Under the banner ‘Lalitha Sangeeta Lahari’ owned by Shri A.Ramanatha Shastry, Hyderabad, yesterday evening I have attended a Vocal music concert of Chi. Sow. Pantula Rama successfully accompanied by Chi.M.Shrinivasa Narasimha Murthy on Violin and Chi. V.Venkataramana on Mridangam. She took off with Kalyani-Adi-Varna and continued with a nice Khanda-nada-piece of Ooothukadu in Gambheeranata, followed by soothing Sogasujoodataramaa-Kannadagaula-Rupakam, scintillating sub-main of Chandrajyothi (Shashidvadana-Adi), Nanugannathalli-Sindhukannada-Adi, majestic main of Shankarabharana (Manasu Svaadheenamaina-Chapu), Narayanai Raaga and Taana. Later I had to leave off and was told to have sung a brief Pallavi in Adi-dvi-kala-chaukam starting at the 7th unit of the ring-finger followed by Mridangam-tani and Annamacharya-keertana etc. Even though I had to leave off in the midst of the concert and missed the efficient Mridangam-tani I felt the concert was a full-delicious meal. While she sang every thing with great ease and very musical, (while the wives, having no other way, are, in general, compelled to follow their husbands) the husband-violinist, letting her sing very efficiently, successfully followed her efficiently and affectionately and the Mridangist has truly become an asset to the concert. We all wish all of them such a grand and successful concert every time. We must also thank Shri Ramanatha Shastry for having arranged such a nice concert. amsharma

Dear brother-member, rajeshnat, You are damn correct dear. Samukhaana should be sung in Kokilavarali only, but not in Sindhukannada at all. I shall edit that post.
In general, I am always used to tell the elderly Violin-aspirants approaching me to learn violin that while the age increases day by day the concentrative power and persevering power decreases in multiplying speed. In the same manner, even in my case, as I have been aloof from the active-artist-life since last more than 15 years, my efficiency even in recognising the ragas is gradually diminishing while growing older day by day. But, this affects my writings also even if I do not and cannot mind to observe and in such case you brothers and sisters alone have to save me in which way you did now. Thanks a lot for correcting me.
As you wrote that OVK’s composition is Vighnaraajam Bhaje, now I could recollect.
Your assessment is correct and her voice is powerful like Smt. MLV. Very nice assessment. amsharma

In our music, elders never like to retire from the field in spite of any of their inefficiencies at that age. But, the Almighty blessed me with contentment and I was able to retire from the active-artist-life in 1998 and took the propagation of teaching methods as my mission. However, as I am somehow active even in this propagation even at this old age, today it reminded me in an incident that I cannot avoid this oldage affect. Yesterday I have attended the music concert of Chi. Sow. Patula Rama and, having felt happy about it, even though I am not used to do so, opened a new topic and wrote a report about it. While doing so, even though Rama sang Nannugannathalli-Sindhukannada-Adi, instead, I wrote that she sang Samukhaana-Sindhukannada-Adi. Then our brother-member, rajeshnat corrected me as Samukhaana-Kokilavarali-Adi and I have edited my post accordingly. Again when I rang up and spoke to Rama, to my surprise, she reminded me that she sang only Nannugannathalli-Sindhukannada-Adi but not Samukhaana-Kokilavarali-Adi at all. Now, again I have to re-edit the post accordingly. This is all of the OLDAGE-AFFECT. I feel very sorry for the inconvenience of the readers. amsharma.

There is no old age effect , looking at logically in terms of what had happened . You remembered the rAga correctly as sindukannada and you just slipped a little by saying that it was samukhaana instead of nannugannathalli. As such remembering the right rare rAga is more challenging than remembering the right rare krithi. Kudos and keep it coming.

In general, I am never used to write this kind of concert-report as I, at the first instance, am not fully satisfied with the alround performance of the artists and, at the second instance, am afraid of having a sharp tongue and sharper pen. After having listened to such a nice concert of Chi. Sow, Rama, I thought she must immediately be congratulated. But, I do not have her phone number. Then, at the first instance, having the cell number of the Mridangist, Chi. V. Venkataramana, dared to disturb him next day early in the morning around 7 am itself and profusely congratulated this young veteran Mridangist and got the cell number of Rama. Then I spoke to Rama and profusely congratulated her and her husband, Chi. M.S.N.Murthy and at last took her father’s phone number also and congratulated him heartily.
Behind this happiness another happier instance also is there. Chi. Sow. Rama is the daughter of my once disciple, Chi. Pantula Goapalarao, a very nice person. And, in respect of Chi. M.S.N.Murthy, the Violinist and Chi. V.Venkataramana, Mridangist, they are from very respectable and highly cultured Vidwat families and, incidentally, I was on the selection committee of All India Radio when they both appeared, stood firm in the critical interviews conducted by me and got selected for the post of Staff-artists nearly more than 15 years back. Having known from their childhood and as the well grown-up plants I have sown I must appreciate them then and there for their achievements. I did the same and got immensely satisfied.
This is my first experimental-report on our kids’ successfull performance and I am also thankful for all your kind appreciation. amsharma
