Nisha rAjagOpAlan@IFA(RKM School) on july 25th,2009
-----------------------------------------------

This concert was conducted as part of Shri GNB centenary celebrations jointly by Mudhra and Indian Fine Arts (IFA). The concert was advertised for just 90 minutes, as there was a thematic talk on Shri GNB and then followed by Sriram gangAdharan's concert. Nisha was accompanied by L rAmakrishnan - violin, Trivandrum balaji - mridangam and Hari hara sharma - ghatam

I was late and missed the following 3 numbers, as per the chit by another elderly rasika:

1. needaya rAdA (varnam) -AndhOlikA - GNB
2. telisirAma - poornachandrika - T
3. kavalai eLLam - saraswathi - GNB

The vidushi who has got cultural roots in canada ;) and as I entered she sang KAnadA. The kAnadA is a very easy to rAga to create a positive Excellence Override (PEO), but nisha presented a well rounded krithi which I am assuming is from GNB. I liked the KanadA swaras, there was quite a few patterns which was on spot manodharamam , absolutely no overlap with any of the KAnadA masters like GNB and MMI etal. The next was vasantA kalanda lalitha ,oops it was lalitha panchamam and that was a fast filler.

4. nee allAl ini yArennai kArppAr(R S) - kAnadA - GNB?
6 mins alApanai, 4 mins violin return and 3 mins swaras.
5. parama purusham hridaya - lalitapanchamam - ST

Having sung 5 krithis , to take a very big super XL sized KAMBODHI krithi as a main in a 90 minute concert had its share of plus and minus . The MD krithi just takes little more time for any one to express it. She had to rush a little fast and not do ample justice to both the neraval and swaras, but overall there was a charge in her rendition and the swaras were crisp.

6A. shree subramanyAyA namasTE(R N S T) - kAmbOdhi - MD
neraval in "vAsavathi sakala deva vaNdithya varenyAya"
10 mins alApanai, 7 mins violin return , 5 mins neraval and 4 mins swaram
6B. tani for 4 mins

TukkadAs of GNB are always super mega hits. Nisha kept up the tempo and both were rendered excellently keeping up the fast pace in kApi and going little slow in kalyAni . I just love this GNB kalyAni tukkadA.

7. rAdha mukha kamala - kApi - GNB??
8. kaNNaNE eN kaNavan - kalyAni - GNB?

The violinist bowed beautifully in KanAda but for the kAmbOdhi there was quite a few sangathi squeaks , also his proportion in main was very l o n g. The mridangist use of left was very good , but overall I could not much hear the mridanga nAdham. The young boy must be not more than 12th standard played with quite a lot of enthusiasm, his firm taps in both kApi and KAmbOdhi was excellent. Nice to see an upcoming ghatam vidwan , one usually sees more of kanjira vidwans in that upa Pakkavadhyam sub junior bracket. balAji did not take the tani from chennai to trivandrum , he stopped half way at his guru's feat at pAlakkAd . ;)

Overall nisha has definitely improved by leaps and bounds , last time I heard her was about 3 or 4 years . She is charging with lot of energy, possibly if she gets more voice weight like few of her contemporaries she will be much more comprehensive and complete. She certainly gave almost a well rounded 90 minute concert , though kAmBodhi was slightly over ambitious. Overall a very good concert.

Rajeshnat,

Please give names of the accompaniment if you know. From your sentence structure, I thought the young 12th grader was the mridangist. The Pallakkad reference made it seem it was Balaji on the mridangam. Please clarify

Appu, Trivandrum Balaji was the mrudangist (Rajesh has listed them in the first paragraph before the songlist).

Now that you are back, can you confirm the composers, in another thread gbr has listed the kalyAni as bharathiyAr composition , but kApi is unknown yet.
