Yet another tragedy. I read in news paper this morning that she is recovering, just in couple of hours, a bad news

DKP and now Gangubai!
She is with her daughter Krishna now and they will make music together again. Gangubai was the architect of her own destiny in the face of adversity every step of the way. Salutations to two exemplary women in music who left this earth one after the other in quick succession...

Another demise making the music world poorer.
But I sincerely pray to all those in the heavens to bless all the current and future musicians to give them strength, knowledge and health for them to continue our music tradition in best ways possible so that we rasikas can all enjoy and pass it on to the next generation !

Very nice pictures of her. The one with her standing alongside the tanpurA is one of a kind, at least for me. Are there any photographs taken of other musicians this way?

Human life span is about a hundred years. Leaving the mortal coil is an inevitable thing whether it be our near and dear ones or the great men and women who come to live among us. We all have to leave sometime. We wish that they all stay on. The wonderful thing about the great musicians is that their music is there for the world to cherish for ever. That is why I wonder when people exclaim 'untimely death' when one has reached a ripe age. If they are still singing and are not bed-ridden, it is a different thing. Then, a hundred or more years are wished upon them.
By the way, they do not leave without an address

or owe us debts. Instead, they leave riches behind! I am listening to a treasure of a song now, and there is not enough of a lifetime left for me to enjoy all such bounty I have received from them!

It seems Gangubai's mother Ambabai, was a carnatic musician. I didn't realize she was 97 when she passed away. Beautiful pictures in those links!

I'm thoroughly enjoying this concert, and the vocal accompanist sings some lovely sequences too around the 36 minute mark. I'm not generally a fan of the harmonium but he lends admirable support in this concert. Question about the raga--any specifics about its structure? At places, it sounds like darbAri kAnaDa, and sometimes sindhu bhairavi. It's very nice.

Gangubai Hangal was born to Sri. Chikkarau Nadiger and Smt. Ambabai of Dharwad in 1913. Even as a young girl, she listened avidly to classical Hindustani music on gramaphone records that were available in her neighbourhood and set her heart on mastering the art. Incidentally, her grandmother Kamalabai and her own mother Ambabai were both proficient in Carnatic music! Hers was, however, an indomitable spirit: to this end, Gangubai trained under Pt. Krishnacharya Hulguru, and Pt. Dattopant Desai before her tutelage under Sawai Gandharv, a famed disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khansahib of the Kirana gharana. By sheer dint of hard work and dedication Gangubai rose to the front ranks of her chosen profession. In a performing career spanning 75 years, the doyenne was decorated with numerous awards and accolades; the Karnataka Sangeet Nritya Academy Award (1962), Padma Bhushan (1971), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1973) and Padma Vibhushan (2002) being among the most prominent. She has also served as honorary professor of music at the Karnataka University of Dharwad.

2nd, I remember these days the demise

of beloved Gangubai, 21st July 2009 to be exactely...

I have some nice music and listening these days her beautiful renderings of Khayals. But I miss heavily one CD (see posting of 'Kanti Dattani' in Sept 2008 http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... 22&p=91832 ).

I have not found this album "India: The Voice of Tradition. Vocal Music from North India" of 1991 anywhere...

Not in any of the leading online eMusic stores. Same not on the German website of the original publisher (label Wergo - http://www.wergo.de/shop/en_UK/ ). And I do not understand Polish to follow here: http://www.amazonka.pl/india-the-voice- ... 3725.bhtml |(

Does anybody has this album available for download ????? - I suppose it is sold out. Would be great to find it soon on Mediafire etc. ...
