The occassion was the release of swarna venkatesa deekshitar kriti notations book by grand son of venkatesa deekshitar. The concert was advertised from 7pm. went at 07:15 pm , there were 10 dignataries in the dias (PSN and others).
There were three dikshitar's I think all of them are related or a sishya parampara of VV Swarna Venkatesha Dikshitar.They talked and talked , with IFA secy Srinivasan adding few words, then vote of thanks , then thanks to vote of thanks.In addition two of them from the audience also walked up and talked .The compere announced 3 times that OST will be joined by mullaivasal chandramouli in violin , s. thiagrajan - mridangam and shankar in kanjirA.
In short a select group of 30 deekshitar family and relatives from chidambaram were having a good family function.
The 80 or so in the audience were perplexed. OST also came and talked and said that he knows only 2 compositions of deekshitar and recalled KVN's rendition in NGS and said he will sing "swarna kalA bhairavam".He also put a disclaimer that today he is forced to sing by referring notes the remaining in the concert.
The concert started at 08:15 pm, there was one atAna composition with a brief alApanai with OST referring the notes completely. Then he sang what he told that he already knew , that was kalyAni R N S T , when the tani started it was 08:55 pm. About 20 of them walked out, I walked out at the middle of tani.
OVerall I felt I should have not gone to this less than mediocre concert(speech + concert), though the concert was just good.

Its REFRESHING to read honest reviews frankly stated.......I was fortunate to be in the company of S.V.D, SEM & K.V.N when they were going to his exposition of his compositions in Vani Mahal some years back. It was am unforgettable occasion& experience as he explained his compositions. NOTHING LIKE A COMPOSER explaining his thought processes etc. Incidentally K.V.N. made a cassette to raise money for Visiri Swamigal & the whole cassette consists of Dhikshitar's compositions. Absolutely FANTASTIC! In another thread you had talked about sunset phase of SEM, Santhanam & K.V.N. etc. I find myself that the VARIOUS STAGES of their careers show enormous PROFOUNDITY & MATURITY. They have been able to eschew the unwanted & unnecessary & present the essence like BACH whose final works appear very simple- pieces for unaccompanied Violin etc- but are VERY PROFOUND! In the case of Santhanam he was taken away before we found out his ultimate altitude! its very sad........VKV

About the kalyAni krithi:
2. swarna kalA bhairavam(R N S T) - kalyAni - swarna venkatesa dikshitar
The alApana was sung beautifully for about 9 minutes, the violin return for 4 mins. THe neraval was in the lines "varna jhwalA jAdhadharam..." for 7 mins and swaras for 8 mins. kalyAni is a rAga where the krithi that is being taken gives me two opposite experiences .This no is on the positive note in the zone of two of my famous kalyAni krithi vasudevayani and kamalAmbAm bhajare.
This particular krithi does have the MD gopucha(tail) like saNgathis. kalA bhairavam - bhairavam- ravam- vam.
