I wish to bring to your attention a brilliant recital by Violin Maestro M.Chandrasekharan(Vocal)-SINGING WITH HIS VOICE!- accompanied ably by Madhirimangalam Swaminathan(Mridhangam) and with Abhinayam by his dauighter Bharathi (a great dancer in addition to being a good violinist) :
"Surrender unto Thee"- Padams&Javalis in the classical tradition of Smt.Jayamma. I am sure many would have read in another posting of the Doyen Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer stating that he went to many dance recitals JUST to hear Jayamma sing Padams& Javalis. I have heard similar sentiments expressed by S.Rajam & have been fortunate to hear Balsaraswathy, T.Viswanathan & Brinda render these. I am of the opinion that the best concert- apart from M.S.S' UN Concert- I have heard since I came to USA in 1959 is that of Brinda accompanied by Viswa on the flute- without Mridangam or any percussion accompaniments- at Bharathi Society in NYC(1963) rendering mostly Padams& Javalis.
M.Chandrasekharan in addition to his 60 year concert career full of so many brilliant moments in my opinion has reached the pinnacle with this performance. He was a student of Jayamma. The Aradhana Commitee esp. Cleveland Sundaram should be congragulated on showcasing the BEST in our music in presernting this concert. VKV

VKV Sir,
Do you have the recording of T. Brinda and T. Viswa's concert at NY ? I have heard some rave reviews from other music fans too.
Cleveland Aradhana must be congratulated for bringing quality artists - supporting Nadaswarm artists, many manygreat Vidwans to USA - T. Muktha, Kalpagam Swaminathan, Parasala Ponnammal, Manakkal Rangarajan, RK Srikantan, B. Rajam Iyer, ....
Now, Cleveland Aradhana is THE only game in town - USA - for supporting top quality musicians.
Unfortunately, most other sabhas are purely interested in $$ and cents and gate collection and do not support good music

Sri Annamalai,
It is not appropriate to compare Cleveland Aradhana with other organizers in US. As an organizer in my town, I can say that it is a very difficult job to financially manage. In another thread, the reasons have been explained and I will not go into that. There is probably one approach which could help in resolving the issue. All Local organizations should come together and manage the entire process of bringing artists from India for concerts (Once in spring and once during fall). If the middlemen are cut off and arbitrary hiking of rates are curbed, then we might find a solution to this. But who will take this initiative?
