Was a good concert delivered in the usual Vijay Siva fashion. The Gamanashrama Alapanai was sung very well and sans ambiguity. Right from the start, the distinction from Purvikalyani was marked. The Anandabhairavi Krithi had a fine round of Swarams. Personally, the pick of the concert to me was the Paras Krithi rendition and Swarams, together with the Sankarabharanam Neraval. Post main, Bhaja Re Re Manasa was very energetically rendered followed by a sedate and calming Punnagavarali. Had to leave after the Behag piece.

IIT M is one of the best concert halls , the ambience of blue coloured chairs ,ac kept just right and most importantly the CLT hall has the best slope , whereever you sit you can look down(though the artist there should be only looked up for their music) and still see all the artists in the stage, direct eye contact with artists helps me as I am not eye closing rasika.

I went around 06:25pm, just went to coffeeday to have a bite , the waiter was courteaous and promised me to get my sandwich in 5 minutes time , I did know if there is more courtesy there is more delay,it touched 06:45 and I decided to skip coffee, missing coffee before vijay siva's concert is not a big miss.

Gajendra circle in IIT is a spot where you have to go straight or turn left depending on what route you came(2 routes one thru vana vani and the other not thru vana vani school) ,but I forgot which route I came because of the sandwich and went the wrong side ,expected CLT somewhere within 200 metres, drived drived and drived upto the other end of IIT (where else in madras you get this kind of place), turned back and spotted a deer.

Then took the right turn to reach CLT. Dear hamsadhwani was gone with the deer and as I entered vijay Siva started with a controlled aggression of more dearer ananda bhairavi , the song was rendered in a very good fashion. The unadulterated classicism continued with gamanashrama , he was specific in telling all that I am singing only gamanashrama , though me being a rasika only , I am more familiar with the adulterated poorvikalyAni ;)

As sathej said before the pick of the day was indeed pharas, I am with him there. Vijay siva and his school are I would say the most performing in the zone of MMGowlai (melakartha 15). I was thinking for few minutes if it was lalitha , then took a little more time to assert myself that it was pharas, who sings alApana in this rAgA. pharas was no farce with the right thrust and no extra aggression, though there is one more rare pharas alApana of TRS with superb aggression.

Vijay does have a problem reaching comfortably the higher octaves, his voice lets him down ,and to an extent there was a dip in quality in suddasAveri .Also the dhanyAsi was not his usual best. Again the consistency of vijay took over , he got that exact sedate punch of shankarabharanam and the alApana was excellent . Though the krithi rendition was not that veryimmaculate (is it because I am comparing with MS subhalakshmi), from the nerval and swaras it was excellence again, there is a very controlled aggression and he always stayed away from kAmbOdhi .

Every tukkada had the right dose of classicism , I liked both the rAgamAliga slokham. Vijayashiva always shows attention to his diction and language cover , there was a brief pause and he sang two consecutive thamizh numbers .If aruna sayeeram has mAdumaikkum kannE , vijayashiva has his own kudumbai siddhar folkish shenjuruTTi, both has a share of intense pro-gallery(I love any musician who atleast sings one number to an exclusive gallery, that way they will make majority of rasikas come back).

Few Short comings:
-----------------

1. I would have preferred amritha murali to have had a little more azhuttam from violin , at times it was bit too light.

2. Vijayashiva had two towering tamburas behind him, somewhere before the neraval of the main, he did a bit of kit kat break where he took one of the tamburas and did little more tuning. To an extent I lost the muse of shankarabharanam, I felt it was little excess correction which vijay could have skipped.

3. The play of manoj was very good for most of the songs but little more strokes would have been better.

All said and done ,vijay siva and his concert was excellent for 2 and 1/2 hours.

Yes, having been used to hearing paras as a tukkadA, I was surprised to see its svarUPam when Vijay Siva handled it.

There is no doubt that Vijay Siva is a vallavan, but paras is no pul. :)

sounds like a great concert.
Paras and Gamanasharma krithis... Is this sung more in DKP school of music.
I wonder why he is hardly invited at Bangalore.

It was a great concert. The pieces were all rendered with a lot of bhavam and with perfect diction. The choice of songs and rAgam was very nice and quite out of the box. The choice of gamanAshrama and paras for elaboration was very good and they were both done extensively. It was great to hear these two rare ragams. The main course, shankarAbaraNam was wonderful. It was just majestic and was only getting better with the kriti and neraval and svarams. The neraval svarams were all very good. The accomanpanists were very good and played their parts very well. It was a superb concert.
