Bhogindra saayinam - Kuntalavarali
Varugalaamo - maanji
Niraimadi mugam - tirupugazh - Hamsanandi
Pavamaana- saurashtram.

Good things first.

The brothers are awesome singers . They have bight future.
It was good to know violinist and ghatam artists were bombay based and they did a good job.
The hall was crowded which was surprising considering weekday and they stayed till the end of 3 hour concert.

It was a wonderful performance by the 2 youngsters.
Good song selection ,both singing wonderfully in unison .In all awesome 3 hours concert.

They started with brisk maaate giving wonderful swarams followed by a natanarayani rare song.

kanchi Kamakshi was sung beautifully with both the brothers alternating making the effect divine.

Sadachaleshwaram alaapanai was done by both brothers deftly and the swaras had good kanakku.

Mokshamu galada followed by shri kantani but it was a very fast racy number.

This made the finearts person to comment in the short break during felicitations that they proved they are good chartered accountants with ekachakka kanaku in swarams.

The RTP was done beautifully in Dharmavati with both brothers excelling each other.
Madhavan anticipated and returned well.

The songs that followed Ramanai bhajitaal, jamuna tiree, bhogindra saayinam and varugalamo
were all movingly melodiously rendered.

Their father Mohan was on the mridangam giving good support although I felt the thani was a bit long.It was understood as he is father of the vocalists.

Violin by Madhavan and Ghatam by shaktidhar both Bombay artists deserve a applause.

A wonderful concert most enjoyable.

Wishing the brothers more success.

Thank you, Anandabhairavi for the review. Makes me want to hear them the coming season. Yes, a substantial concert, it seems.
Father of the vocalists or not, a long tani is a long tani!

Can Anandabhairavi or the mods edit the title of the topic to Trichur Brothers and not leave it as ichur Brotheres?

Yes, the brothers sang well; I left soon after the thani was over.
Minor corrections-the bhavapriya song was -Srikanta-Neeyeda.
The pallavi went as "harE rAma gOvinda murArE mukunda shourE murahara'.
RTP in dharmvati-I felt the brothers were singing more in hindustani style esp. the elder one; the other one sang slightly more in carnatic style;only Shri Madhavan played dharmavati in the true carnatic style.
Yes, the thani lasted nearly 16 minutes I think.

Punarvasu,
Yes, some do not know that.
But 'madam'! When they add 'sir' when it comes to addressing every man on the forum, I don't mind being called 'madam'. Am I right in thinking that you do not want to have an appendage to your name either?

Yes- extremely talented singers-very good concert. But the concert would have been complete if only they had neravl in atleast one of the songs.A three hour carnatic concert without neraval in any keerthani ?They seem to have all the talent.-Madhavan's Dharmavathi was definitely better than the vocalists! They seem to have a tendency to sing ragams in hindustani style-both of them singing  in phases etc. it was very melodious to listen tho!I would have personally liked to hear them sing  a  thodi/shankarabharanam/Kambhoji -am sure they would have done very well too! Also no swaram singing in 2 kalams anywhere. Not a crticism at all but just observations.

Looks like the brothers did a good job. Good luck to them. Unfortunately, overseas travel kept me from attending.

I am sure the krithis were rendered well, but bhUpALa, sAramati and bhavapriyA back-to-back is perhaps not the most intelligent selection.

A concert without niraval in any krithi is, unfortunately, quite a sad development. Just singing a pallavi niraval does not cut it...

Prashant, that is what I thought-esp. bhUpALam and bhavapriya.

neraval is sangathi, style or tradition, what is it?

Well as a layman I enjoyed the concert not worrying about neravals or intelligent selections. For me it was pure 3 hours of bliss!I felt this is what pulls people like us to the carnatic music rather than worrying about intricacies!

I still remember an internal company email from one of the brothers (I forget which), inviting us to attend his concert at Raga Sudha. Since I was packing in something like 50 concerts that season anyway, I decided I could do worse than provide check out whether the bloke had any stuff in him...My skepticism was quickly dissolved in some lusty swarams for Siddhi Vinayakam - it was the day before the Tsunami devastated the Coromandel coast...

