Shri MS Gopalakrishnan - Violin
Dr M Narmada - Violin
Shri Suresh - Violin
Shri Mannargudi Easwaran - Mrudangam
Shri Guruprasad - Ghatam

Date : September 6, 2009
Venue : PS High School
Sabha : Nadopasana

Am writing the song list from memory. Can't recollect a few.

1) Intha Chouka - Bilahari Adi Tala Varnam
2) ?
3) Shobhillu - Jaganmohini - S
4) Ee Vasudha - Sahana - AS
5) Evaritho - Manavathi
6) Nidhi Chala - Kalyani - ANS
7) (not sure if there was a small filler before this) Nagumomu - Abheri - ANST
8) Manasa Sancharare - Sama
9) Thillana - Sindubhairavi - A
10) Thiruppugazh
11) Mangalam

Attended a concert after a while. The Varnam was very nicely rendered. Hear this rarely these days. Shobhillu was energetic and the Swarams were good. The Manavathi piece was soothing. The Abheri Ragam, handled in its entirety by MSG was beautifully done. The pick of the concert to me, infact was the Abheri and Sindubhairavi Ragam expositions by MSG. The Sindubhairavi Ragam for about 2-3 minutes was very good and the master himself seemed to be soaked in its melody. The Mrudangam accompaniment was brilliant in this concert. The playing for the songs was so appropriate and was in sync with the Sangathis. The Ghatam artiste played a good supportive role.

this was a concert which didnt make an impact on me as the one at SKGS did , two weeks back... But nevertheless was a very good concert , the bilahari varnam is indeed a rarely heard one these days .. Ya there was a filler after kalyAni.. " nenarunchinAnu "... i was very expectant about sahAnA , but let me not comment on the AlApanA played by suresh. Its the same as whatever was written in the previous reviews...

Mannargudi Easwaran sir played as expertly as ever... Its really a treat watching him in action.. The pick of the thani to me was the korvai after the mohrA , which was in the same mathematical combination as thhe niraval line... Guruprasad played well too..

Sorry I didn't make it (Arvind took the trouble to call me up about this concert)... yes, it is always a treat watching Mannargudi Easwaran play; his whole attitude brings additional light to the stage.

How interesting that part of the thani should echo the niraval! Maybe I just haven't had the awareness to realise this in the past; is it often done?

Arvind: too late I noticed that T K Murthy was also playing that evening: it might have given you some difficulty in deciding which concert to attend!

For someone who does not know the intricacies of layam , I feel the same way about Mannargudi Easwaran. He has an unobtrusive but a strongly supportive pleasant presence on stage.
Interesting about the neraval line being echoed in the mrudangam. Though I have heard this here and there, I am suddenly made aware that it really enhances the music and also makes one feel that it is a pleasing way to go about it.

It is quite often played.. especially with vidwAns like Sri . Easwaran.. some concerts with Easwaran/Harishankar were absolute gems.. Sri.Easwaran ( being the wizard of mathematics he is ) would have interpreted beautifully the niraval line or any particular mathematical patterns of swarAs which the main artiste had sung/played and will start the thani or play the final korvai along similar lines , so that the thani sounds/creates an atmosphere like the extension of the song as my revered guru Sri.UKS sir used to say very often.. And needless to say harishankar would add his touch to that and improvise that immortally.. I have seen it in so many concerts of Easwaran sir with ravikiran ,tns , ost , nsg , r.k.srikantan , msg trio here etc...

I like it when the kaNakku is not visibly and audibly so overwhelming that the beauty of the measured steps get to be stomps and a few in the audience get inspired to add their audible beats. When ME plays, there is no hoopla--all the intricacies flow out of his mrudanagam as if the music continues in his playing.

Exactly... thats what i was trying to convey... he makes it look so easy , that it is very difficult to realise what it takes to play like that ..

What can i say about Dr.M.Namada'a violin ?? Sorry i dont have that much knowledge to comment on that. But yeah as someone pointed out in the previous review , her voilin play reflects her dad's brilliant younger days... While its not fair / wont make any sense to compare suresh and narmada here , one can easily say that suresh has a long way to go to catch up with his sister , let alone his dad..

To all friends and Rasikas,
I'am really glad to know your views and appreciations about my mridangam accompainment. What amazed me is that i never thought rasikas would analyze my mathmetical ideas presented.. I feel very happy, more than i receive any award, if it comes from rasikas heart. Thank you for all your support and keep enjoying and spread music.
Regards,
Mannargudi Easwaran.

Arvind is a student of UKS!

I am afraid that the analysis is, mostly, beyond me --- but the enjoyment is open to all!

Nice to see you in our forum: welcome!

His brother (Sam) convinced him to become a member a while ago, IIRC!

He says very little, but chimes in once in a while. He has better things to do than to shoot the breeze. His mrudangam speaks, anyway :)
