Doordarshan has released, recently, many VCDs and CDs (both CM and HM) of concerts from its archives. For example, I got VCDs of MS, MLV, Sheik Chinnamoulana and Namagiripettai Krishnan. I know more are scheduled for release in the near future. I do not know if you can get them outside India but I do not think that should be a problem.
rshankar.
The way this forum is developing, just keep praying for an exclusive x drive for this forum . And a good soul(read wealthier) to upload large Video files.
I will make sure that you -and other members of this forum-will not miss out on atleast the most famous broadcasts.
You should also find out if one is not violating any copyright by doing this.(no commercial vcd here.all through the vcr-cd conversion-route)
Since mallikarjun mansoor and ashtapadis have found mention here,
I would like add info about two more releases.
1.Mallikarjun Mansoor-all his interviews and TV performances.
Has a great Yaman Kalyan
2.A mind blowing VCD of Kelucharan Mohapatra. Some of the ashtapadis to which he has danced -no words to describe them.
There is also a scintillating dance by his disciple-late samyuktha panigrahi-
CML
where does the north meet the south ?
there are some clues in this vcd....
a few pointers for people residing in India. Most of these programs are coming back with reruns-at odd times though. If your PC is equipped with software to capture Videos from your cable TV Connection,(Costs approx rs.3500 these days), you can make a killing...

Kulkarni sa'ab,
Is the Kelucharan Mahopatra VCD from DD? I have had some bad luck with ordering VCDs from DD: the ones of 100 years of bharatanatyam, and MSS were great, but of the 2 VCDs of MLV, one was completely unplayable!
BTW, since you brought up the issue of copyrights, can you tell me if I would be violating any if I uploaded songs from commercially available CDs?
Thanks.
Ravi

I was asking you !!
I have already stuck out one arm by uploading .Willing to risk the other also.
But not my neck
Kelucharan..yes from DD.also Mansoor.
MLV the one I purchased was playable though.
Next time you come to chennai , you can try for a replacement.
I have found them to absolutely wonderful -i mean at the AIR Chennai where I purchased these.
The last time I went to AIR Chennai to Purchase Vcds ,They Took us on a 60 minute conducted tour around the facility-just because my little son showed some interest around the place. We even entered a Studio where a Live Program was being relayed ...
I am sure they will not refuse a replacement.
( you may have to take care that your hands dont get chopped off at the doors, they are so heavy !!)

I don't want any of us here to get into the same predicament that Napster et al got into! Maybe there are some lawyers here that can help us figure out the sanctitiy and ethics of these uploads. Kulkarni sa'ab you are 'probably' OK when you upload stuff that you were able to record personally: that was for personal use.
By the way, I got all the VCDs (MLVs included) through kutcheribuzz.com
When I was in Madras last December, I did not have the opportunity to get the disc replaced. I will try when I isit next (who knows when that'll be?).
I will try and order Kelucharanji's VCD from DD.
BTW, if you have not heard ARIs varNam in bEgadA, the upload was for you specifically!
Thanks for everything!
Ravi Shankar

thanks for the begada varnam.
my uploads- i do take a lot of care.though i doubt if lawyers can advise us on the ethics part here..
Like most things in life, one has to go by an inner voice. My voice is that of a missionary(my vatican is in atlanta and my pope is raju asokan!)
Though I am digressing a bit, it will be important, since at some point our intentions may be questioned.
Why do i doubt that the judicial process can decide this issue?
.( am not referring to commercial cds/tapes-there the issue is very clear)
I remember reading a very enlightening article by PV Indiresan in Hindu during the heights of the cauvery water war.He was making a case for a negotiated settlement , not depending on the law of the day as a basis. His point was that laws cannot handle such issues. To buttress his argument he referred to a classic judicial dilemma, which is taught in law schools(Now I am speaking from memory, so the words may not be exact , but i will get the point across)
A flute is found abandoned under a tree in a farm. The question who is the rightful owner of it.
1.The landlord who owns that farm
2.The chap who found it
3.The chap who can make best use of it
4.the chap who needs it most -italics are mine
and two other types -my memory fails me.
and he went on to prove that a judge has to balance many issues before he arrives at a judgement.
My own journey through this wonderland called CM (can we just explain it in a thread) started when My late father wanted to rekindle his memories -as a young boy studying in ramakrishna Mutt bangalore with all those great stalwarts performing around. As I kept returning to my hometown every six months with 100s of concert tapes, the effect on him was unbelievable!and i replicated this effect so many times with so many people.and in turn i have educated myself.
I dont believe one can absorb heritage by paying *** rs for a walk past a few houses in mylapore .pausing at the residences of composers and musicians.
This is technology at its best.
a forum which starts like any other- a very keen and sharp administrator-a willingness to adapt and change every day, wonderful contributors with music, posts and the links-i am sure no judge will ever find fault with this sincere desire to understand this great heritage.
and we have not even scratched the surface.
I have had my own brush with celebrities(read muisc artists) on this issue but i seem to have convinced them that raising the awareness level of an average rasika today is the only way to ensure that these arts survive in their full glory. The kind of buyers who argue with the muisc shop salesman for more number of kritis per tape-a an index of a good buy-they all need a mode of transport to the higher reaches.Once upon a time I was like them !

The very first question of Ravi shankar - I too am very eagar to re-view the video telecast by DD in late 70's when he released the 72 mela ragamalika, where many greats of carnatic music featured and talked of many illustrative events. In fact, Semmangudi talked of the affection of Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai in the small boy of Seenu, whenever they travelled together for concerts.
If anyone could influence DD personnel to re-telecast those episodes, it would be very interesting to watch again.
