Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam
Melakkaveri Thiagarajan

Before Dr.Ganesh's concert Smt.Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam enthralled the audience both with her mellifluous voice which is capable of producing great subtlities and also with her vidwat. An admiring feature of her concert is her Kalapramana to suit the mood of the Raga as well as lyrics which makes the audience feel the composers handiwork with the lyrics. She doesnt hurry too much with too many kritis. She has made an excellent balance between song selections and suitable kalapramana for the chosen song. She also has a good blend of popular kritis vis-a-vis rare kritis. Being trained under Shri S.Rajam sir an authentic Koteeswara Iyer patantara can be looked forward to in her recitals and i relish those items very much.
The song list goes :
1) Varnam-Hamsadhwani-Adi
2) Gopalaka Pahimam-Revagupti-M.Chapu-Swati Thirunal
3) Nadupai Balikeru-Madhyamavati-Khanda Chapu-Tyagaraja
4) Hariharaputram-Vasanta-Khanda Ekam-Dikshitar
5) Sarasa Samadana-Kapinarayani-Adi-Thyagaraja
6) Janaki Pathe-Karaharapriya-Adi-P.Sivan
7) Saramaina Matalentho-Behag-Rupakam
8) Kandar Alankaram Virutham followed by Velum Mayilume -Sucharitra-Rupakam-Koteeswara Iyer
9) Bhajan
10) Thillana Brindavani
The highlight of the concert was of course Janaki pathe where she sang a very beautiful raga alapana with Niraval Swaram in Atheetha Eduppu "Saroruha Charana" (7 beats away from sama or 1 beat before samam). She sang beautiful passages of niraval and swaram coupled with a nice korvai. I played a thani for Atheetha Eduppu.
Sucharitra was the rare item chosen for the day's concert preceding it with Kandar Alankaram in virutham format.
She finished her concert with a soul stirring Bhajan and MBK's Tillana in Brindavani.
Melakkaveri Thyagarjan was as usual his best and provided suitable and apportioned accompaniment.

Wish someone else who attended the concert would write too, and say how well mridangam played the mridangam
Nandagopal missed this concert too, I think. Otherwise we would have heard about your playing.

hahah Arasi ji that is the reason why i have slowed down a bit in writing about ring side reviews. Whereas every other mridangists name and playing figures except mine since i have started writing the concert reviews. Anyway my intention of writing reviews is to give a new fillip to the art of writing and also i love to pen down my views on a certain item which many dont easily get. So i am happy in that aspect. i will wait till the time i am being reviewed about my playing.

Sri Babaji
The starting point of the song is Janaki Pathe which is samam. Whereas the Saroruhacharan starts at one beat before samam and hence it is called atheeta eduppu. Whichever starts before eduppu irrespective of the 3/4 or 1/4 or 1 etc .. it is called atheetham or atheeta eduppu. Whenever a song starts after samam it is called anAgata eduppu.
