Kurudi Venkannachar@subramanian's house (rasikas concert #17) on July 04th,2009
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vocal support by nandakumAr

Accompanied by violinlover and erode14 ;)

1. inta gAna - sunnOdhaviNodhini
2. maheshwara sudham sadAshrAmi(RS NS ) - nAttai - PD???
3. baagaayanayya (S)- chandrajyothi - T

4. mArga HindOla rAgapriyE - mArga hindOlam
5. nera nammiti neeve gati(R S) - vasantA??

6A. saptharishi vaNalithE sapthaswara virAdithE (R N S) - kalyAni
neraval in "prakrithi vikyadeeshwara samshEvithE"
6B.tani
7.sakala balagE neeNE srihari - janya of rAgavardhini (he said it is varamardhini???, did I hear it right not sure)
8. Om namO bhagavathE paNDuraNgAya shree vasudevAya (R S) -revathi
9. thillana -dheem tanana udana - kumudhakriya

kurudi venkannachar reminds of Mangalampalli BMK in the way he renders the krithis with thrust in keywords and also in terms of bringing a kind of a more devotional feel in his rendition . His start in sunnodhaviNodhini and nAttai were quite good .ThyagarajA's chandrajyothi had the right emote, the marga hindolam krithi that followed was a quick krithi .The next krithi nera nammiti neeve gati was the first rAga alApana not that detailed and had a ok round of swaras. 30 minutes was gone with the first five krithis , kind of got a feel that the renditions were bit light.

The main was in kalyAni, both the vocalists infact the other vocalist Shri nandakumar sang a more well rounded kalyAni, incidentally during many saNgathis kalyAni appeared as a pure hindustani concert . The Krithi was a kind of semi classical tune ,the neraval was detailed and was nice with a round of swaras kind of just good.

The first tukkada was in a janya of rAgavardhini and was just good .The pick of the day was the last revati, to an extent the krithi itself was like vedic chanting not something that you can compare with say mahadeva shiva sambho. The swaras were just good to very good , to a great extent I liked nandakumar's rendition of the alAPana. The last thillana was a jumble of words and had a poor finish.

I did not sit for the next exclusive OVK concert by kunjumani bhagavathar . Sri kunjumani bhAgavathar is a disciple of pApanAsam sivan and he spoke briefly about the concert. Thanks to subramanian , his new flat looks great , a brand new beginning from the days of the first concert of TV rAmprasadh.

I was thinking for the last one year or so that I will go with coolkarni for two generation of concerts as years roll by, the first generation just got over as we went full circle , the house is the first second generation rasika of rasikas concert. needs a break to rejuvenate and then continue with second full circle.

Overall just a good concert . There could have been more kuthcheri paddhati style in his renditions which was there and not there.

Violin lover played very good ,there was just very little oppurtunity for him to play as the concert itself was curtailed for 1 hours and 40 minutes and more importantly the krithi rendition style did not give him adequate returns to exhibit his skill.

Erode14 played very good and was very energetic with his usual trademark smile, incidentally in one of the posts he mentioned he will take me as his sishya so with a lot of maska chaska I went and shaked his hands , he did not recognize me till he asked me who I am . Also I thought he will baptize this poor soul and take me as his prime disciple, but no guru anugraham from nAgarAj. ;)

Dear Rajesh,

So nice to see you today... yes, keep all the maska chaska alive... I am always here to add more aska(sugar) to your musical journey and isn't true that prime had a good meaning before manmohan singh? :)

mail me your whereabouts and free times, let us really start...

meeting baradwaj, our nick and shri nageswaran was also very great...

the OVK session went well.

Subramanian has built a palace where his old house stood, and done so leaving a beautiful Neem tree standing in the front, for which much respect to him :)

His house has been inaugurated with fine music, it was a lovely evening. Now, at last, I can associate "Erode" with a real person, instead of just with a railway station!

My wife said that! See... just a few concerts, and already she bounds ahead in her grasp of the music!

:)

it was a nice occasion and I so wanted to be there. i was there just till kalyani started. :D

and yes, as i and srikant were commenting to each other, Sri Venkannachar is defly the BMK of Karnataka.

I cant resist telling. The first thing i noticed as i entered the street was that, the neem tree was still intact. and i am quite amazed at the home Sri Subramanian has made. It is fabulous. We are building a house and I am now kicking myself for not having thought about mordern designs and utilities to be included. I know that I sound jealous in say this, but then, i cant help being jealous.

subramanian sir, unga aathukku drushti suthi podungo.

rajesh, it was mEgaranjani before kalyANi. s r g m n s/s n m g r s.. janya of MMG. mArga hindOLa rAga priyE is a Dikshitar kriti.

Nick,
Erode and stations do go together. The train journeys and other modes of transport he undertakes to concert venues in remote parts of the country! How I wish you knew enough tamizh to enjoy his quick humor too, and read his poetry and prose.
Good to know that S is getting more interested in CM.

Our very best wishes to Subramanian and his family for a healthy and happy life in their new home!

Do you know why it rained yesterday , not at just the beginning when the artist was singing revati, it continued quite a bit because I did not eat any thing in shri subramaniam's house , that too I think there was kAsi halwa which I passed ;) . I was there for the whole concert .

Can anyone who stayed back for Kunjumani Bhagavathar's OVK concert write a few lines on it - at least the song list? Have heard him in late 50's and early 60's.
