Smt Gayathri Girish - Vocal
Shri Mysore Shrikanth - Violin
Shri B Ganapathiraman - Mrudangam
Shri Anirudh Athreya - Kanjira

Date : August 22, 2009
Venue : Narada Gana Sabha Main Hall

1) Thevaram hymn followed by Swami Naan Undan - Nattaikurinji Pada Varnam
2) Adathu Asangathu - Madhyamavathi
3) Thanigai Malayai - Sahana - Ramalinga Swami - AS
4) Antharanga Bhakthi - Shadvidamargini - Koteeswara Iyer
5) Mohanavalli - Manji - Kavi Kunjara Bharathi
6) Kamakshi Gowri - Saveri - Papanasam Sivan - ANST
7) Ragamalika Virutham from Kanthimathi Pillai Tamizh followed by Thedi Unnai - Sindubhairavi
8) Vattu Naduve - Pasuram - Ragamalika

It was a fine concert with quite a few Krithis rarely heard these days. The Pada Varnam was announced to be a composition of Papanasam Sivan. A first time for me. Have heard only the Dhanyasi Varnam of his earlier. The Sahana Alapanai was nicely done. Again, it seemed a well structured song. The pick of the concert to me, though, was the classic Manji Padam. Was done beautifully. Haven't heard it too many times before the main piece in a concert. The main Saveri was good as well. Liked the fairly elaborate final round of first speed Swarams. The violinist played well all along with succinct replies. Liked his replies in the Virutham. The Thani was brief and good too.

Overall, a short and fine concert. The Manji made my day :)

The nATTaikurinji padavarNam is a staple of bahratanATyam repertoires - it is one of Sri Sivan's masterpeices, and there is a version sung by Smt. MLV for Smt. Krishnaveni Lakshmanan that is absolutely breathtaking. We've discussed it earlier at http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... runji.html

I would love to hear this - I think it is from KKB's azhagar kuravanji.

Not forgetting the kAntimatip piLLait tamizh viruttam. Haven't heard it in a long while! I am guessing she sang 'nI varAdirundAl un vaDi vEl vizhikku mai ezhudEn'. The first time I heard KVN sing it, I cried--his soulful rendering of a beautiful verse.

yes... that was it. Was rendered very nicely. Any more details about the composition/composer?

Wow, I must say GG's song selection in concerts is consistently impeccable. Kudos to her. I would love to hear this mAnji.

5) Mohanavalli - Manji - Kavi Kunjara Bharathi
8) Vattu Naduve - Pasuram - Ragamalika
This mAnji was once sung in an exclusive kavi kunjara bharathi thematic concert where GG was a rasika in the crowd , the singer then was her guru Shri TNS. I remember his words "mAnjikku mOONjiyE iLLa (manji rAgam does not have a face) is a myth". This number is very very tough , the thamizh is very hard and you have to stretch every line to bring the mAnji rAga swaroopam.

I am assuming vattu naduvE (pAsuram) was sung in the rAgas as Tanjore S KalyanarAman , which was his favourite then.

The concert was for about 1.5 hours.

Yes, those were the lines. The Virutham also had a nice and subtle Graha Bedam from Sindubhairavi to Tilang and back, if I remember right.

You remember absolutemently right! I thought Tillang was the next raga in the ragamalika and realized it was a Sruthi bedham only when she landed back at S.Bhairavi.
May be it was just too subtle for me :)

seshagopalan sir sings this manji padam very often in his concerts. yes, manji is a very difficult raga to take up and requires great knowledge and experience. many people bring in shades of bhairavi in singing it.

graha bedams in viruttam singing is very common in tns concerts. infact, there are concerts when tns has started a viruttam in one raga and done graha bedam successively resulting in several ragas.
