After reading all the 51 posts, I feel as if I had 2 large ones. If some diabetes specialists suggest 2 large ones daily are good for controlling blood sugar, I will certainly follow thieiradvice advice, though not a musician(quite sober now) . jaya mangalam gobilalitha

"Were it not for Soma rasa do you think we would ever have received SAma vEda ? "

"Drinking was part of our vedic culture - "soma paanam", "sura paanam". And it is now part of pub culture. "

Learned members. Based on my reading of Deivathin Kural by Paramacharyal and listening to great upanyasakas like BrahmaShri Sundarkumar, I can say that Soma panam is not similar to today's so called " drinks". It was obtained from Somalatha creeper and used in the great Somayagam. The remnants were distributed in small quantities as prasadam. So, there in no comparing that holy act with today's pub culture.

Sura panam is the same as today's drinks. It is a prohibited act and one of the pancha maha papams. Exceptions to this include some deities like Bhairava etc.

I am giving the link from Deivathin Kural for the benefit of interested forum members. Rasikas who are following Cho's enge brahmanan may also recall giving a similar explanation about Somapanam.

I just wish to point out that Michael Wood in his Fantastic & in my opinion THE BEST account -(based on FACTS in his series "The History of India"- has conclusively shown that Somapanam is still available on the Pakistan-Afghan border near Khyber Pass- turns out to be an extract from the roots of a particular plant....People there are still drinking it! Dear cmlover,
Thanks for the article reference. I read it- actually it was one of several ones that appered when I googled- & the reason I pursued the subject was M.Wood also in conjunction with the experts from Royal Asiatic Society from CaLCUTTA who have the originals of most things on this subject also has successfully traced the location (in conjunction with a famous Russian Archealogist) of where Rig Veda was actually first written etc.
Actually (in my previous"Janma") had taken Advanced Indian History for I.A.S. exams & ended up reading almost all books written on this subject. Needless to say I have been quite DISSATISFIED by the scholars, historians etc...But I find that Americans, Englishmen etc the GOOD ONES, are very thorough. M.Wood appears to be one of these. Have you read his "SMILE OF MURUGAN"?....In any case, I will be happy to mail you a copy of the 2 DVD'S which might interest you if you write me at: [email protected] with your address.
By the way this note is QUITE INDEPENDENT OF THE FORUM DISCUSSION. So I request the other members to excuse me for intruding on their time etc. VKV

I am!

And, what's more, I'd be the first to concede that many of you others are better educated than I in many things, including my own language ;)

(isn't "none" (not one) singular?)

none (= not one/no one), strictly speaking, is singular, and the sentence should have read, 'none of us is an expert in the..' but the wrong form has been prevalent for so long, that dictionaries list it as an acceptable usage..

OED states that 'the verb following none can be singular or plural according to the sense'.

I always defer to the OED... thanks for the clarification :)

Hi Members

Ha for once rasikas on Rasikas. Nice Thread and what newyorker started deserves special mention as we observe all these both from the stage and also from the audience part while listening.
Let it take the Hilarious route with accent on educating both rasikas and artistes.
