Here it is arasi, just in case you have forgotten some words.

sakala kalA vANiyE. rAgA: kEdAra. Adi tALA.

P: sakala kalA vANiyE sharaNam tAyE sangIta vINA pANiyE
A: ihamum paramum nalla sukham aruLum kalviyai
engaLukkaruLvAi mangaLa shelviyE
C1: arum poruL inbamum Atralum AyuLum Attuma jnAnamum pUttup-pugazh shiranda
tiram petra dhIrarAi tiruvuDai vIrarAi dEsha nalam puriyum divya varam taruvAi
2: muduperum pulavarum munivarum pOTriya mupperum arivuDan ippOdu viLangiDum

Thank you, Lakshman.
I HAD forgotten a caraNam line!

igamum paramum nalla sugam 'aLikkum' kalviyai is how we were taught. Since aruLuvAi comes soon after, I would go for aLikkum.

caraNam1. aRam (dharmam)--not arum

Ravi,
does the mupporuL aRivu which comes later in the song refer to aRam, poruL, inbam?

The way he beautifully weaves love and service to the country in the song is endearing. Also, his reverence for the past and the eagerness for learning all that is new and valuable is worth noting. The magic of the name name Bharathi brings on the vision, I suppose!

This may be a slightly different version of the song that you learnt. This song appears in the book Sampradaya Haribhajana Bhajanamrtam.
In another booklet titled Shuddhananda Isai Amudam the text is probably like what you remember:
A: ihamum paramum nalla sukhamaLikkum kalviyai engLukkaruLvAi mangaLa selviyE
C1: aram poruL inbamum ATralum arLum
Atma jnAnamum pUttu pugazh siranda
dhiram peTra dhIrarAi tiruvuDai vIrarAi
dEsha nalam puriyum divya varam taruvAi
C2: mudu perum pulavarum munivarum pOTriya mupperum arivuDan ippodu viLangiDum
pudu-pudu kalaigaLum poruLgaLum arindingE
pUraNarAga vAzhum puNNiyam aruLuvAi

Narayan,

Here is my attempt at the meaning:

sakala kalA vANiyE. rAgA: kEdAra. Adi tALA.

pallavi
sakala kalA vANiyE sharaNam tAyE sangIta vINA pANiyE

We seek refuge (SaraNam) in mother (tAyE) sarasvatI (vANiyE) who holds a divinely musical (sangIta) vINA in her hands (pANiyE) and is the repository of all (sakala) art forms (kalA).

anupallai
ihamum paramum nalla sukham aruLum kalviyai engaLukkaruLvAi mangaLa shelviyE

Oh auspicious (maNgaLa) damsel (SelviyE)! Please bless (aruLvAi) us (engaLukku) with knowledge (kalviyai) that will grant/bring (aruLum) us wholesome and abundant (nalla) enjoyment/happiness (sukham) not just in this world (ihamum) but in the next (paramum) as well.

caraNam 1
aRam poruL inbamum ATRalum AyuLum Attuma jnAnamum pUttup-pugazh shiranda
tiram peTRa dhIrarAi tiruvuDai vIrarAi dEsha nalam puriyum divya varam taruvAi

Oh dEvI, please grant (taruvAi) us divine (divya) boons so that we can exist as wealthy (tiruvuDai), [1] brave (vIrarAi) and valorous (dhIrarAi) human beings who cause/desire the welfare (nalam) of our country (dESa), having acquired (peTRa) moral virtue (aRam), material wealth (poruL), happiness (inbamum), great strength (ATRalum), a long life-span (AyuLum), self (Attuma) realization (jnAnamum), flourishing (pUttu) fame (pugazhum), and superlative (Siranda) abilities (tiRam).

caraNam 2
muduperum pulavarum munivarum pOTriya mupperum arivuDan ippOdu viLangiDum
pudup-pudu kalaigaLum poruLgaLum arindingE pUraNarAga vAzhum puNNiyam aruLvAi

Please bless (aruLvAi) us with the moral merit (puNNiyam) of living (vAzhum) complete and well rounded (pUraNarAga) lives here (ingE) on this earth, having acquired the three (mu) great (perum) [2] types of wisdom (aRivuDan) praised (pOTRiya) by old and wise (muduperum) poets (pulavarum) and sages (munivarum) so that we can understand/experience (arindu) new and recent (pudu-pudu) art forms (kalaigaLum) and concepts (poruLgaLum) [3] that are currently (ippodu) in vogue/have become renowned (viLangiDum).

FOOTNOTES
[1] tiruvuDai - not sure if this is correct - I have translated it contextually
[2] In posts #6 and #7, Arasi and I felt that this was aRam, poruL and inbam, but since Sri Suddhananda Bharati has explicitly mentioned these three in the first caraNam, I wonder if 'mupperum aRivu' refers to something else. The three types of wisdom according to the Bible are worldly Wisdom, Solomonic Wisdom, and the Wisdom of God for men. Not sure what these will be in the context of our philosophy and culture
[3] poruL can mean material things, but I think it means 'essence' in this context

Ravi,
1: tiru in this context would belong with their valor--valor which has tiru--azhagu, uyarvu. noble valor?

2: manasA vAcA cAyA? Just a wild guess.

3: Agree with you.

The saHITYAM IS:
muduperum pulavarum munivarum pOTriya mupperum aRivuDan ippOdu viLangiDum
pudup-pudu kalaigaLum poruLgaLum aRindingE pUraNarAga vAzhum puNNiyam aruLvAi

since Shri sudhdhAnanda bhArati says,
'mupperum aRivuDan ippOdu viLangiDum pupdupudu kalaigaLum aRindingE etc,
I feel, 'mupperum aRivu' may mean 'iyal, isai, nATakam'.
He is asking goddess saraswathi to grant him the knowledge on all these.

Punarvasu,
Just saw your posts. The following line: ippOdu viLangiDum pudup puduk kalaigaLum makes me think that you are right (did he mean pudup puduk kalaigaL with film in mind?).

Wonder what Rajani and others think.

This song takes me back to my High School days in Musiri, Tiruchi Dist. in the Forties. In the good old days all the students and the teachers assembled for the morning prayer. Although we had a few girl students in the school, it was mostly one of two boy students, both my classmates, who delivered a prayer song of his choice. One of the two, one Mr. A. Vaithilingam used to sing either this "sakala kalA vANiyE" in kEdhAram or "jAnaki ramaNa dasaratha nandana" in kApi. I earnestly hope Vaithilingam would see this post and respond. I don't know where he is now, in his late seventies!
