Dear Members

I am trying to answer an exam question on Music Notation. I have covered the following topics within my answer:

Aksharakaala
Gamakam
Avanthanam
Staayis
Thalam

My information of kaalam is practically non-existent. Can anyone help with this section? Also is there anything else I need to cover for this Grade 3 question?

Many thanks in advance for your help

Aarti

Kaalam means time in Sanksrit/Tamil...as the name indicates it refers to tempo especially in creative sections - melkaalam means fast tempo (typically 4 notes per beat) ans keezhkaalam is typically 2 notes per beat...a more pleasant way of learning this would be to actually hear neravals/swaras - you can usually tell when there is a transition from keezhkaalam to melkaalam...

You are lucky to be studying music! All the best for your exams
