Vid Unnikrishnan - vocal
Vidushi Akkarai Subbulakshmi - violin
Vid Patri Satish kumar - mridangam
vid A S N Swamy - kanjira

Venue - Unnati center, Sri Guruvayurappan Bhajana sabha - gokulakshtami series.

1. sarasuda - saveri varnam - kottavasal venkatarama iyer (brief alapana)
2. jaya jaya swamin - nattai - narayana thirtha (swara @ jaya jaya)
3. pankajaksha - todi - swathi thirunaal (neraval & swara @ padmanabha pahi pahi)
4. parama pavana - ranjani - meesu krishna iyer (alapana, swaras @ parama pavana)
5. upacharamu -bhairavi - thyagaraja (alapana, neraval & swara @ kapata nataka)
....

I left when bhairavi swaras started. I wanted to hear Unnikrishnan, as i haven't heard for long time. He started the concert on good note, it picked up well from todi piece. Ranjani & bhairavi were sung well. Ranjani composition of meesu krishna iyer was new for me. Bhairavi alapana was for about 20 minutes, and alapana was classical. Brigas were limited and focus was on time and tested sangathis. Akkarai's violin return was the best for me. I also liked the neraval - it was well built up sangathi after sangathi.

The concert was well attended. The organizers were "pushing" audience to front! and this was kind of disturbing the mood for listening. Also audience applause - when unnikrishnan held on a note for more than few seconds, and when he touched tara stayi madhyamam in bhairavi neraval!! It was spontaneous(;-

Ok, here are the rest..

06 vishwEshwar darshan kar - sindhu bhairavi - Swati Thirunal ( O )

07 viruttam ( pachai mAmalai pOl ) -

ODODi vandEn kanna - dharmavathi - Ambujam Krishna

08 kAkai chirakinile - brindavana sarang - Subramanya Bharati

09 eppaDi pADinArO - AbhEri ( karNataka dEvagAndhAri) - Sudhananda Bharati

10 mAnasa sanchararE - SAma - Sadashiva Brahmendra ( O )

11 kuNidAnO krishna - hamsAnandi - Purandara Dasa ??

12 thillAna - chandrajyOthi ?? - ??

13 vijaya gOpAla tE ( mangaLam) - surutti - Narayana Theertha

As Hari said, the concert was good. Ranjani alapana and the krithi and neraval of Bhairavi were very good. Patri Satishkumar was outstanding through out the concert and in his turn during tani avartanam.

Ramesh Swami's tani avartanam was for 25 minutes , eating away the possible RTP time. ( no offense meant !)

Hari : There are two bhairavi krithis starting upachAramu. He sang the 'upachAramulanu' ...

Need some help with the thillAna... the charanam starts with 'sashivadana bhAgAyanayya..' .. whose kriti is this ??

Missed to add..

The thODi krithi is 'pankajAkshanAm ramESan'... an 'utsavaprabandha' kriti of Swati Thirunal ( it was not the pankajAksha tava' , which is usually heard) with neraval at ' padmanAbha pAhi pAhi ennu lOka sanchayam'.

this is a song about the poet savant sadAsiva brahmendra, and was a staple in sri VolETi VenkatEswarulu's concerts; as was the paras 'AdEnammA' (mentioned in the raga identification #6 ? thread..)

Needless to say, he used to sing both brilliantly...

does all compositions of meesu krishna iyer are on sadasiva brahmendra? This ranjani composition is about the saint, and also i have heard Jaganmohini keerthana - dayapayonidhe composed by meesu krishna iyer, it also contains saint's name. I will look for voleti's recording of this song.

'Meesu Krishna Iyer - being an ardent devotee of Sadasiva Brahmendra (his Guru)
wrote songs on him. His Guru Bhakti (devotion towards teacher) stands out prominently in all his lyrics.
He has composed songs on Sadasiva Brahmendral, Lord Muruga, Siva and Ambal. All his songs were given to his close friend, Alathur Venkatesa Iyer, to be tuned. His songs `Dhayapayonidhe' in Jaganmohini and `Parama Pavana' in Ranjani, both incidentally on Sadasiva Brahmendral, are famous kirtanas sung in concerts.'

hari- this is what I gather from some sites.. Hope its helpful..

How is the commuting facility there now. I found the roads are better.
Are there frequent BMTC buses to get out of this isolated area. I used to take
an 830pm bus which means I have to miss RTP always.

The roads are better, no more bumpy roads. I don't know about commuting as i go by car. I guess, next year commute problem might be solved due to Namma Metro);-

RajeeV I guess you are in Mumbai.Unnikrishnan is singing on 15th August in Fine arts for 4 hours.

However going by his devotional songs performance on 21/7 in fine arts for a private company ,he should really work very hard.

It appeared he was not prepared ( flipping pages after every song, talking to assitant after every song) poor accompaniments.Even Kurai ondrum illai was un inspiring. Worst the 7 pm show started at 7 40 pm.

thanks saravanan .. Yeah I agree with your evaluation. I was not terribly impressed last time I heard him. However I think he has improved remarkably from what I hear from trusted sources. Even Sruti in its december called his perfomance and a charukesi main as the performance of the season. So looking forward to hear him sing..
lets see...

True. There is an outstanding ranjini raga alapana with Lalgudi and Karaikudi Mani
