At a boy seeing girl for marriage function(pen parkum padalam), in those days when playing cassettes in houses was popular, the girl's(would be bride)father kept the song 'RA RA MA INTI played on the nagaswaram in the iape recorder, to be switched on as soon as the partystepped in to his house. Meanwhile a mischievous boy took out the cassette and placed on the reverse side without anybody's notice. As soon as the boy's party entered the house THE TAPE RECORDER WAS SWITCHED ON . The song was Antakana doodariki kinchithu dayavilla,by MLV. All of them were stunned and the girl's father feared that the proceedings would abruptly end because of ketta sakunam(bad omen). Then the boy came to the rescue of the girl's father saying 'do not bother, the marriage will go on,I am an ardent admirer of MLV. , will walk miles to hear her and let out the secret, that they have already met and discussed about the marriage. gobilalitha

My sishya Krishna Prasad attended a concert of TNS-MC at MFAC, some years ago. The mama who sat next to him kept on pestering with various questions. At one point, when a beautiful alapana was going on, the mama asked, "enna ragam alapanai paNRAr?"
To escape from him once for all, Krishna said, "oh... idhu dhAn rAgamA" and that mama never turned to his side there after!

In general, I am totally against criticism based on caste and colour. But, this was a coincidence when a particular sms was in the "forward" lanes of mobile users!
what is the difference between rajnikanth and vijayakanth?
rajni is terribly black and vijayakanth is black and terrible.
This sms reached me in the afternoon and I played a wedding concert n the evening at triplicane. That was a marriage of some assistant director.
After my thani Avarthanam was over, the singer asked me, what to sing as a lighter piece. I suggested "kAkkai chiRaginilE".
She started singing and the guy entered the hall was none but, actor-politician Vijayakanth, that too when she was singing, "undhan karumai niRam thOnRudhadA"
I scared her (she is my best friend) for sometime saying, "he noticed what you sang and also his men looked at you!"
He came to the dias, keeping his shoulders and hands very rigid, just like sivaji ganesan takes any karpoora haarathi!
After reaching back home he wouldn't have bothered to imitate his "friend" comedian vadivelu and would have said, "nAnum evLO nEram thAn dhondhi illAdha mAdhiriyE dham katti nikkaradhu"

The commas comedy happened in yesterday's concert at Raga Sudha. Bharath Sundar sang kamAs and after the alapana in violin, he felt like singing some phrases and did a sketch. Then he sang brOchEvArevarurA.
Someone asked why it happened like that. I said, "I thought he is going to sing a pallavi, then realised, he just tried to prevent full stop and did justice to the name ,,,,,,,,

Wedding concerts of MS (especially in the later part of her career) were in most cases an occasion for helping a person or group of persons in need of some assistance. On most occasions the beneficiary would be asked by Sri Sadasivam to come to the concert and after the program, MS's concert amount would be directly handed over to the concerned person. It was on one such occasion after the beneficiary had left, it was discovered that the accompanying artists remuneration was also in the same cover !!
Prompting Sri V Nagarajan (Kanjira Vidwan) to say to Sri Sadasivam, " Mama , we do not do charity (dharmam) to the level which you do. So let it remain that this time we the accompanists have also participated in your noble act "
Needless to add after a round of energetic laughter from all present the accompanists too received their remuneration from the organisers!

Cienu, Arasi madam and Gobilalitha sir the same kind of greatness can be seen with Dr.V.V.Srivatsa. Have you ever heard paying money for the concert which you didnt play ? I was forced to receive hefty sum from him for a concert which i didnt play. I just accepted the date and due to some unavoidable circumstances the concert was cancelled which sometimes happens. To my big surprise he sent his driver to my house (which is about 10 kms from his house---> 10kms in Chennai is a pretty long distance) with a cover for the concert that got cancelled. His logic was : "If i hadnot booked you for that date at least you would have accepted another concert. so you have to accept the payment".
I was dumbstuck. Such great musicians are still around. When our Durai balasubramaniam, Violinist died in a road accident all the musicians paid huge sums for the bereaved family.
Even now we know an instance of money being raised for Shyama Shastri's descendants.
The list is endless...

Yes, of course. Contractual guarantees are a standard feature in many concerts, and should be in CM. It is a reasonable, logical requirement.mridhangam wrote:Have you ever heard paying money for the concert which you didnt play ?
Why don't CM musicians get together and establish some minimum pay scales and expected operating conditions? Reading this forum, it feels like they simply rely on goodwill on the part of organizers, other musicians, and the public - unfortunately, there are many examples where that goodwill simply isn't there.

gn.sn42, I agree that if such covenants are written and signed by both parties, then the episode Mridhangam narraetes would not be much to write about. I guess the main point of this episode is the unexpected pleasant surprise.
Also, those covenants are a double-edged sword. If one is really desparate, they can agree to terms like if the concert is canceled before 48 hours there will not be any compensatory pay, within 24 hours 10%, on the day of concert 20% plus a travel allowance etc. And they can put exclusions of many kinds like act of god etc. for which they are not on the hook to pay anything.
In the absence of such things in the CM culture, the magnanimity of the host needs to be appreciated.
But your over all point is well taken: the artists need not rely on the individual host's good-nature for some basic things. I am also surprised to read about such uncertainy on how much the artists are going to get paid, it looks like they find that out only when they open the envelope.

vasanthakokilam, I understand your point, and agree that goodwill where expressed should be appreciated. I'll tone down my initial response a bit.
However, I would continue to urge a more professional approach to concert organization, beginning with minimum pay and proper contracts. There can certainly be limitations and fine print with contracts, and we might need to supplement that with insurance.
Goodwill is always a welcome thing regardless of the contract specifics.

