vidhwAns may be pazham peRum (perum too) artistes, but, "rasikas" only reap the fruits of their performances :)

(In thamizh, peRum means getting and perum means great and huge. This two types of Ra and ra are called periya Ra (big Ra) and
siRiya ra (small ra). The intersting episode is, to denote periya [big], the small ra is used and to denote siriya [small], big Ra is used!).

thagarARu is a word meaning a quarrel or a amall fight or problem. If anyone asks a doubt in this word about, how to write, ra or Ra, we say, if the fight is small use the smaller one and if it is terrible and severe, use the bigger one :P

There was one vidwan who went to a famous town for concert where once he has witnessed Rifle Shooting competition.

When he went after some 5 or 6 years to the same place he asked the Host :

"Thuppakki Sudara potti nadakkume .... inda samayathula .... is it there ?"

"Sir ada yaen kekkareenga ... inda town la irunda thuppakki ellam oruthan suttundu poyittan... so we hv cancelled all the events...

We organized a concert in dhArApuram for rAgavendhra ArAdhanA[1994 or 95]. The then trustee read the names of artistes written in the proof of invitation.

Ramani -Flute
Chandhrasekaran - violin
Karaikudi Mani - Mrudangam
Harishankar - Kanjira

My friend Gopalakrishnan: "idhu ellAm artistes names"¦ sElathula irundhu Ramachar vandhuduvAr, thampurA pOda"¦ avarukku oru Rs. 100 kuduththudalAm"¦" (These are the names of artistes, ramachar will come for doing the thampura, from salem.. we can pay him Rs.100 for it)

Trustee: yEmpA"¦ already ivLO Per irukkALE, indha thampura vEra vENumA? (See, already you have lot of artistes, what is the need of this ramachar?)

During mrudangam arangetram of one of my friends.. (nAgrAj sir knows about this :) ).. A prominent personality was the chief guest for the programme..

After the thani , the chief guest was invited to talk and the speech was like " inniki andha kozhandha vAschathla visEsham enna nAka avan rendu kaiyAlayum vAsichAn."

(Today the best thing about his playing was that he played using both his hands)

once a zamindar arranged a kutcheri by a great artist, with violin, mridangam, ghatam, kanjira and a konnakkol as pakka vadhyams for his daughter's marriage. While making payments to the artists he refused to pay anything to the konnakol artist .When asked, he retorted ' why should I pay him,he did not play any instrument,he was only making strange noises .. gobilalitha
INCIDENTALLY,I cannot forget the fast , excellent, rare konnakkol byan artist (sorry I forgot his name)at the performance of Ashwin,Rohin during december ,graciously arranged by kaumaram at his residence, attended by many forumites. gobilalitha

Saw this on another discussion forum:

Years back, a senior Vidwan was giving a performance in Veeravanallur (adjacent
to Harikesanallur). When the "Tukkada" session started, somebody in audience
shouted "oru english nottu venum!" (one English Note please")
Musician replied "enkittey oru rupa nottukkooda Illaye; english nottukku engeppa
poven?" (I don't have even a rupee note; where will I go for English note?")

One day in our Class our Guru had given some combinations to be worked out and we were all working on that by breaking our heads. Suddenly one sishya of our Guru came and asked Can you tell tisram, chatusram, khandam, and misram all in Arai Avartanam. All our thoughts suddenly turned to this idea and started working on that forgetting our guru's combinations for sometime.

Later we had to admit to the sishya that we couldnt get them within arai avartanam since the total is 19 and asked him to render if he knew.

What we saw next was one hell of a laughter for all of us....

He was putting Adi talam from samam and then when the arai avartanam started he said

Thisram for the beat
Chatursram for the wave
Khandam for the beat
and Misram for the wave not the sollus just the Tisram, chatursram, Khandam, Misram Tha.....

All of us burst into laughter.

Once, there was a retired mAmA, who spent his time with regular poojA and gardening. His neighbour gOpAlakrishNan had a cow which troubled him by eating the plants. The mAmA got very much annoyed by this and complained his neighbor who turned a deaf ear. Since, beating the cow is one of the great sins, mAmA became helpless and sad. (You can beat the ‘bush’ but not the jersey!)
Everyday, after poojA, he used to sing,
swasthi prajAbhya: paripAlayanthAm
nyAyayEna mArgEna mahIm mahISA:
gObhrAmaNEbhya: Subhamasthu nithyam
lOkA samasthA: SukhinO bhavanthu...

but today, after singing the third line, suddenly it appeared to his mind that if he prays for all the cows, then this gOpAlakrishNan’s cow will also be hale and healthy to invade his garden! So, he sang the slOkam like this...

swasthi prajAbhya: paripAlayanthAm
nyAyayEna mArgEna mahIm mahISA:
gObhrAmaNEbhya: Subhamasthu nithyam
gOpAlakrishNan pasu neengalAga! (except gOpAlakrishNan’s cow )

:) as told by Dr.Srivatsa, in one of his speeches in guruguhanjali series

The mridangist was coaxing and pampering his instrument in different ways for quite a while. The artiste finally lost his patience and asked " enna problem?".
The mridangist responded "shruti sariyaa vara maatengaRathu.." (shruti is not coming properly). Suddenly a little girl (named shruti)rushed to the dais and said: " paravaa illayinna maamaa naan vENumnaa vaREn.." (if it is OK I will come) :)

Moral:
A mridangist may always have a little girl named shruti to accompany him. Then he can always claim "enakku eppovumE shruti kooDa iruppa" ( I am always with shruti) :) (In case the Hindu reviewer ever claimed that he was without shruti in his performances he could always sue them :)

CML,
Your imaginary 'naDai' of the 'Two mirthful mrudangists of Chennai' was very amusing. Nagarajan was inspired and continued in the same naDai. 'eDuppAga' irundadu, used to be an expression in our days (meaning something distinguished, a stand-out). While I enjoy the two gentlemen from layA delivering richly to this thread, I do feel sorry for those who cannot follow tamizh or the puns and references here which are difficult to translate. Nick is better off though, because he knows more of the layA terms than I do...

I know and they can play a tani aavartanam on the back! I remember the days travelling in trains when singers would bare their stomachs and play beautiful rhythm on them just for pennies. Do they exist any more?

By the by who is the mridangist who is always addressed respectfully even when you get angry/upset with him? :)

After laya lAvaNyA function on 27th, we were packing things.

Ammangudi S. Ram Narayanan, Calcutta Karthik and Shri K.V.Ramanujam were there...

me: karthik, ram narayanan has no ego when he plays the mrudangam, but he is an egoistic rider on the bike...

ram, karthik & kvr: ???
