I once remeber a funny incident during flute Mali's concert at Odukkathur mutt , Bangalore sometime in the early sixties. In the middle of the concert a woman shouted "Mali chithappa, can you play on your flute how a child cries! The audience was in shell shock due to disbelief. Ofcourse myself and a few persons in the audience already knew about her to be a mad woman in the Ulsoor locality of Bangalore cantt. The great point was that Mali without the knowledge that it was the shout of a mad woman , promptly responded by playing on the flute for about full 3 minutes the exact replica`of the cry of a child to the utter amazement of the audience!
I cannot envisage a more unique and hilarious incident in a carnatic music concert.

yes, you have nicely brought out the paradox! To digress a little from the sublime realm of carnatic music, the mad woman referred above in Mali's concert somehow happened to be amongst a crowd of nearly 20,000 watching the Ranji Trophycricket final between Mysore and Bombay a year or so earlier at Gymkhana grounds,Bangalore. It was a small ground and inspite of all the best efforts of all the policemen at the ground, the crowd overflowed across the boundaryline interrupting the proceedings. Then from the crowd emerged this hefty woman brandishing a stick and she walked along the boundaryline, a threatening solitary figure , the crowd which was till then trespassing the boundary line promptly withdrew in a disciplined manner leaving all police officers stunned .The match then continued to proceed !

lakhs + me is the basic desire of everyone and that might be the reason for the name, lakhsmi - goddess of wealth.

i was talking to a famous singer, she said, "aNNA... we can rehearse on monday... i am going to cook for you... it will not be so great... anyway you are destined to eat it"
"no probs... even krishNa paramAthmA would have undergone such experiences with the nivEdhanam offered by many devotees, had plenty of "experiences" and had issued a circular that thuLasi and a spoon of water is enough for Him"

This is a music related 'kaDi' joke but invented on the fly for real....
While driving around, I was trying to keep the thala and always coming up a little short at the song ending. In frustration, I loudly remarked 'arai mAthrai koraiyardu'. The person next to me immediately quipped 'I wish I can help you but I left the pill splitter at home'!!

I sometimes do which worries me toocmlover wrote:OMG! You took your hands off the steering! I am worrried

But I do sense a reduced level of concentration while driving when focussing on laya whether keeping thalam or not, so it is definitely not advisable.
Half a mAthrai problem may turn into a life long mAthrai problem!!

That exercise may work in chennai where there is melodic accompaniment from all sides. If you miss a mAthrai some auto-driver is bound to leisurely quip:
'ennA naina arai mathrai maRanthu pooTTay; thaNNi aDichi keeRiya'
But while driving in NA missing by arai mathrai can mean an eternity
(By the by taking the wheel with you to the concert is a good idea! By that ,nobody can steal your car in the mean time

My AhAkAram to cml and yes, punarvasu, I have personally enjoyed music on wheels... I use to play on the side cover of my energy (kinetic!) because, posture is important for us. Lap-tap and knee taps change position of arms and fingers...
Music lives in all our travels in the form of discussions and enjoyment and it is true, music is on wheels and it unveils the pleasure of living!
vk-ji, let us sing gowLipanthu krithi for mA-thirai matters...

When your mridangam was not available, have you accompanied any artiste on unconventional equiments such as dinner table/dinner plate etc., If so let us know the episodes. it is like driving a vehicle without the steering wheel

This isn't hilarity in kutcheri, but I found it funny.
Part of his Australia tour Neyveli Santhanagopalan gavea demo on "Pinnal Swarams" which you can see in the link below.

Soon as the first set of swarams is over, he asks for a raga suggestion from the audience. Some one shouts Hamsadhwani when he had just finished singing it

I find him to be hilarious in all his talks (even the ones where he was on podhigai I think teaching songs).
Something similar though happened to me a few years ago. There was a concert at the Balaji temple. I was sitting next to one of the top shots of the temple. The artist sang a (reasonably well known) annamaya krithi and ended it. During the short pause before the start of the next song, the man quips to me "You know what? We should ask her to sing some annamayya songs"
