Is it going to be free next week. One song for each was a good idea to fill the gap. btw there were two bows kept near Adhira [ violinist ]. In my opinion Dwaram used to change bows while playing RTP. I raised this doubt few months back in this forum. Is there any specific reason for this.

Thanjavooranji, your post No.155
Mostly violinists playing the violin vigorously (with more azhutham),Will find that the rosin they apply to the hairs in the bow will fall of quikly. The presence of more rosin in the violin bow hair only will apply the due resistance to produce the sound when the bow is played over the strings.
The violinists who play with more azhutham have to apply the rosin frequently. To avoid stopping of playing in the middle of their performance, they keep one or two bows by their side in which required rosin has been applied so that they can take the spare one immediately and continue to play without interruptions when the playing bow has lost the rosin.
In addition to Sri Dwaram, Kunnakudi also keeps additional bow ready when he is giving a concert.

A (real) blackout at the DD studios postponed the shooting scheduled for yesterday (Monday) to the weekend! This week will probably be a repeat of the Mandolin Sisters episode - not sure though.

Nivedita,
Do share them with us. I really like the way the program is presented. I did watch a couple of segments when I was in India.Though I am not familiar with the quality of other programs, some of the talent shows I was asked to watch were too much hoopla and hype with little substance, it seemed...

After marriage, we can be sure Ram's gaze will not be focused on the Radel instrument - he will be looking for 'feedback' from the Mrs. in the audiencecoolkarni wrote:The grapevive has it that Ram was tense because he knew his fiancee and her entire family ,south of the Vindhyas, would be watching the program.
So he ended up focussing on the radel instrument , throughout.

I could watch yesterday's program. I am not sure whether it was a repeat or original
But it was good. "Whistle". A forbidden sound at many of our houses was ably demonstrated. Nivedita is asking right questions. Two different interviews to be right for an hour program (that too with no commercial breaks
). keep it up.

Thank you so much sir. I'm Charunyanath, the carnatic whistler whom you saw in the programme yesterday.vganesh wrote:I could watch yesterday's program. I somehow managed to catch a glimpse of that "whistle" episode........only about 5 minutes.....I badly wanted to see the re-telecast the next day but then there was some other program in place of it......anyway will try to view those youtube links
coming to yesterday's veenai program, i thought it was just fabulous......The way he explained the subtleties of playing the veena was really great. what I liked most about this episode was that it delved more into the technical aspects.......really good....keep it up

I watched yesterday's program(24-6-2009) of Suchitra on "KathaKalakshebham". It is nice to see somebody young has taken up this and delivering good. Two observations: Suchitra seems to be little uncomfortable while presenting and I felt it was a little fast. But definetely we can look forward for a great performer in the years to come. All the very best.
My personal advice is that let her learn Sanskrit also completely. It is very useful to quote Gita, Kalidasa etc. It will also be useful for picking up other Indian languages.

After many weeks I had a chance to watch this progm. The reply to Nivedita's question about the difference between the singing for bharatha natyam and a regular concert, Adhithya's reply was quite interesting. For a dance performance vocalist's manodharma is limited to an extent. Quite true. In earlier days Padmasubramaniam's team headed by Shyamala balakrishnan used to be very pleasing like a vocal concert. Since bhava of the artiste is more important the slow tempo of the vocalist is unescapable.

From what little I know of dance music (Ravi, please help me and correct me here)--it seems that a sweet voice is preferred, and I can understand why. Limiting her imagination on the dance stage helps the dancer in performing her bit smoothly (predictable singing to match her movements). The singer shows some of her imagination in rAgA sketches and in viruttam.
Tanjavooran,
Shymala Balakrishnan! One of those women who sang as sweetly as she did, but went unsung! Not only was she an asset to her sis-in-law Padma, she was a vocalist and a scholar of such fine quality. An outstanding woman in her caring and sharing and all that is good in a human being. ..