We can make very watertight contracts with all terms and conditions clearly laid out, but in real life variables and situations arise, which are beyond the imagination of the contract drafters. The contracts are only to ensure the spirit of what is agreed and understood to be agreed.
Goodwill and willingness to accomodate by both parties only assures a happy and enjoyable concert.
Here is an interesting story (based on hearsay so its authenticity is not known).
A top musician was invited by an organiser for a series of concerts in the US. The contract was signed and resposibilities of both the host and the performer were clearly set forth. On the D-day when the curtains were raised and the concert was to begin, the musician found that his concert was being audio and video recorded, which he felt was not part of the contract.
So he called the organisers and told them that as recording was not part of the contract, an extra amount should be paid for it. The organisers were not convinced and put the contract under a microscope and showed him a fine print which interpreted that recording was included.
This kind of breach of faith was neither expected by the concert team.
As he was bound by the contract, the musician allowed the recording, but did not want to disappoint the audience and the concert was a great success and well appreciated.
From the next concert onwards, the musician decided to get his own back. From the next concert, he chose to sing ditto whatever he had sung in the first concert.
The bewidered organisers asked for an explanation. The musician's response was that the contract did not have a clause binding him what he should sing. So he chose to sing what he wanted. As there was no breach of contract, he cannot be questioned.
So now I leave it to the members to debate whether it is the spirit or letter of agreement which are important. Also whether it can be ensured only by one party.
I do not know if the anecdote is a fact or fiction, but it is a good subject for case study

Dear respected members,
Hill-airy places are meant for tea(estates). "Copy"right or coughy-write issues about, artistes-organiser-rasika wounds can be discussed in seperate threads. Think of visitors and new users, seeing the title hilarity and reading serious things like, breach of faith.
Back to topic,
(UKS Sir told this long time ago)
This was a story about a zamindar who had very less knowledge about CM, but used to arrange concerts and support musicians.
Once, he had organised a concert of an artiste from a far away city. The local vidhwan was annoyed in hearing this, like raj thakre and went to the zamindar. Somehow the local vidhwan managed to get the news that the singer from outside doesn't know pacharathna krithis. He said to zamindar that the artiste is very famous for singing pancharathnam and honourable zamin should never miss a chance to hear pancharathnam from that musician!
The day arrived., the artiste too. Zamindar requested him to sing pancharathna and made it a beloved order that he should sing that. Generally, any singer would have been got a shock on hearing this and would have run away from there. But, this man was smarter enough to realise the capacity and jnAna of the zamin. He was in a situatuion that neither he can admit the fact nor he can sing pancharathnam without knowing them and get a sApam from the divine composer. The local vidhwan, fearing that the zamindar may disclose that he only told about all these, absented himself for the concert. So, the new singer sang in bilahari, "pancharathna keerthanamu... pAdamu lEdhu... in the tune of smarasdhA mAnasa"

I read this somewhere a long time back:
"There was a Zamorin at Calicut who was fond of music and had also a good knowledge of the art. He used to patronise deserving musicians and give them rich presents. Once a great pallavi vidwan happened to go to Calicut; the Private Secretary to the Zamorin, himself a rasika, arranged for a concert by the vidwan at the palace. The Zamorin had one weakness - he would ask the artist to give beforehand, the wording of the song he proposed to sing. When the vidwan had elaborated a raga and was about to begin the pallavi, the Zamorin made his usual demand. The vidwan got wild and shouted ‘Which fool would care about the sahitya of a pallavi?’ and went away from the palace. The Zamorin also got angry. The Private Secretary was a tactful man; he pacified the two and arranged for a recital the next day: he had managed to get the Zamorin to waive his stipulation regarding the wording of the pallavi. The vidwan started the pallavi and elaborated it with such mastery and skill and charm that the Zamorin was highly pleased and made extra presents to the vidwan. When, the artist was about to leave the palace, the Zamorin asked him to give the wording of the pallavi at least then. The vidwan faced the Zamorin and said, ‘I am prepared to give you the sahitya on the condition that you will not get angry.’ The Zamorin agreed to the condition, and the vidwan gave him the sahitya, and immediately ran away. The Zamorin was taken aback, and got into a rage, but he could not do anything as the vidwan had in the meantime run away. The sahitya was "samūdiri thavidu thinnū" meaning "the Zamorin ate the chaff", the implication being that instead of enjoying the pure art of music, the Zamorin was after the words which especially in a pallavi was as insignificant as the chaff as compared to the grain."

srkris,
Good story, but though I am not claiming sAhityam is the staff of musical expression--to call it chaff!
The zamorin (haven't heard that word before; another way of saying zamindar?) While he was being that particular, the vidvAn was simply petty!

Nick,
If all rasikAs had good ears and were all ears too, even then, but for a few vocalists, we would have trouble getting every single word that they sing. Sahitya Section , besides dealing with myriad meanings of the same word, has also another problem: not getting all the words of a song even if listened to over and over again. Lakshman and others experience this...

these dialogues by shri. chembai is there at the beggining of a recorded concert.
It has his disciple Shri KJ yesudas too on the stage assisiting him.
and chembai starts:-

avasanam naalu cinema paatukal dasane kondu paadikkaam"
"All of you please listen and enjoy the kutcheri with patience. Please do not request to sing film songs in the middle. At the end we will make dasan(yesudas) to sing a few of them"

Me and my friend visited a place near thAmbaram for a concert in a private function. As we were invited for lunch itself, we had it, took rest and started getting ready in the evening!
My friend went to freshen up and returned with a "bright face". "Nagaraj, no problem, I looked for a soap and found a tooth paste only... so used it to wash my face"
"aahaa.... purpose-a maatheettayE" (changed)
"?????"
"par-pasaiyOda, purpose-aiyE maatheettayE!"
(par pasai - tooth paste)
