Violin : Vittal Ramamurthy

Mri : K.V.Prasad

List of Songs

Kadavulai Maravadhe - Thandavam - DD- (R)
Endu Thahinado - Thodi - T ( R,N,S,T)
Narayananai - Komalangi - Ramanuja Dasar

The brief alapana of Thandavam was quite engaging so as the reply of VR. No swaras were sung hence couldn't identify the grammar of this rare raga.

Thodi alapana was for ~ 10 minutes which had Madurai Somu's style predominently. But MS had a robust voice with a good range and high energy. The kriti rendition was good as well as Tani by KVP.

Narayananai is a regular of SS now a days.

Overall a decent concert

I am a Sanjay fan and look forward to his concerts very eagerly. But I was absolutely appalled at the Thodi that he sang that day. The rest of the concert was pretty decent.

In a recording (titled Blissful harmony).. he was singing "Bhajare re.." (Kalyani) throughout as "Bajare re..."

I didn't feel so blissful.

srkris,

That way SS's Tamil is good unlike his contemporaries who kill even that.

Blame Dravidian govts.in T.N for lack of knowledge on sanskrit.

But an artist should earnestly try to pronounce perfectly in whatever language he/she sings.

It is sort of the opposite for me. I probably would not have let Bajare vs Bhajare affect the enjoyment of the song because I do not know any better. But in Tamil songs, where tamilized sanskrit words are used like 'pasu', 'Asai', some singers pronounce it in the original sanskrit form 'paSu', 'ASai' etc. That makes me focus on that 'special usage' and lose focus on what they are singing for a couple of avarthanas. It will be good if they follow the 'tatsamam', 'tadbhavam' distinction in imported/adopted words, that will flow much better in the imported language.

Not taking away from your main point, but if I am not mistaken, Asai is a tamil word and your interpretation could be a result of the reverse i.e. "sanskritization of tamil words" (although it is more like an accent albeit from a cross-section of the community with history of sanskrit influence). I believe this is done more by cm artists than tamilization of sanskrit words ;) ;) - so much so that many of us think it really is ASai, aSai; native words that use it are really sanskrit words, and that almost all "sa" is really "Sa" :)

Arun, not sure 100% but tamil Asai roughly corresponds in meaning to the Hindi Asha which probably has a Sanskrit root....

Then I stand corrected w.r.t that word. Actually, I was not 100% sure about that one (hence the prefix if I am not mistaken :) since I thought maybe kannada has it but uses "Sa" (?). But anyway my main point was that the overwhelming % of cm community pretty much use "Sa" even for almost all native tamil words where "sa" is in use outside of the cm world.

To add to this Sa-sa distinction, you can add the Sha version too! This may be more prevalent amongst those who have lived north of the Vindhyas for some time.

May be this deserves another thread, may be in another forum: " Sanskrit has borrowed quite as much from Dravidian as Dravidian has from Sanskrit."

http://www.tamilnation.org/literature/sanskrit.htm

It's quite possible that Asai the Tamil word migrated north and changed its meaning too as happens with many such borrowed words... (Asai, Tamil - desire/want, Asha, Hindi - Hope)

Thandavam is newly experiment. Narayani is very near raga of Kedaragoula. Sanjay should be careful with this in future.

Asai, isai, Osai, silai... a big list is there.... often, pronunced wrongly as ASai, iSai, OSai, Silai... like that. Also, I am unable to understand why eNNam, kiNNam, vaNNam like words are always kizhNam, vazhNam, especially in cine music and one more thing is while singing kuRil(hrasva), some give a sustain and do sanchAram, many a times in viruththam...
