Sumitra gave a nice performance for Charsur. The songs sung were
1 Sami Nenarunchi + Varnam + Karaharapriya( Composer??)
2.meru samaana + Mayamalavagoulai + Desadi. The neraval and swarams were apt and elevated the concert.
3. The short alapana of mohanam was brilliant. Kadambari priyayai of Dikshitar in tisra triputa is relatively less heard nowadays. the neraval on Madurya vak prada nipunayai and swarams followed.
while singing the neraval one has to keep in mind the full meaning and not end at 'Vak".
4. Arunachalnatham + saranga in tisra Ekam - a Panchalinga krithi of Dikshitar. It was rendered faster than usual. That would have shown the essence of saaranga better.
5. Mukhari alapana was excellent. kriti Enraikkum sivakrupai of neelakanta sivan, in Misra chapu. Saraswati Ram, granddaughter of Sri Neelakanta sivan says that it has to start from anupallavi as per Sivan.
6. Seethamma maayamma + Lalitha + rupakam + Thyagaraja. Usually this is sung nowadays in Vasantha ragam. But she chose to go her Gurus way tosing it in Lalitha( two versions like manasuloni)
7. Alapana kambhoji. The alapana started from tarasthayi and finished at mantharasthayi. It was pleasing and very appealing. she chose the Kamalamba Navavarna kriti in Kambhoji set to Ata tala of Sri Dikshitar. The neraval at " sakala soubhagyadayaka ambhoja charanayai followed by Kalpana swaram and Thani'.

Can anyone just clarify whether neraval is done with Navavarnam by any stalwarts????

8. Yaamihe + ahiri + ashtapadi of Jayadeva.
9. thullumatha + Thiruppugazh in Hamsanandi
10. Mangalam

Kum Amrutha Murali (Violin), Sri B Sivaraman(Mridangam) and A Murali (Ghatam) gave a wonderful support and made the concert a memorable one.

Good teamwork and best wishes to all of them for a bright future.

Also kudos to Charsur Arts foundations for identifying young talent and promoting them

I've heard Sri Vijay Siva sing niraval for the SankarAbharaNam and bhairavi navAvaraNams. Smt. Sumithra has, in an earlier concert, also sung niraval for the bhairavi piece . Niraval is commonly sung for the kalyANi also...

My son' Vasanth's guru, Late Sri T. Viswanathan, taught him neraval in the navavarana dhyana kriti kamalAmbike in todi. Viswa sir did neraval on the line
"viyadAdibhUtakiraNe vinOdacaraNe aruNe"
He also did kalapana svarams for this line.
Vasanth in his student recital in wesleyan sang this with neraval and svaram followed by tani by Sri Ramnad Raghavan.

How could I forget the tODi piece? Thanks, cmvenkat! Another place for niraval here which I enjoy singing personally is 'kamalAlaya tIrtha vaibhavE shivE karuNArNavE'. This krithi has several niraval opportunities 'sakala lOka nAyikE sangIta rasikE' and even, perhaps [except for the 'How dare you sing niraval in the madhyamakala passage' crowd :-)], 'sakalE guruguhakaraNE, sadAshivAntahkaraNE'?

True, the tODi navAvarana krti is replete with neraval-able lines, one could sing neraval for the whole krti making it a one song concert..!

su-kavitva pradAyike! and vikalEbara-mukti-dAna-nipuNE! - the sahityam of this song has a lyrical sweetness that is independent of it's meaning..

And the how-dare-you-sing-neraval-at-madhyamakala-passage party should be made to listen to a few hours of prof.S.Ramanathan's exposition of 'kAkutstHam dhImantam kamalAkSham srImantam' from the vasanta piece or 'dakShiNa-kAsI-puram daNDita-kAmatripuram!' from the kedaragaula song of Dikshitar..

Yes Prashant, I would defintely enjoy a neraval here; my mind goes back to the banks of the kamalAlayam, and the grandeur of the gopuravAsal when seen from there(paDiththurai); If there is a time machine which will transport me to those days, I would jump into it.

Sumitra is a singer par excellance and she carries so much vidwat and musicality much beyond her age !!! Definitely a top notch youngster!!

As for Mr.Chandar's query : has any stalwart done neraval for navavarnam?

Do hear T N S - a recording of the navavarnam Kamalam baam bhajare in Kalyani , at the the line "Kamalaam baam bhajare re chitta", for a mind blowing neraval.
This is an exquisite masterpiece rendition , distributed by Carnatica.com, TNS accompanied by S D Sridhar and C S Murugabhoopathy

TNS has left no nook and corner unexplored in this as far as the ragam, neraval ,song or swaram.

Again last year I heard him sing this for Brahma Gana Sabha, where he presented a full exploratory neraval for the same song at " Nitya Kalyani Katyayani"

I am sorry that I was not in Chennai for this concert.

She has won me as her fan with her support contributions to her guru's concerts, and I have been looking forward to hearing a full concert from her.

Srinivas,
You are in Chennai. Call Charsur and ask them. They are courteous at the desk and will answer your question. It is my experience with them, anyway.
