Dear musiclovers,
being new to developing kalpanaswaras on basic ragas, & presently just trying to think of some 2 to 3 sets of swaras for shanmugapriya- can you give me some leads where i can listen to simple swaras in this raga before i get started. simple alap without too many frills wd help too. also specifically can you tell me is there a particular format/ place to insert swaras into a krithi- like whether it shd be done at anupallavi- or charanam stage- how we do generally decide to go abt it?

thankyou

As far as I know, singing kalpanaswaram at the charanam is most common. But, I have heard singers singing swaram at anupallavi in some rare occasions. It is very rare. People sing swaras only in charanam. Listening to singers singing swaram is helpful to get ideas and patterns. But, according to me, swarakalpana is "kalpana". It greatly depends on the mood of the performer and his/her imagination. Even though you hear other singers singing it, you will never be able to reproduce such patterns. It stands good for me. =)
For example, once I heard the song "mari mari ninnE" in the movie sindhubhairavi. As you know, it will be sung in sAramathi and not in kAmbhoji(I think it is kAmbhoji). Even after the song was over, the song was deeply imprinted in my mind. To my astonishment, I started singing swarams and so many beautiful patterns, variations and improvisations just came to my mind and I was singing swarams the whole day! But not even one swaram was in the pattern with which the singer had sung!! =)

Well, it is quite common to sing Swarams at the Pallavi line as well for certain Krithis (first line). I personally don't like that greatly though.

Svarams anywhere are fine for me, best to have it at a very small phrase with complete meaning, so that the phrase can be completed after every round. Even long phrases are OK if they're repeated with maybe small interesting variations after each round.

It all depends. The singer may take up a line which musically lends itelf to a neraval, at times.
Yes, srikant. A small phrase with complete meaning is apt, and if the line is the central thought of the song, it is even better.

Good points by srikant and arasi. For the rAgA in question, ShanmukhapriyA, their points can be illustrated with different kritIs. The kalpana swarAs are typically sung at the charaNam for DIkShitar kritIs such as Siddhi VinAyakam or EkAmrEshanAyakIM whereas the swarAs are typically sung at SannutAnga ShrI (second line of the charaNam) for MarivErE Dikkevaraiyya RAmA (Patnam Subramanya Iyer composition). To begin with, you may wish to listen to several artists' renditions of these and other kritIs to gather some ideas.
