Under the banner of Sangeethapriya this concert was arranged at Raga Sudha Hall today. They were accompanied by Shri Ganapathiraman on the mirdangam and Shri Gopalakrishnan on the kanjira. The concert started with the Nattai krithi Mahaganapathim, followed by Sudhamayee in Amrithavarshini,Pakalanilabadi in Karaharapriya ,elaboration of the ragas Panthuvarali and Puryadhanashree, followed by the expansion of a solfa phrase to a set beat and increasing the tempo of the beats with intricate rhythmic patterns ending in a crescendo. This was followed by Venkatachala Nilayam in SindhuBhairavi, and Vandenmataram in Desh. The highlighs of the concert were a)Elaboration of the karaharapriya raga alternately by both the artists, playing of the krithi and a maze of swara patterns. Both the artists played brilliantly.b)A short and a vibrant thani by the percussion artists.c)A divine experience listening to the playing of the ragas Panthuvarali and Puryadhanashree.d)Lilting raga elaboration of Sindhy Bhairavi and Desh and playing of the krithis that followed e)Brilliant mirdangamm playing and adaption to the Carnatic and Hindustani version by Shri Ganapathiraman f))The rendition of the first two krithis and a lilting short Amrithivarshini raga alapana by Dr.Narmadha.It was heartening to see MSG Sir and his wife along with their grand daughter enjoy the music along with the audience. A divine experience for the large audience. Thanks Sangeethapriya and their local Moderators and the artists of the day for this wonderful experience. I am informed the audio and video uploads will be available for downloads in the featured concerts of sangeethamshare.org web site in a couple of days. Ragjay

It was indeed a great experience and thanks to a wonderful sum up / review by Ragjay. The venue was almost full and it really shows that if quality concerts are organised / performed there are people to come to listen - be it INSTRUMENTAL. There is always a myth that instrumental concerts does not pull audience. This was a perfect example to prove otherwise. Congrats to the focussed artists for a wonderful performance and special applause for the percussion duo Sri Ganapathiraman and Sri KV Gopalakrishnan for their excellent enhancement. Kudos to the team which was on the audio as it was pleasing to the ears as the levels were being monitored.

True, it was a great concert. Went upto almost 3 hours. Upto karaharapriya, it was a carnatic duet programme. The hindustani - carnatic jugalbandi came in for Pantuvarali. The karahara priya was very very elaborate. Sri Ganapathiraman was simply superb. He played like tabla during Hindustani part with Hindustani strokes and "gumuks" and quickly changed to Carnatic strokes when accompanying Nadaswaram's turn.

Both the main eartists gave their best. Nadawaram being known for brugas and Parur bani again being known for brugas and fast fingering, it was a great match.

Another noted person in the audience was cleveland Sri Sundaram who listened till the start of Desh piece.

Those who did not attend have really missed something.

Surprising that this concert did not feature in rasikas.org calendar inspite of being announced in rasikas.org

The ambience was excellent. No mic problem, no sceeeching sound, no balance problem

Hope more such concerts with the same combination of artists will be arranged.

I want to congragulate Yessel Narasimhan & his colleagues for presenting the scions of at least THREE GREAT musical lineages. Last time such a thing happened was when Lalgudi-Ramani- Venkataraman- U.Sivaraman and T.K.M. appeared to gether in the Jugulbandhi concerts ably shepherded by LGJ himself....Narmadha represents the PARUR Schiool, & she is a worthy successor to the GREAT Parur Sundaram Iyer himself & her father MSG & M.S.Anantha Rama Iyer raisng the family tradition a notch. Injikudi Subramaniam comes from the illustrious Nadaswaram family & has DISTINGUISHED himself by showing how Nadaswaram can be almost indistinguishable from VOICE- Legendary names like Tiiruvengadu Subramaniam, GNB& SEM as well as their legenday performances come to mind. Ganapathiraman while a mridhangist neverthless has imbibed the GREATNESS of Sethalapathi Balu the immortal main Disciple of THE ONE& ONLY PAPANASAM SIVAN. What a galaxy of star performers who have represented the BEST in creativity & tradition. Sangeethapriya &EVERY ONE who had anything to with this concert are poineers of the highest order & I congragulate& thank him. I am sure the other artist I have not written about is equally great but UNFORTUNATELY I am not competent to write about him. I wish LGJ'S POINEERING INSPIRATION in presenting such cross influences is pursued further so persons like me can get enlightened further.....VKV

K.V. Gopalakrishnan is a very good artiste. I am sure he will be a respected artiste in the near future if not already.

I forgot to mention playing of the kanjira by Gopalakrishnan. It was very good display. The only problem was that in that ensemble the playing of the kanjira was drowned by the playing of the others.Ragjay
