S Sowmya, BU Ganesh Prasad, Neyveli Narayanan
GNB Centenary Series concert (Brahma Gana Sabha & IFAS), Sivagami Pethachi Hall, Luz, Chennai
Mar 15th 2009

Concert was preceded by a very articulate 30-min talk in chaste Tamil on GNB by 'Cleveland' VV Sundaram

Ninnukori (Varnam) - Mohanam - Adi
Manasunilpa - Abhogi - Tyagaraja (s)
Marakoti Sundari - Bahudari - GN Balasubramaniam (r)
Saraswati Namostute - Saraswati - GN Balasubramaniam
Padamalarinai - Begada - GN Balasubramaniam (r)
Nenarunchinanu - Malavi - Tyagaraja
Nee Charanambujamunu - Keeravani - GN Balasubramaniam (r, n, s, t)
Jayati Jayati - Khamas
Vande Mataram Ambikam (Slokam) - Kanada, Saveri, Bhauli, Shuddhadhanyasi
Himagiri Tanaye - Shuddhadhanyasi - Muthiah Bhagavatar
Tillana - Hamsanandi - GN Balasubramaniam
Mangalam

A well-thought-out, well-executed tribute to the late master, bringing out his genius as a vaggeyakara. Some compositions popularized by him such as Himagiri Tanaye, Jayati Jayati & the slokam were also included for good measure, making it a complete homage. Highlights were certainly the Keeravani centrepiece and the Bahudari. Frequent power outages and a poorly balanced sound system were minor irritants. Overall a memorable experience with exposure to several unfamiliar but delightful songs...

That was a great concert.SS was at her best.In his Bahudari reply BUG played bit differently which IMO went slightly out of place.

SS's alapana of Bahudhari,Begada & Keeravani was full of style and aesthatics. Her swara singing for Keeravani in singing the same swaram in different octaves was a delight.I think she sang swarams for Bahudari & Begada also.I didn't take notes yesterday.

I was really happy to hear one of my favourite musicians after ~ 3 months.

The swarams in Keervani were an absolute delight. Neyveli Narayanan provided brilliant mridangam support.

Endaro member

I am correct in my version. You would have understood if you write the same raga bahudari in tamil and then transliterate into english. In strict dravidian tamil there is no script for the sound "h". they call "h" as "Vada Mozhi Chol" meaning taken from North (precisely Sanskrit). So when written in tamil it is written as "bagudari" only. Even the announcers in AIR announce it in such a way only. That is y i made a P(f)un of that word when our other member commented about it. And i think you were a bit rude in saying this "without proper knowledge please don't enter to this subject and relax" ... anyway i take it lightly.
And your spelling of pronunciation (pronounsation) was also wrong incidentally.

endaroo - I think it is you who needs to relax. We already have enough moderators who are doing a fine job. They do not require more help.

endaroo... please collect your thoughts and submit a single post instead of repeated single line posts. Taking a few deep breaths before hitting "Submit" may cure you of your posting diarrhea.
