Hello everyone (and especially Mr. V. K. Viswanathan who was a great resource for me):

I just wanted to announce that a story of mine on Carnatic music received a Northern California award (in the Arts, Sports and Entertainment category) from the New America Media organization. The article has now been sent up for consideration for a national award by New America Media (to be announced in June 09). The New America Media is a consortium of different ethnic media outlets in the United States.

Information about the award is at http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/vi ... 59d8ea172a

I wanted to thank many of the artistes who contributed to the story and, of course, Mr. V. K. Viswanathan who was of immense help in tracing the evolution of Carnatic music in the US.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to read it when Mr. VKV posted it last year, please read the piece at http://www.indiacurrents.com/news/view_ ... a3fd3c4a97

Thank you and may the Carnatic music flag fly high year after year!

Kalpana Mohan, Saratoga, CA (who just returned from a weekend at the Cleveland Aradhana!)

Just took a brief look at the article, and look forward to reading it properly tomorrow, rather than rushing through before sleep. It looks well worth saving.

Congratulations on your success :)

Oh! I'm so glad this thread re-surfaced; I'd forgotten.

An excellent article; on really feels for the work of the pioneers --- and those that continue today. You have written a great tribute to the Karnatic community in USA!

Dear Kalpana Mohan,

Thanks for your extra-ordinary kindness in referring & thanking me for the very well deserved award you received. I hope you win the whole thing as I feel you are a very effective communicator of complex & to some here strange things. I particularly admired the patience & thoroughness with which you did the colecting of data. Of course your brilliant style of writing clinched the issue! Regs, VKV
