How many hours does it take to come to Chennai from Thanjavur?
Looks like all trains are only in the night. If we want to leave at 12 Noon or 1pm at the MAX, what are the options.
Even buses seem to run only in the night.
Their is one flight from Trichy, but if something goes wrong and that flight is cancelled, there is no other flight till the next day.
If I need to travel by 12 or 1pm to reach Chennai the same evening or night (no later than 9 or 10pm), what are my options?
Are the roads safe for a car travel? I hear a lot of accidents on the roads and I am a little nervous to travel by car. Is there any other option?
People knowlegable on this route, please advice.

Approx 4 hours I suppose! From Trichy Bus stand, it must be two blocks to Trichy Railway Station. There are afternoon buses available from Tanjore to Chennai. Check this out.

When I go I normally hire a taxi. If it rains the roads are just horrendous if not it's alright. Well, to an extent. I usually brave it as I consider that part of my annual pilgrimage back home. Makes it worth all the trouble when you get to Thiruvayaru and sit on the banks and not have to worry about catching the bus / train. Will take you about 6 hours from Thanjavur to Madras, get a big comfy taxi.

alternatively, you could catch the same train at Ariyalur, which it would cross around 3 ish. It takes almost the same time to reach ariyalur, as it would to reach trichy from thanjavur.
Trichy bus stand to Railway Junction is just a stone throw's distance. If you dont have much of a luggage and have some time to kill, you can surely just walk down rockins road to reach junction from the bus stand. the autos would take a little round about route to reach, thanks to some one-way restrictions.
If you leave thanjavur by 12 noon, u can surely reach trichy around 1-1:15 pm and you can just take an auto to reach trichy junction in 5-10 minutes.
i dont know the distance between bus stand and railway station at ariyalur though.
6128 Guruvayur - Egmore Express is scheduled to depart from Trichy at 1:55 pm and from Ariyalur at 2:45 pm. usually, It is found running a little late though. It is supposed to reach Tambaram around 7:10 pm and Egmore only by 8:50 pm. It usually runs late all the way but reaches Egmore on time, thanks to the one hour of what is called as slack time, that is added to its schedule.

Suma- rbharath is right. You can take Rockfort at 8 PM and reach Chennai at 5 AM next day. You can get Tatkal ticket 2 days before. So need to worry about the availability.
You can take a bus from Tanjore (You have Ultra deluxe every 30 minutes throughout the day) which takes 6 hours to reach Chennai. It does not go via Trichy but goes Via Tiruvaiyaru, Jayankondam, Neyveli.....to Tambaram.

In Tamilnadu, bus transport is well organised .There are several ac buses, sleeper buses, deluxe buses, pallavan express train to trichy with dining car, the only problem in train catering is every five minutes you will be disturbed by vendors when you are trying to have a short nap. I he catering service is a necessity as well as a problem. AC chair car is more comfortable , have a nice time. gobilalitha

What ever you do, please refrain from using the road between Sirkazhi to Tindivanam ( via outskirts of Neyveli )...there are no roads..nothing but a national shame....if using private car/taxi ( subject to obtaining licence, another one of sheer nonsense) come via Pondy on the ECR....a lot more desirable journey.

The Chennai-Trichy highway is really good - It should be possible to catch this road from Thanjavur at some point between Trichy and Ariyalur and you can still make it to Chennai in 7 hours time.
I drive to our ancestral village near Sirkazhi once or twice a year but I normally take the ECR-Pondy-Cuddalore-Chidambaram road and the drive is very pleasant.

Try Papanasam ( 16 km from Thiruvaiyaru) and Swamimalai 23km from Thiruvaiyaru. Both have small but good places to stay. Running time is about 30 minutes, given the time of the day. Private autos or taxis always available, once you get to the main busstand. Talk to the hotel people, they can get you cheaper and reliable transport. Lots of other interesting places to visit once there. Good luck.
