reeviewed. The discussions can be more on the lines of RTP appreciations which we ran at sangeetham erstwhile in which Vijay was a major participant. Unfotunately I am out of commission for the next ten days to organize one for the next ten days. I am floating the idea for all of your considerations. What is exciting about 'favourite raga(s) is not the 'what' but the 'why'.

cml,
Ones preferences and tastes need not follow logic - we certainly aren't robots. The emotional impact of a raga on humans varies a lot . So even if I come up with reasons as to why I like raga X more than raga Y, and you counter "but X doesnt have this technical quality that Y does. It is simple, Y is more refined. Your preference is out of whack". This still is not going convince me and go "boy! You know what? He is right. I should really be liking Y more than X!". My preferences will almost guaranteed to remain the same.
This ultimately is a popularity poll. The winner may or may not have any technical merit.

agreed. My drive is towards education. I value very much your views and analyses (likewise those of Vijay/ramakriya/vainika/.. whence I learn to appreciate the beauty of ragas hitherto unknown to me. There are many of us in the same boat! The question again is not 'winning' but an intellectual 'revelation'!

Just chanced upon this blog on Todi. Since the audio on laptop is dead due to overwork, I couldn't listen to the music clips
