One of the best things about the forum is you get to read more and more reviews ,that way there are more and more dots for you to experience more and more vidwans/vidushis. My first experience to hear this vidushi was perhaps triggered by few reviewers(one reviewer who especially recommended ) .

I was late and just joined somewhere half way with mAkelarA where she completed with a brief round of swaras . Huseni just requires a very lilting feel , she did not get that perfectly there. There was a rare Arabi krithi ,this krithi was sung just good , there was two rounds of cittaswaras and from there when she went for swaras , it did not appear perfect she appeared to lose her voice strength quite a bit.

The day's best was her paNtuvarAli , her voice settled very well and she had a very continous pitch , the symmetry of swaras was always there and was nice , her neraval in the usual "manasu na" line was quite short , infact it turned to be a fairly disappointing concert in terms of neraval as she did not exhibit much maNodharmam there.

The main was somewhat a rare krithi , usually shankarAbharanam should be sung in atleast 2 speeds one in the usual sbharanam drowsy middle road madhyama kAlam , I think one needs to also manoeveur towards the higher speed too ,she preferred to completely almost skip the entire higher speed rendition. THis krithi is usually not sung with neraval (I have heard few musicians singing ,all of them dont sing neraval ), her swaras was just ok to good.

It was around 08:20 pm at the end of the main, I donot understand as to why the tani was stretched for full 17 minutes for a 2 hour concert. I am assuming it is either the case of vocalist requesting the tani to be longer , or it was just that the mridangist (who resembled Bhakthavatsalam) who played it too long with the kanjirA artist (betweeen the two I tend to drift towards the first one till some one proves otherwise), the first round of tani of mridangist alone stretched to full 5 minutes.

Well I have no qualms if the tani is little longer as long as the vidushi/vidwan has a long and well presented tukkada. In all concerts viruththam / slOkham is a must , but Smt sankari felt the other way she launched to some standard sindhubhairavi after signalling the organizers , I knew her countdown to 08:45 pm just got started and it was perfect with her thillANa and when it was pavamAna at 08:45 , pAvamA naN ;) I had to leave the concert.

Of late which ever artist I choose kumbakOnam m r gOpinAth is the violinist ,incidentally he was caught with law of average in his main area shruthi and nAdham which usually is far better than this concert .Also KVG in kanjirA never gelled that well in the concert , saravanan in mridangam played very good during the concert the strokes were strokeful

Overall a mediocre to good concert , certainly I was bit unlucky to have this first impression.

Rajesh, I have a concert of hers featuring RTP in shankarAbharaNam, and I too felt the same way about the neravals (and the same first impression as you). She has a very soft (mellisAna) voice.

It is supposed to be rendered in dEsika tODi and is by our own tyAgarAjasvAmi. Dr S Ramanathan & Brahmasri T S Balakrishna Sastrigal used to say it was his first kriti at the age of 7 or 9 when his father, SrI rAma brahmam understood he had some inclination towards sangItam. It was then he requested sonTi vEnkaTaramaNayyar of thanjAvUr samastAnam to teach him music.

I think that should be dEsiya tODi which is either same or almost same as sindhubhairavi. The same version was told by Smt. Vishaka Hari as well in one of her Jaya TV Margazhi Mahotsavam programs on tyAgarAjA.

It is high time we request the organisers to bring in new artists from different states say Banglore or Hyderabad or Kerala. We need to listen to the upcoming artistes from diff places and compare the present trend.

I disagree on the melissAna voice front. I've listened to her several times before and do think that she has a ganaMana kural... and a very cultured one too. I do think it's important to judge an artiste on the average and not just look at one bad day. I recently attended at least two kutcheris of top caliber artistes who disappointed me with regards to voice quality and range.
I urge you people to listen to her again whenever you get a chance and not jump to hasty conclusions!

Rasikapriya2, as stated, it was my first impression. And there's nothing wrong about having a mellisAna voice either.
