Yesterday, I was attending a programme of Sri Annamayya. The artist announced a song which she was going to sing in the raga "Hindolam". I happen to notice the following prayogam

S N D M G R G S

To the best of my knowledge, Hindolam has no R in it or am I wrong or does this combination go under another name?

Happy to be clarified. Thanks

Sam - you are right there is no Ri in Hindolam. Maybe it was a slip up by the artist?

No, Mohan, I don't think the artist made the mistake and what I heard was very pleasant to the ears and note too, the specific use of G between which R is sandwiched and every time this prayogam came out as "G R G S". This looked like a well set pattern. Full use in a half an avarthanam went like

SGMDNSSS-SNDMGRGS ( that is 16 counts )

Well, I will wait for more comments....Thanks for your input...

Hindustani rag Hindhol has four swarams Sa Ga Ma Dha. The Ni is used on rare occasions but not the Ri.

Seems like the reference is to hindolavasantam sans pancamam. (i.e. usually the raga has the pancamam. Some versions of this raga drop the rishabham and some others use d2 instead of d1, but that is a different topic :)

Was this the song:

I got the lyrics in english in some other website with meaning. Here it is:

JagaDapu tsanavula jAjara
Saginala mantsapu jAjara
The festival of squabbling intimacy
The festival of decorated bedsteads.

mOllai turumula muDicina baruvuna
mOllapu sarasEpu muripEmuna
tsallana puppODi jAgarapatipai
tsallErativalu jAjara
With their coifs heavy with decked flowers, with affectionate dalliance, the women sprayed pollen all a tingling on Venkateswara.

bhArapu kucamula paipai kaDu sim-
gAramu nErapEdi gandhavODi
cEruvapatipai cindagapaDatulu
tsArElu jallEru jAjara
With their heavy breasts all decorated with sandal powder, the maidens sprinkled coloured powder on Venkateswara who was near them.

bEnkapu kUTani pEnagETi camatala
pankapu pUtala parimaLamu
vEnkaTapatipai vEladulunincEru
sanku madambula jAjara
As their ardent love making resulted in perfumed perspiration, the womenfolk daubed javvAji ( a perfume) on Venkateswara. According to VAK, the song was picturised beautifully in the film Annamayya.
