Please post your favorite song that starts with g (I skipped F - if someone wants to start it for say hindi/urdu/english songs that is fine )
Try to limit your choice to one song if possible, or say up to 2-3 songs. If possible, please indicate why you like it (personal, analytical etc.). Please include raga, tala and composer info if you have it, and info on where people can listen to it - but watch out for commercial recording abuse!
The very simple lyric of MD rendered heartwarmingly by the Queen of Music in chenchuruTTi:
'GangE mAm pAhi'..
Add to that the MD's majestic
Gajaananayutam in chakravaakam rendered by SSI
- Gajananayutham Ganeshwaram - Vegavahini (Chakravakham) - Dikshitar. Love one rendition by Aishu Venkataraman, the violin prodigy.
- Giriraja Suta Tanaya - Bangala, Thyagaraja. Lovely composition. I like the version by "Remembering Shakti", the Indian-jazz fusion band, where Shankar Mahadevan sings this one.
gAna mUrtE GAnamUrti Adi TyAgarAja
gaja vadana bEDuve gowri tanaya hamsadvani (also nATa?) PD
gam gaNapatE hamsadhvani rUpakam HMB
gAna mazhai rAga mAlikA Adi Ambujam Krishna (tuned by VVS)
(Ravi, I like it better than guruvAyUrappan!)
1) Garuda Gamana Ra Ra-Mayamalavagowla ( I Love both BMK's as well as O.S.Aruns from 2007 Margazhi Utsavam - Very Very nice). This is my 10 month old daughter's favorite song now. Also, this song brings out a different facet of the mayamalavagowla raga I think. as compared to it's usual solemn sanctious appeal.
2)Gandhamu Poyyaruga - My all time favorite in the mesmerising punnagavarali. Again by BMK , But I also like it in a telugu movie in which a female is singing(Sorry do not know the name of movie or artist).
3)Cannot be without mentioning MSS'S Fluid captivating mohanam - Giridhara Gopala

Gadjavadana- Thodi. This is a beautiful kriti which does great justice to the majestic thodi. Brilliant chittaiswaram as well, definitely a favourite of mine.
Gitarthamu - Surati. KVN or Nenduruni Krishnmoorthy's versions. I like the sowkhyam effect of this krithis. Kalpana swarams at the pallavy add a certain charm. Would have loved to see tmk sing it at cleveland.
Guruleka etuvanti - Gowri Manohari - This song brings out a strong passion i cannot describe...its very emotive (for me anyway).
>I like the version by "Remembering Shakti", the Indian-jazz fusion band, where Shankar Mahadevan sings this one.
There is a video of this performance on youtube, I think. I could not help think about the contrast between the glitz, pomp and circumstances of that and the humble house where thyagaraja composed and sang this song.
A nice song and it has a special place in my heart since that is the first krithi I learnt. Not simple by any means. Some of the sangathis require some skill.
Giripai nelakonna
Gandhamu puyyaruga (BMK Version is lovely but also the one mentioned by Vallaki - the film is Subhodayam sung by Susheela & SPB)
Geetarthamu - played by ESS on Veena
gajavadana sammOdita (SSI, TMK) and giripai (MDR... does anyone have BVR/BVL's rendition? I've heard that is great too; instrumentalists MSG and TNK play it very well too). gOvardhana giridhAra is also a lovely piece (especially NSG singing it after shAntAkAram bhujagashayanam, and also Mysore brothers). gItArtamu by almost anybody is nice as well, as is gajAnanayutam.
I agree Ravi... gangai karai thOttam.. There was a discussion about what raga that song was, I do not recall if there was any firm conclusions on that.
Long version
--------------
giripai - sahAna - MDR
gOpAlaka pAhimAm - rEvagupti ( KVN , MC on violin)
ganapathE suguNanidhE - janaranjani
gajAnana yanuchusadA - thODi ( malladi bros)
short version
--------------
gAnamUrtE - ganamUrti ( TNS , Sanjay)
garuDa gamana - nagasurAvali
gAyati vanamAli - durgA
gOvardhana giridhAra - darbari kAnaDa
Is this the garuda gamana ramadasa krithi? There is also a hindolam annamacharya one. If it is the ramadasa krithi, I thought it was mayamalava gowla. I have not heard of the nagasuravali raga.
Can you please clarify?
My choices in G mostly seem to be all 'light' ones - may be some of these have scope for elaborate singing.
GangadeeSwaram Sankaram - Sindhubhairavi - Surajananda? - I just love DKJ's version of it
Govardhana GirISam - Hindolam
Govardhana GiridhAra - the darabAri kAnaDA version - preferably by NSG, our vidyaarthi.

Nice cienu!
You are in my league for according top honours to
Gange maam paahi
I simply can never forget the melody of this simple lyric rendered by MS so elegantly....
Someone mentioned kOTISvaraiyer's gANAmuda pAnam. When kalyANi, kAmbhOji and bhairavi reigned, it was fun to have a change and hear a jyOtisvarUpiNi once in a blue moon. Of course, I hear it in MMI's voice when I think of the old concerts.
A sparkling song both in words and in musical structure.
I could not listen to this song on this site.
I once heard it on hummaa by Nityashri but cannot locate it now. May be I will just play it give a link here.
Ghana Naya Desika - Rishabhapriya - Koteeswara Iyer, rendered by the incomparable S Balachander don't have a link, but he did play it for a radio broadcast
Geethaardhamu - Surati - Tyagaraja - rendered by the maestro Emani Sankara Sastri - available on one of the few commercial CDs of Emani of the same name
Giripai nela konna - Sahana - Tyagaraja- rendered by Mali - pure magic! here is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/file/mty3ihliz ... Sahana.mp3
