Most people have an ID that is:
1) their name, or a contracted form,
2) their name, followed by things like their year of birth, or whatever number they could follow with and get a fresh ID,
3) a musical instrument, their favourite, or the instrument they play,
4) a song or ragam's name
5) an artist or composer's name with things like "fan", "devotee" etc.
6) or "Carnatic music" followed by fan/lover etc., or things like that
The other IDs are almost always very interesting, I invite people to discuss them, and people with such IDs to enlighten on how they came up with it.

They were shocked to hear some carnatic stuff from an engg college guy. (sorry that was their mindset) . They asked who is the singer and i replied semmangudi srinivasa iyer and after a bit og ragging i was finally christened "SEMMU" after the mahA vidhwAn.. that name stuck and even professors used to call me by that name only ....

For sheer camouflage, the top prize goes to Vasanthakokilam. For a whole year, that name invoked images of a lady, and after the truth was revealed, I had considerable difficulty coming to terms with it.
Coolji suggested it might break hearts, but I was safe on that count because the image I had was that of an academic middle-aged lady, so my feelings were those of pure reverence such as one might have for an aunt or that elderly lady down the street.
But even now, the thought that Vasanthakokilam might have a moustache makes me shudder.

I think that the fact that a cuckoo (kOkilam) that heralds spring (vasanta) is assumed to be female can be considered 'offensively sexist' as the organizer's comment featured in this thread - http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... savam.html

To assuage Girish, I looked around to see if NCV had acted as a male character ( with preferably a moustache ) in any of her films, like MSS had done. I have not found any yet.!!
This is turning out to be another hilarity centered thread. CML asked in the other hilarity thread about the story behind the id. The story itself is not funny but the id has been a source of mirth ever since.
For quite a long time ( more than 10-15 years ), I was not not part of any online community related to carnatic music after I somehow stopped following rec.music.indian.classical . Sometime in 2006, on a whim, I decided to see what sort of online communities have developed around carnatic music and I stumbled up on sangeetham.com . I decided to register and needed to pick an id. I looked around and saw people using their favorite artists, ragas, etc as id's. NCV was my gateway to CM long time back with her Elavathara in Mukhari that AIR used to play around 7 A.M. Oblivious to the obvious confusions it can cause and not being sure if I was going to hang around that forum for long, without any hesitation I picked my favorite artist's name.
I think it was Arasi who first mentioned something which alerted me to this gender confusion which I then obtusely clarified
Later on, when we all moved to rasikas.org, there was an occasion to change it but by that time the id had stuck and I decided to stick with it at rasikas as well.

Spring cuckoo,
Why would you not stick with your name? As Girish says, it is the best sounding name on the forum! Initially I was a little disappointed on your disclosure, coming to know that you were not part of the minority here--which makes me say this: I am happy to learn that Appu is Aparna! Though we have Suji, Vidya, Punarvasu, Punarvasu, rajeeram and other female forumites, and those who remain incognito, it is nice to feel that the forum has more and more women members.
Semmu,
I like the way your ID came about. A nice short name it turned out to be too.
Srikant,
My name has a similar history. In my youth, a dear cousin of mine (vibrant with life but was plucked away in her prime), would greet me with 'varuga arasi', translating my name into thamizh. When I used to write a column ages ago, and had to use another name for a story that I wrote for the same rag, I called myself Arasi, and the name stuck. I write under that name in tamizh, and I use the same name at Rasikas.
By the way, there are many here who write under their very own names and are very original.
As for preferences, I like short names--easy to type--look how we have VK, CML and such shortened versions. Unless they tickle my fancy, I am not for long names. Some favorites of mine: humdinger, inconsequential, Rain of Nectar (tEn mazhai?) and the new mazhai, braindrain, of course, for whatever reason, Jayan! There are some other out of the way tags which are a bit odd for my taste. I am not going to name them! srkris was difficult to write without any vowels at first, so too Krishna's name
When comes to a one of a kind (two of a kind?) name, it is Ravi's. Or Shankar's? I am speaking of rshankar!

CML,
The very epitome of what we are all about, that is what your name suggests, mon ami...
Ravi,
pittan enRAlum, pEyan enRAlum: sometime or other, all of us, at all times, a few of us!
Vidya,
I did not know there were so many out of this world names among those who do not post. I was thinking of a few who have posted and have made my eyes pop!

What's in a name? asked the bard of Stratford-upon-Avon
Lots, it seems.
Wasn't it recently that we read on this forum about Sharma(?) who used a female sounding moniker, and had a long line of suitors writing to him...! I thought that was funny!
Any other such stories? I am sure there's one waiting to be written! (next serial by srinivas?

Yes! What's in a name?
We are one big Rasika Family. That's all it counts.
We have personal feelings for the welfare of each one among us. We share happy events with complimentary messages (even attending if possible) and condole if there is a sad event. That is above and beyond our love for CM. Even though we disagree on a number of issues, even though some of us have a strong individuality our common love for CM binds us all together. I am proud to be a member of the rasikas.org Community. I consider it a badge of honour. I personally forget all my woes (physical or mental) when I am with you all here. I pray to God that we maintain this convivial spirit and atmosphere always.

A rose is a rose is a rose
but suppose there are
those who chose coarse
names--'out with them!',
say the mods who never
repose--of course, what's
in a name, exclaim those
who have not seen 'hose
them out!' kind of monikers
which can give you jitters--
but mark my words,
the mods are not quitters
their vigilence matters...

Tut, tut, that wasn't meant as a response to your verse, CML. It was my response to the serial scribe.
Hark, who comes hither?
The historical's chorus?
Away with you, upstarts!
SVR has his wards who
Have to win awards! Hie!
Back to the future! Wait
Thy turn antiquity, prithee!

Dear all,
Back in 2004/2005 when i registered with the sangeetham BBoard, i was thinking hard for a nick name. Any nick which had to do with CM or a stalwart (and that sounded nice) was already in use. Eventually, not knowing what to think of (and reasoning along the lines of 'what is in a name'), this nick came up in my head. In retrospect, it seems to fit me pretty well, given the stalwarts that are participating in this forum and the topics, discussed
Regards
