Dear All
I heard the rendition of Dr.MLV on tyagaraja keerthanai "Manasa Mana saamarthyamemi" said to Vardini raga (from sangeethapriya.com). When I browsed the net for the aaroganam and avaroganam for this raga two different versions have been given.

vardhini S G2 M1 P D2 N3 S S N3 P D2 P M1 G2 S

The kalpanai swaram sung by Dr.MLV falls into Gowrimanohari janyam aarohanam and avarohanam.
1. Whether Vardhani and vardhini are one and the same?
2. Whether it belongs to 23rd melakartha as given in
http://www.geocities.com/vasudevanvrv/c ... aagams.htm
or belongs to 11th melakartha as given in
http://www.karnatik.com/ragasv.shtml#vardhani
3. Any recordings are there having detailed raga aalapani in this ragam

Thanks for starting the thread. I listen quite often to the MLV version that you talk about and it is a very bright and brisk one. For me, it is a (wakeup time + 1 hour) song to get me started on the day ( along with koniyade in kokiladhwani by Bombay Sisters ).
Sangeethapriya has various other versions of this song and they sound quite different.

The extant version of Vardhini is only the shADava form, SG2M1PD2N3S both to and fro.. As these notes are common to both GaurimanOhari and kOkilapriya; it doesn't matter which mELa you assign it to..
I suspect both names are the same..
It is very interesting; the DhrupadiyAs of the dAgar gharAna sing and play this raga..
