This ragam is specially close to my heart. And Baalagopala is just a breathtaking composition. There has not been one practice session when I havent experienced myself getting overwhelmed whenever I reach the line 'AaNavAdi vijaya mAnasakara' in the charanam. Such a lovely composition and raga combination is indeed rare. Dikshitar has very well brought out the emotions of the lyrics of this composition beautifully with the help of this pristine ragam.
MS's RTP in NaadaSudha Rasa is another mystifying experience which all carnatic connoisseurs ought to hear.
This ragam sounds really good if sung in a slow pace(vilambam). If the gamakas surrounding the two dhaivathams are properly exploited I guess ur Bhairavi should be really good.
This is one ragam which has given me peace and bliss which none else has managed to. Bhairavi is a ragam which truly evokes the Bhakti in you

Hi i am new to this board, but i have been learning music since i was3 1/2. Bhairavi, in my opinion is a very challenging yet, extremely enjoyable raga. Some of the best songs are in bhairavi, Upacharamu jesevarunnarani maravakura, enati nomu phalamu, Ikanannu Brovakunna. Aside from these Thyagaraja compositions, there is the exceptional swarajathi by Syamashastri, Kamakshi. There are several rare ones, like Raksha Bettare doraku and Chetulara sringaramu jesi that are an absolute delight to encounter, because not only are they perfect rhythm and tune wise, but the meaning is splendid! Thanks for giving me a chance to express the beauty of Bhairavi

To me, the best Bhairavi is Dikshithar's Baalagopaala, depending on who sings it. Viriboni (Varnam), Raksha Bettare (Thyagaraja) and Rama Kodhandha Rama (Thyagaraja) runs close behind, followed by Syama Sastri's Amba kaamaakshi and Arunachala Kavirayar's Yaaro Ivar Yaaro...
For some reason, I did not like Papanasam Sivans Thaye Yezhaippal.

My earliest fancy was for the lines of MS-Sundaresa Suguna brinda Dasaratha Nandana- in Enati nomu phalamo. They would always give me the goosebumps.
anyway here is a rendering by TRS of the same kriti.

I have always felt that the privilege of listening to this song by MSS comes definitely under the category of 'E nATi nOmu phalamO, E dAna phalamO?'!My earliest fancy was for the lines of MS-Sundaresa Suguna brinda Dasaratha Nandana- in Enati nomu phalamo. They would always give me the goosebumps.
I love her version of AK's 'yArO? ivar yArO?'...as well as the DKP/DKJ version of the same song.

TRS has acknowledged , at many places , his fascination for GNB's music.
So it is not surprising.
I have another clip of Samaja .I dont know where I picked it , but it starts somewhere in the middle and stops abruptly .Inspite of that, this clip is vintage TRS and very remniscent of GNB
here it is

I am polishing a nice RTP of TRS as well as vocal renderings of Chintayamakanada by DKJ, Brinda Muktha and MLV.
will upload later in the day.

Feels good to be back (as a part of Carnatic music forum). After the Sangeetham.com (temp???) maintenance shutdown, I too ended up shutting myself off. A friend of mine directed me to this group..And I see a lot of familiar names.
Saw this topic on Bhairavi and could not resist penning my thoughts on this exquisite raaga.
For the uninitiated (in formal training) like me, there is always this one raagam/singer that would make a person sit up and say ... "Oh my!! why did I not listen to Carnatic Music before". That was prety much how my journey with Carnatic music started 4 years ago listening to Bhairavi expounded by MMI. I do not know if it was MMI's inimitable charm or the sheer beauty of the raaga or maybe both.
Ever since, as my knowledge in this domain grew in tiny steps, i still rated MMI's Bhairavi as amongst the best. Until I heard MS's Yaaro Ivar Yaaro. Oh the sheer bliss of the rendition and to think the piece lasts all of 4 odd minutes!
Amongst the other Bhairavi renditions i like are Somu's and MDR's Amba Kamakshi. Correct me if I'm wrong, listening to Bhairavi presented by most artists gives an impression this raagam deserves a very serene and sobre delineation. MMI seems to bring a whole new aspect to the raagam.. Just my thought. I may be wrong on this

You put me on a wild goose chase here.
initially did not realise that it was impossible to get a rendering other than mdr-chembai-ssi.Very very strange.
http://rapidshare.com/files/9865860/amb ... i.mp3.html
anyway here is a track of voleti singing it without accompanists.
I have added a tailpiece- a grand one from an AIR recital- by Kiranavali on the chitraveena. It has all the majesty of a good male rendering.
my apologies for getting back to rapidshare.rogepost is a bit roguish today.

Bhairavi is one of my favorites as well. KV Narayanaswami's RTP "Govindanadi Mukundanadi yenakku avar sondamadi" is simply awesome! The Ariyakudi school specializes in Tyagaraja's "Koluvaiyunnade" as does the Musiri school in Patnam Subramaniam Iyer's "Neepaadamule". The tamil padams "Velavare," "Inimel avarakkum," and "Muhattaikattiya deham" are in a class by themselves as is the ravishingly beautiful javali "Yelaraada kaamini." Brinda and Mukta's rendition of Kshetrayya's "Rama rama" is veritable feast indeed. Does one know if there are tillanas in this raga?

I have just learnt about this site from youtube and am here. I am an ardent lover of canatic music.
Bhairavi owes its origin to the Raag Natabairavi which is a melakartha Raag. I am informed that apart from natabairavi, anandha bairavi also belongs to this melakartha raag.
At the same time, I find a lot of similarity amongst Bhairavi, Mukhari and Hussaini.
Will you please enlighten on the differences in Arokana and Avarohana of these Raagas?
Do all these raags belong to Suddha Madhyamam?
Again, what is the raag in Hindusthani, which is close to raag Bhairavi.? Raag Bairavi so named in Hindushthani classical Music is indeed our Sindhu Bairavi only. Do the other raags for instance anandha bairavi, mukhari also find a place in HCM..?
