tAyE yashOdA - tODi - Adi - OVK (RNS)
tani
khamAs
nIlAmbari, sahAnA, dEvagAndhAri, sAvEri, suruTTi, sindubhairavi
venkaTAcala nilayam - sindhubhairavi

It was a great concert. I entered while he was playing Anandabhairavi. It was a treat to hear such an elegant Anandabhairavi as i entered. The mukhAri was very moving. The sALagabhairavi was very nice and gave nice insights into the rAga svarUpam. The main tODi was very elaborate and rendered very well. This was followed by a nice khamAs (the kriti, i couldnt identify) and the rAgamAlikA AlApanai was very nice as well. I left during the sindubhairavi piece. The accompanists were very good and played in perfect match for the main artist. On the whole a very good concert.

The evening began with an unfortunate drama: one small kitten, who I have seen previously next door, decided to join the audience, entering at someone's feet. They did not notice it, and let the door close behind them normally. The poor kitten became trapped by its neck. I ran to release it, and it seemed shocked but certainly still alive. I hope it is well! I cringe to think of the poor tiny thing stuck there. Thank goodness the door closers do not have an even more powerful spring.

Having got over that as much as I could, both my wife and I settled in for an excellent concert. I think there must have been something for everyone in the evening, and that even a newcomer to CM would have enjoyed the drama in the music.

I just love to have the opportunity to see TNK play alone, and this was such an opportunity.

Wonderful evening! More stardust :)

The thaye yashoda in thodi ragam must have been very moving. I once heard TNK play this kriti as part of a radio sangeet sammelan in the early 70's and in the neraval portion of this kriti he introduced "samam". He was accompanied by Sivaraman on the mridangam and Vinayakaram on the Ghatam.

I'm a bit confused--why was there a ragamaliga alapanai before venkaTAchala nilayam?

Bilahari,

That is very common with TNK. Sometimes he will elaborate on various ragas before settling down to a kriti. This is his way of giving the audience their fill. I have seen this only when he plays by himself.

Nick,

I saw a small kitten (brown and white) in raga sudha today. It seemed all right. :) It's so cute!

Appu, thanks for the clarification. I have only heard his elaborate ragamaliga thanams, which are always superb.

Srikant, I think there must be a family; the one that nearly proved the English saying true (Curiosity killed the cat) was black and white --- also cute, and still cute I hope :)
