Having only heard about the musician's non music more, this is my first concert hearing this musician's music.Certainly it was worth it as he sang beautifully with just very few negatives.

KJ yesudAs as a musician (I like his films than his CM) has perhaps inspired a whole generation of musicians to take up his voice . To name a few Jeyachandran,Unni menon, mg srikumAr in films and perhaps in CM scene there is this namubuthri who has the maximum overlap of KJY(I dont know if they get it in their gene by eating lot of nendrankA (banana)chips ;) (our smiley looks like one of the chips) or has KJY really influenced them, though I tend towards the later ). The good news is that his voice only matches most of the time , certainly the classicism of namubuthri is high much higher than our present day KJY.

The start in nAttai was quite good and I heard just from the anupallavi line onwards as i was few minutes late. The vidajAladhura had a lot of speed and it suited the krithi a lot. AbhOgi alApanai was quite short but certainly it had the right carnatic dose the swaras were very well rendered .The popular commas krithi was dwelled quite well it had a few semi colon stoppages at times,as I prefer comma flow.

The kedaragowlai was the submain ,he had lost a little breadth of breadth in the swaras and there was a slight slur in swaras but certainly well rendered. All the 3 fillers were very good with sivan's valachi standing out. Though there was no big six ,one of the most qualified 12th man of big six madhyamAvati came out as main and it was beautifully rendered .The swaras ,krithi and alApanai did stand out more than neraval as it was curtailed.

After a little longish tani, all the tukkadas stood out well for classicism ,the spread was beautiful covering all the languages of CM, I particularly liked the fast behAg(nice one then the usual drowsy behAg).

The concert had a top class percussion support both percussionist had a great chemistry with the musician the kerala nivasA was top notch , however pandyA nAdu violinist was just little shaky at times but still managed it very well.

Few weekness with MK sankaran nambUthri
---------------------------------------

1. The neraval was not focussed well and it was just for 4 minutes ,I think he lost a lot of breadth there and went to swaras directly, if he had cut one of the above 3 fillers it would have been perfect. Certainly this musician appears a neraval capable musician unlike many of today's musician who just dont make it. THis neraval deficiency was more incidental

2. Mike etiquette: few musicians go round the mike ,this musician does always sing straight to the mike , but there are at times few stochastic shocks happened where he pops up front with his mouth hitting the head of the mike or very very close at times , it appeared he was popping out and singing , I am assuming this is a long term weekness .During those mike aggression , the voice volume was quite high, thank god it was a big sabha , if it had been a hall like sastri hall it would have been irritating.

3. Two concerts one last week sheela at the mandaveli side of mylapore , yesterday at the alwarpet side of mylapore, despite the start of 6:30 pm concert there was no RTP. I hope musicians grab oppurtunity to sing a rtp, where else can I go other than mylapore .

4. For almost all the krithis he was referring the notes, I am bit surprised he was referring even the popular abhOgi ,this referral did take a hit in quality, though it was very slight.

Overall a very good concert. Certainly this musician is in my radar for sure, there is classicism, diction clarity and a charge in his music.Hope my 2nd concert of his has a rtp.

Nice review as always, Rajesh. Surprising you have not heard MKSN till now - thought he was popular as a child artiste more than 2 decades ago.

Can't resist this one though :) , just came here from the treadmill / workout thread in the General Discussion category: so all anyone needs to do to lose 'breadth' is to perform on stage and ensure that Rajesh attends/ reviews? Impressive results for a 2-1/2 hour workout :p

A review full of rajesh-isms: his preference for commas flow to cemicolon stoppages! And a nEndrankA chip like a smiley! pANDya kEraLa vidvAns on stage...

I do not get to listen to SN during the season because he does not perform that much. Anyway, I had 'heard' about him a lot. When we got to listen to him once about a dozen years ago (?), my reaction was very similar to yours. He was not as good as they made him out to be, but he still appealed to me. Afterwards, when I listened to an earlier recording of his, I was greatly impressed.
As for the restless mike-manners, I do remember that at that concert, he was making me nervous by moving further amd further towards the rim of the stage.
Hope I get to hear him next season--and hear an RTP too from him. Would be nice to see you react to every sangati and jotting things and minutes down in your handbook :) Here, another nEndarnkA chip for you if you are renewing the membership at the gym!
