Uh??? No, it is by Sivan.

Here is one of the songs Mohan has listed above (Venugana Loluni). It is not one of the all-time best renditions, but it is by Chembai ;)

If you dont have iTunes player, you can use media player classic (http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/win ... alt149.exe) to play m4a/mp4/aac files like the above.

Hopefully no Mangalams for a while in that case...

To add to the Ambujam krishna list:
Kanna Vaa-Ragamalika (though also sung in Maduvanthi)

The list of Oothukkadu's & Purandaradasar's are endless.

TNS tuned this song as a rAga mAlikA when Ambujam Krishna was with us.
Is it necessary to change the ragA (s) of a contemporary composition? I don't know. After all, both the composer and the one who tuned the song would have agreed on it, don't you think?

arasi, I've heard both S.Kalyanaraman & Bombay Jayashree sing it in maduvanthi (though I prefer the popular rAgamAlikA)

I'm guessing Bombay Jayashree added Kalyanaraman's version to her repertoire. I wonder whether Kalyanaraman tuned it himself back then or it was tuned even before his time (perhaps it was tuned at the same time as TNS did)

Arasi,
I assume this is a composition by Ambujam Krishna, right? The reason I ask is that in a commercial recording (in madhuvantI) of this song, the composer is identified as Chitra Balraj...I know that much of the information on the inlay-cards is not worth the paper it is printed on, but I was very curious. Was this then re-tuned in madhuvantI later?

Ravi,
Could it be that Chitra Balraj has another song starting with the same words?
Or, is it one of those inlay card mess ups, as you point out? It is TNS's tune for Ambujam Krishna's composition in kApi, sAma, vasanta, nIlAmbari, surati.
Our Lakshman's book lists a kaNNA vA vA by Bangalore Mukund in sri ranjani and a kaNNA kaNNA too, by him.
There is a N.S.Chidambaram's composition kaNNA kaNNA enRu.

vocalist,
I do not know about the madhuvanti version. Kalyanaraman I hear has sung 'kaNDa nAL mudal' about vElan in madhuvanti (not Ambujam Krishna's).

Thanks Rigapada. Is it a coincidence that Sri Vaishnavas observe Janmashtami today, and you chose to revive this thread by responding on the same day? ;)

In the music program organised on Krishnastami, one song attracted me very much. Hope all of you will like it.

srinivasrgvn wrote:As usual, Krishna Jayanthi is not today, for us Vaishnavites. This occurs most of the times and people get totally confused when we lay footsteps weeks after the first janmAshtami. They are shocked to see us celebrating it after everything is over and then slowly, they realize that we are srIvaishnavAs! =)
While Vaishnavites celebrate the birth thithi for Rama, they celebrate the birth star for Krishna.
Smarthas celebrate birth thithi for both Rama and Krishna.

That is the difference.

Did you make all that living in the U.S.? I envy you. Chellithana aval (vella aval with fresh thengai and ghee) and butter was my humble offering. Haven't had cheedai in years -- wish I could get some in the mail !

It guess it depends on where in the U.S -- I didn't see any -- but then like you said homemade (we made ours in virgin fresh pressed coconut oil, with Coimbatore vennai) in the good old days) is simply the best ...

Here are two videos - slightly different recipes (I love the one with lots of coconut but the other is good too)......................http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya5-v7fTK7E.............http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NkSQPa9IAk

I have heard both - these are 2 different compositions:
a. Bombay Jayashree sings - Kanna Vaa Mani Vaa - kaathirukkum yennai ....
whereas
b. Ambujam Krishna's composition goes like Kanna vaa Mani vanna vaa - kamala padham vaiththu.....

Guess Ambujam Krishna's composition has multiple charanams whereas the one sung by Bombay Jayashree (dunno whether Chitra Balraj is composer or not) has only 1 charnam.
