MS SheelA@PS High School on Apr 18th,2009
-----------------------------------------
Accompanied by usha ganapathi???-violin , mridangam -ganapAthi rAman and kanjirA- sethurAman

1. calamEla jEsEvurA - darbAr - ThiruvOttiyur ThyagayyA
2. raghunAyakA (S)- hamsadhwani -T
3. sogasugA mrudanga(S) - shreeranjani - T
swaras for 5 minutes

4.Marivere dikkevaro(R N S) - latAngi - PSI
rAga alApanai for 8 mins , neraval for 6 mins and 7 mins swaram
neraval in the line "dharalOna nI sATi deivamu "
5. singAra velan vandAn - Ananda bhairavi - psivan
6. sArasamukhi sakala - gowDamalhAr - HMB

7.pAdamE tuNai paramashivA - valaji - psivan
8A.kaligiyuNTEgadA (R N S T)- keeravAni - T
8B. tani

9. mAdhava mAmava - neelAmbari - NT
10.nanda thanaya govinda - yamunA kalyAni - PD
11.pavamAna (mangalam)

Pluses in the concert
---------------------

1. The main keeravAni alApanai was very good to excellent . I could spot a lot of MLV'ian charge in her music.

2. Her diction be it thamizh, telugu ,kannadA or sanskrit is just perfect . Despite she referring 2 thamizh krithis (especially singAra velan) and another tukkadA krithi, she has command over the language .To that extent each of us can feel that this artist is from their land .

3. Nice sequencing of kriths with respect to different kAlapramaNam , and with me being more a swara centered rasika, she has definitely the swara reach to my satisfaction.

4. gaNapathirAman's mridangam added lot of weight to her voice and was very expressive

Plus or Minus(kind of 50-50) in the concert
----------------------------

1. Despite handling lathAngi beautifully in the krithi, neraval and swaras her maNodharmam in the alApana had quite a lot of shades of kalyAni. LathAngi is to me a cross between paNtuvarAli and kalyAni, but to me it took a long time in the alApana to identify lathAngi.

2. I have not heard any purandaradAsar or a kannada (language)composition as a main. Though
attended few exclusive purandara dasar concerts few years back, I am yet to experience a
vistarAmana (grand)main composition from any performer yet. Though this crib is bit unfair with the vidushi, with me circling for about 4 concerts, I am yet to taste a purandaradAsar or a kannada language main.

3. At times the vidushi , lost a lot of breadth and after that she just had to give a hard try and during that time she went off key with shruthi. This happened to atleast 4 or 5 songs.

Minuses in the concert
----------------------
1. The concert start is at 06:15 pm.She had a whole night for her , would have been nice if she had included a RTP in the concert .I just went with an expectation of RTP as usually if the concert starts at 7 pm it will be a no RTP concert . Also even if my expectation of RTP is little high, I dont like musicians not singing a viruththam/slOkham etc.

2. This concert had a so so kanjirA support , but the biggest minus and let down was less than mediocre violin accompaniment . She had a very mediocre nAdham and her returns were not pushing the vocalist . For her lathAngi swaras and abHogi the violinist could have been much more responsive and fast.

Overall a good to very good concert by the team , but certainly this vidushi was half point more if she had a more responsive violinist.

Rajesh,
I have heard 'nambi keTTavarilavO?' (kalyANi) and other ghana ragam songs treated in a 'vistAramAna' vidam. I think it is because people outside Karnataka are not used to it--also because they are sung as tukkaDAs in most concerts. T's songs are not sung in their entirety. The same with Purandara dAsA's songs which also have multiple SaraNams--though I have also heard Sheela and others sing several verses in a song at times.
Is it because even tamizh songs in TN are not considered by some as 'mains' because sanskrit and telugu have been been the tradition all along?

Wow, items 4-7 are all pretty rare for me. I share your feelings about Lathangi being a cross between P'varali and Kalyani. I have been intending to catch MS Sheela live ever since I heard her on Worldspace in India.

Arasi,
The only kannada song that I have heard as a sub main is nambi keTTavarilavO in kalyANi. I am yet to hear a main in kannada language

I heard "Odi barayya" in bhairavi as the main piece. Its a beautiful composition. There is one more "Kannara kanden achyuthana" in Thodi, I heard Miss Bhavadhaarini's version. The song was very grand.

Feel like starting a new thread on this alone. I could keep you engaged for a whole year :)

Any other takers for a series on "Kannada krithis as represented in CM Concert recordings"
I have been working on this project for my personal use for more than a decade. So you can expect lots of surprises ..... spanning a reach beyond Nambi Kettavarillavo, Manava Janma Doddadu ....

take a look here.
Kulkarni sir!
Count me in (eventhough I heard beku instead of bEku in the MLV clip)!

Please start the separate thread!

our childhood whim of anglifying verses fully at work--I 'slow' vu 'slow' vA 'cat-like' noise' 'do'vAmalE 'run' nuvEn!

Kulkarni Sir!
Small problem. Becasue the file size is bigger than 10MB, we cannot download the file. The provider suggests that you should upgrade your account to be able to upload bigger files.

Also, please look into starting a new thread, so that we would not be hijacking the thread reviewing M S Sheela's concert.

Thanks!

Kannada composition for main - I recall a fairly detailed Ninne Doddavano - Thodi sung as main by TNS a few years back.
