An enjoyable and good concert. Right from the word go, duo created good impression and the items presented were well chosen, either be it raga, tala or composer. Varnam was sung in two speeds for pallavi, anupallavi and mukthayi swarams. swaras were sung well in gowlai, with different eduppu - sri maha, ganapathi and mathanga mukha. Shyama sastri swarajathi masterpiece was sung in vilamba kalam, and the brothers presented it very well. Seethamma mayamma was sung in madhyama kalam, and neraval & swaras were surprising, as i didn't expect, as i thought it is more as a filler before sub main. Todi alapana was shared between the brothers, they took turns too aften. Srikrishna started the alapana, and ramkumar took over after panchamam. Then after, every few minutes, they alternated. The alapana was detailed, and covered two octaves, frequent alternation was little distracting though. Neraval was executed well in both kalams. Srikrishna announced that they will present Jog RTP, in S R G M P N S scale (chalanata janyam??) and said different scales in vogue. Raga alapana was done elaborately, around 15 minutes, and violin response was equally good. Tanam was sung with mrudangam accompaniment, and it didn't seem hindustani raga at all!! Brothers presented it very well. Pallavi was very very brief, they sung the pallavi couple of times, and launched into swaras. ragamalika swara was also good, the transitioned from one raga to next raga, and then came to pallavi in new raga. Like, srikrishna sang jog, and then mohanam, and pallavi was completed in mohanam. Ramkumar started in mohanam, and transitioned to hindolam, and got back to pallavi in hindolam, and violin reply was in hindolam. While replying to revati swaras, violist had some problem with bow, and srikrishna started with revati swaras, and then after a minute or so, violin response continued. At the end of swaras, trikalam was done. Tani was good, no one left the venue, because hardly 30 to 40 were attending the concert(;- After tani, they got back to pallavi in 2nd kalam, and then sang in regular speed. I was expecting few more post tani items, but concert completed with jagadodharana, hamsanandi thillana and mangalam.
A good concert, and enjoyable evening. Brothers have a bright future definitely, and need to watch out. It is a pity that turnout was poor. No speeches in the concert, that was a big plus!!!

they sang the jog pallavi at BGS during season with a different ragamalika mix though. Great to know that they did this at Bang, with the soothing climate there Jog is the raga for an evening concert. Well i have never heard them sing Dasukovalena, maybe during the season this time.
Good review Hari, u covered everything.
Hmmm, IPL semi finals involving Banglore, i wouldnt blame the crowd that did not turn up.

Arasi - Right, they didn't sing any ST keerthana. How much of swathi keerthanas are sung these days? I hear them only in Parasala ponnamaal's concerts.arasi wrote:Hari,
Not that it is that relevant (just because they come from Kerala), but no ST kruti?
No speeches and a sparse crowd? A blessing and a pity, in that order!
Yes, I hope to listen to them this coming season.
Also, at the end of concert, one gentleman walked up, and thanked then for singing a PD keerthana, but said, it should have come earlier in the concert(;-

Wow!!! Jog RTP eh!!! you guys in Bangalore are really lucky. I have never heard of this raga being elaborated in the carnatic scene as much. As Coolkarni said, I have heard Jog mainly from light classical songs in Malayalam. I felt the mood of the raga suited ghazals really well.. A rAgam and thAnam in Jog might have been quite a treat.
Will have to watch out for the trichur brothers !!! hope they come to bombay to perform too..

To compensate for that sparse attendance and to listen to that carnatified Jog (which coolkarni can explain as to how much it matches with the original HM

That jog was my bait. coolkarni has spoiled me enough and so I am a fan of jog. Hence I went to sangitapriya to search, and guess what I landed on your gold mine! I did not know you are the 'hariharan' who is doing yeoman service at that site and to thousands of CM fans over the globe.
dhanyavaad!
yes coolkarni!
CM performers should look for inspiration from HM for new ragas/approaches to enrich CM so that our new breed of vaggeyakaras can compose exciting new 'uruppaDis' in them ( Are you listening Arasi?)

I notice that Trichur Bros father, Sri Trichur Mohan, exclusively accompanies them (on mrudangam) in concerts. Nithyasri's dad used to do the same for her for a long time. Some other artistes have stock accompanists for the majority of concerts.
I think if they had different accompanists they would get new ideas and their concerts will have greater variety. What do others think?

I think, mohan's question is whether by having a different mrudangam vidwan, can artist learn new ideas faster? I think, answer is yes and no!!! Consider for example, MS Amma had Murthy mama accompanying most of the time, and DKP amma had Palghat Mani Iyer. Didn't they go to up in the career? Also, we have heard of vidwans learning for accompanying artists, like Sanjay learning from Nagai Muralidharan on vivdadi ragas...

I just heard the tAnam of Jog by the brothers . It looks there is a definite padAntra difference in the way Jog is handled between the brothers and suryaprakash jog rtp. While brothers are aligning more as a chAlanAttai janyam as s_hari indicated in the first post, suryaprakAsh that day's jog RTP was a cross of thillang(major)+ nAttai (minor)
Very very brilliant rendition and extremely well executed tAnam and pallavi , kudos trichur brothers.

Other advantages and disadvantages of having customary mrudangam players: Yes, they would know the sAhityams well and would play more effectively than a new accompanist.
No, the comfort zone may get to be too comfortable that drawing from each other won't be a refreshing experience for either and staleness may set in.
CML, your remark about Jog to me:
Is it another one of your baits?
Well, they are not like ASu kavi. Yet, the compositions are triggered by some inspiring rendition (every time we use the word rendition now, we feel like saying: manniccukkOppA Uday!). I recently got a song in one such rAgam. Will run it by you sometime...
