We had an excellent concert by the Lalgudi duo and the team. This was the first concert of their US tour and what a way to begin! Being a Friday I was wondering what the turnout would be, but surprisingly the hall was packed. Among the audience were non-Indian music students who were curious to listen to carnatic music. It was great to start the concert (and the tour) with a mangaLa raga and a kriti on Lord Ganesha and that of purandaradAsa. I was hoping for a varnam esp. one composed by their father, but they had another plan.
Next was kiraNAvaLi which I was hearing for the first time in a concert- the raga as well as the kriti. This kriti was presented in a very sprightly manner. Enjoyed the back and forth swarakalpana between the duo.
LV presented kEdAragauLa which was neat. She started off at a lower octave and lingered there for a while which gave a different feel to the raga- at some places I was changing my mind to suraTi but knew it was KD only.
Then, LK presented a very beautiful short sketch of a raga which I thought was nAsikAbhUSani but turned out to be rasikapriyA. He got a big applause for this. I enjoyed the kriti very much though I wasn’t familiar at all.
The best of the evening was cArukEsi presented by LK. Just brilliant! The swarakalpana between the two was in a "conversation mode"

You can write composers' names more fully.
For example, Sadashiva Brahmendra and Subrahmanya Bharathi have the same "contraction" in your post as it stands! PD and T are famous enough, though.

Nice report, Suji. Thanks a lot! I heard the Lalgudis play the rasikapriya krithi at MA last year and it was just brilliant. Never heard kEdAragowLa starting in mandra sthayi-- that must've been a unique experience. Kudos for identifying the final kOrvai in the thani-- even that bypasses me frequently

Sounds like a very nice song list. Thanks for the post, Suji Ram.
>> It was announced that he was playing for the first time with this duo.
Patri has played with the Lalgudi siblings several times before (even reviewed on this forum). Perhaps what they meant was this is his first US tour with them.
>> Is there a recording I can find anywhere of the dwijavanti tillAnA?
You can find a recent version at http://www.charsur.com/charsur/index.ph ... ts_id=3183
The classic version (with orchestra etc) is in LGJ's album the Dance of sound from the 70s.
