Smt Sudha Raghunathan presented a well-rounded concert last evening at Fort High School. The concert started late because of the award ceremony presided by former CM of Karnataka Shri SM Krishna. it was awarded posthumously to Shri Kunnaikudi Vaidyanathan and recd by his children.
Smt Sudha's concert began by abt 7.15 PM. She began with the Navaragamalika Varnam, followed by Vandisuvudadiyali gananathana (Nata, with swaras) . Her voice was not at its best at this moment especially at the lower and middle octaves and there were quite a few shruti slips on and off. The maximum impact of the uncooperative voice was in Tulasi dala iin Mayamalawagowla which went all over the place. The kriti was followed by some brisk swaras. This was followed by a brief sketch of Ritigowla and the oft repeated Nannu Vidachi. I think this was the MOST common kriti heard during the current season in Bangalore !! But Sudha's brilliance shone to its full in the elaborate Kalyani Alapana which was quite a delight with the usual high powered brigas and tara sthayi sancharas. The kriti rendered was also a not so often heard one i think--'Sandehamu Yelara Na saami' with neraval at 'Vande Gunashila vaibhavarupa' and some wonderful swaras and kanakku. The tani was also fascinating. I left after this and if someone else has the remainder of the list it would be good to hear/

Thanks for the review Melakartha.
I should say it is really surprising Sudha has sung Sandehamu in Kalyani. Usually she goes about singing either Ethavunara/Kelano (Purandahra)/ Nidhi chala Sukhama/ Ammaravamma. Never herd her rendition of this new krithi. Does anyone have a recorded clip of that. Would love to hear Sudha's version. Of course the other renditions are always flawless.
A Glimpse about Sudha......
Seems like Sudha's voice nowadays is giving her some trouble.. Of course as one ages, voice loses its sharpness and strength and pitch often comes down.
Sudha has reduced her pitch from 51/2 to 5 kattai too, I noticed.
with Sudha, her voice has a penchant for the upper octaves usually.
Now back to the concert....
What nadai was the pallavi in? (Kanda Nada)i is my guess .