Eventually, Mr. Mohan moved on from our company - to focus exclusively on music, I was given to understand - and although I remained continually curious about their progress, I next heard them only during Season 2007 at the MFAC. My post-concert ruminations should ordinarily have been consumed by the giant leap in their technical expertise had their song selection not been almost absurd for a primetime concert in front in the middle of Mylapore. I have the list with me - Varnam in Saraswathi, Jambupathe, Brova Bharama, Neerada Sama , Sree Sathyanarayanam, PAgavini and RTP in Brundavana SAranga...I remember one of our esteemed forum members walking out in frustration after 3rd or 4th song!

Much the same could be said of this concert. Technically there isn't a lot that separates them from the top dogs but their song selection is rather avant garde for this greying old fogey. My former colleague (the one to the left of the audience) also likes to be venturesome in his raga intepretations - here I have to mention that the siblings and I were jointly subjected to a brilliantly bizarre exposition of Dharmavathi by the Hyderabad Brothers a couple of years ago....I wonder if that left a mark....

Trichur and Darur are, however, miles apart when it comes to presentational aspects. The youngsters seem to be making a loud point about sharing the stage equally, tossing alaapanas back and forth phrase-wise, in a tennis match of musical ideas. I have nothing against on-stage egality but to me an alaapana is a very personal creative construct, a copulative interpretation of which can only sire ambiguity. The cause of fairness would be served better if alaapanas are captained by each brother in turn, with the other limiting his role to embellishing key phrases, highlighting the constant and such, in the manner of a violinist.

Notwithstanding the above, the brothers are among the most promising vocal pairs in the circuit and it won't be long before they ascend the highest stage. There wasn't a dull moment during the concert and judging from the intermittent eruptions of tcchs and gasps around the auditorium, I was not the only one who felt that way.

Vijay,
Welcome back to the Reviews! KAlingA warrior is now a householder :)

As usual, your comments are pertinent and poetic. Yes, AlApanAs don't have to be shared equally. That to a degree impedes manOdharmam.

Wow, Vijay what a review, I admit I had the Wikepedia in front of me to decipher some phrases.

Their song selection in Banglore, one of our forum members had written about it, was more enjoyable for a knowledgable audience, i guess.

However i must say that this is extremely subjective and can differ from person to person. For example I loved the MFAC concert you talked about irrespective of the fact that they did not sing any Ghana ragas. And if you missed the last season at MFAC, they did Dasharathe in Thodi and Soga Soga in Sri Ranjani as major items. And that was as good as Shri Sathyanarayanam for me. Anyways as i said this is subjective and personal.

And Vijay did u actually attend the concert in Mumbai? Are u based out of mumbai or chennai or Banglore? Just curious. And i am a big fan of ur reviews. Keep them coming and congrats on ur tying the knot.

Thanks Arasi...the warrior has been grounded at least

Thanks CK, am based in mumbai but travel frequently around the country so you shouldn't be surprised to find me in a CM audi no matter where you are! Good writing should not need a wiki so I apologize - in retrospect, parts of my write-up were unwieldy and labored.

No I did not hear them at MFAC but did catch parts of the Brahma Gana SAbha concert. Yeah raga choice is a personal matter and I am normally not too puritanical about ghana ragas - their song selection just struck me as very unconvevntional in both the concerts. As I pointed out, they did full justice to the items they selected.

The only drawback is the amount of work one has to do--and traffic jams and flight delays..

Welcome back, vijay! Great review and I absolutely agree about rapidly alternating raga alapanais--they seem to lose any vision or coherence whatsoever very quickly and become rather confusing. If they really need to share the alapanai, the Malladi Bros convention of one covering the madhya sthayi and the other the tara sthayi is quite effective (but they only do this in the main raga).

Vijay"s observation is very constructive and good guide for the upcoming Trichur Brothers. I like how Vijay approached the whole performance.

Well T.N.Krishnan mama recently played mukhari, salaga bhairavi and ananda bhairavi back to back and yeah at times ragas were interwining infact he also mentioned it that he played them back to back.though the crowd did'nt bother.probably nobody even realised that.hahahah however some of our rasikas would have probably listened to that concert as well.they would have realised that.