Much more than their individual skills, it was the sort of flammable chemistry that existed between Dr. Padma Subramanyam and Smt. Syamala Balakrishnan that used to light up the stage and set them apart, making their performances unique experiences.
The team work between the vocalist and the dancer has to be a very well-established one for any performance to be even reasonably good to begin with - a sort of HCF that is minimally necessary before it can be embellished to become a good/great one. I think, in an ideal world, the vocalist and the dancer should begin collaborating right from when the piece is conceptualized. They can both discuss their concept of developing the composition, with adequate opportunities for both the vocalist and the dancer to showcase their individual 'manOdharma'. In reality, I think what happens is that a composition is first choreographed by the dancer with a certain idea, which the vocalist is then expected to translate into reality - in effect, this means that vocalist is being 'told' what to do, and thus, he/she rightly feels that their 'manOdharma' is given short shrift.

Nivedita,
wonderful. Yesterday's progm was very nice. It was a novel experience to listen to cine music with conventional R,N,S and T. The performance by the students of Abaswaram school was good. The song selection in Hindolam and Lathangi were very pleasing . Wishes to the young budding artistes.

Nivedita,
The program was good. This needs lot of breath control. Nowadays this art is gainining popularity. Few years back a small girl Nivedita, disciple of suguna purushothaman performed at raga sudha hall. Presently competitions are being held in this whistling at Cleaveland and one young budding artiste Narayanan venkat bagged the prize for two consequetive years. However the performance by Thanjavoor S. Kalyana raman some 35 yrs back at Shastri hall was memorable. Charunyanath performance yesterday was fine. IMO gamakam was too much. Good luck Nivedita for your initiative.

Nivedita,
After seeing the few beginning segments of your programs on Podigai, I was impressed with the low-key but pleasant presentation of yours. I would catch a glimpse of several talent programs because someone recommended them. They disappointed me because of their 'hyper' nature (super-speed delivery and aggressive ads). It wasn't so with your Podigai programs. Hope the series continues so that I can see more of them when I come to India.

The interview featuring Aditya a fortnight back was very interesting. This boy gave matured replies, especially on the topic discussed singing for normal kutcheries and for dance.Aditya must have experienced this to give such replies.Even his song selection needs a special mention, pleasing javali in Behag to round off.
Wishing this youngster the Very Best in his academics and in his musical pursuit.

Re: DD Podhigai series on up-and-coming musicians
I watched the pudu punal program featuring mandolin last night. It was beautifully compeered. The violin accompaniment was great. (after little bit of googling) I guess the name of the violin artiste is K G Dilip.
I wish Podhigai announces the names of the artistes at least three or four times in a one hour program. May be after every break.
Incidentally was the program a repeat?

Thank you, kunthalavarali. The mandolin artist was Aravind Bhargav (disciple of Mandolin Shrinivas sir) and the violinist was K.J. Dileep (disciple of Shri MSG).
Your request to announce the names of the artists is valid, but in yesterday's telecast, the names were displayed at least thrice. The program was not a repeat; we recorded it about a month ago.

one thing is puzzling though.... without any sponsors/advertisers how do you manage to fund the episodes? are you charging the artists?

chalanata, Doordarshan sponsors the program. All artists, including me, are paid for every episode we record. Pudhuppunal has a wonderful producer and I'm glad we've been able to give young artists a prime-time slot on TV.

Re: DD Podhigai series on up-and-coming musicians
nivedita is right and as an artist who has featured in one of the episodes our group did get the payment. In fact DD is one of the few channels which pays for the performance respecting the artist and may be that is the reason the question is asked.
The Mandolin episode was good and can you pls tell me the name of the Kanjeera Artist in that Mandolin episode?

Nivedita,
Good to know your series is back. Hoping to catch one or two segments when I come to India. You are indeed good at presenting, and are a pleasant interviewer at that!

Hi I could watch the telecast of puduppunal repeat of Arvind Bhargav- Mandalin this thursday 10.30 pm Dammam time lucky to be on time after the beach house dinner , the time I always miss due to bahrain trips invariably delayed at Saudi Causeway. My special thanks for doing the repeat telecast of Arvind Bhargav deciple of Mandalin Srinivas. He is living up the promise of srinivas and very happy to see such talented are out at chennai and to the world through you which is an undisputed fact and all the rasigas of the world are indebted to you someway. Convey my best wishes to him and the team . I need to appreciate the other team members too and specially to Krishnapriya for her Ganjeera which is very rare sight to see.nivedita wrote:Thank you, kunthalavarali.
