music of Shakuntala

Was listening to some of the songs from the old movie version Shakuntala (featuring GNB and MSS).

Are the lyrics and melodies by Papanasam Sivan? Many of the tunes do not sound very classical so I have my doubts.

Sakunthalai" (1940).
The film was directed by the 'American Tamil filmmaker', Ellis R Dungan.
With lyrics by Papanasam Sivan music was composed by Sivan, Thuraiyur Rajagopala Sarma and also S. V. Venkataraman..

All the actors samg in their original voices. In fact they were chosen for their proficiency in music There was a popular character actor Serukalathur Sama, who acted as Sakuntalai's father and sang 'endan kanne chendru vaa'unable to control his emotions when sakuntalai accompanied Dushyantan after marriage .As all of us are aware, SVSekhar is the son of SV Venkatraman gobilalitha

The kambhodi here, a more sedate one, is the temple OduvAr thEvAram bANi and it fits very well the mood of the scene.

GNB's Kambhoji is very nice indeed but I wonder if the real Dushyanta ever sat painting a canvas with pallet in hand!

If Dushyanta happens to catch this youtube clip, he may go 'Duh! that makes sense. How come I did not think of that'

When I watch these old clips I have to remind myself that we are dealing with two periods: the ancient period when the movie was made and the very ancient period that the move is about!

I was recently involved in a dance production of Shakuntala. For the music we used the lyrics from the Shakuntala movie (MSS/GNB) but Sangeetha and I have retuned them in a heavier classical mould to suit bharatanatyam. Here is a sample of one of the songs:

Ravi - the dance teacher is a graduate from Kalakshetra but she has learnt dance from other styles as well so I am not too sure how you would classify the style!
