Sowmya gave a spellbinding performance for Classfest accompanied by Embar Kannan and Manoj Siva. If Pirsig is still searching for his grand unification theory, he should have just visited IIT last night!

Song list:

1. Nera nammiti (varnam), Kaanada, Ata
2. Siva loka nathanai, Mayamalavagowlai, Rupakam, GKB
neraval and swaras at arpa sugathai ninaidhom aRanthiruvadi marandhom
3. Husseini, Vinata Sutha ra ra, Rupakam, Thyagaraja [S]
4. Intha Prabhuvaa Kaneno, Mohanam, Adi
5. Vasanthabhairavi, Nee daya radha, Rupakam, Thyaga
6. Sriramam Ravikulaabdhi somam, Narayanagowla, Deekshitar
7. Kambodhi, O Rangasayee, Adi, Thyaga [NS at Bhooloka vaikuntam]
8. Thani
9. Sedhi solla vandhom, Dvijavanthi, Adi, GKB
10. Smara Sundarangani, Paras, Adi,
11. Ninnaye rathi endru, Sindhubhairavi, Bharathiyaar

Observations:

1. The concert was loaded with excitement and embelishment. Every song was presented in both a classical and fresh manner. The accompanists provided outstanding support and utilized all the opportunities to demonstrate their rich talent.

2. Husseini and Vasanthabhairavi expositions were par excellence. Have never heard the latter dealt with in such detail and it truly proved to be the show stealer.

2. Narayanagowlai was both lilting and classical with full justice done to the lyrics.

4. Kambodhi raga alapana was leisurely and grand. Would have loved to hear a less common place kriti but it appears that most senior artits are quite conservative about this. Sowmya had momentary trouble with throat dryness at the tara sthayi sancharas.

5. Manoj Siva presented a nice thani and the sound level was just perfect to enjoy the mridangam.

Looks like it has been a cracker of a concert..

1. one of the grandest varNa-s.. and it particularly dazzles when sung with good emphases and jaru-s as required; which is something Sowmya is terribly good at..

2.VinatAsuta - that lovely song from the Prahlada bhakti vijayam opera, (which I am sure she inherited from the Maestro Dr.SR..) AND swarakalpana in husEni.. very good..

3. Intha prabhuva kANenO - a very old, original mettu in mOhanam, which has survived in the oral tradition.. It is testimony to the poetic and musical genius of the dasa-s.. also it has multiple-kAla sAhitya..which make it a very energetic song..

Did she sing the M2 phrase in SmarasundarAnguni..?

Belonging to the Muktha school, am sure she would have. Whoever I've heard from the B-M school (Smt Rama Ravi and so on) sing the Prathi Madhyamam in the Paras Javali.

It was a great concert. The elaborations of husEni and vasanta bhairavi were very creative and filled with rAga bhAvam. The choice of kritis and ragams was very nice and made it a very good concert. The kriti renditions were quite impressive and the manodarmam parts were all very good. The main kambhOji was pretty exhaustive and made it a very pleasent experience to listen to. The popular number was rendered with appropriate neraval and svarams. All the songs were well rendered. The accompanists did a very good job in playing for the songs and their solo versions.
