This was one of those concerts that was satisfying in full measure. It was a list that would draw me to the concert by itself.
The GNB Varnam and the Jaganmohini piece set a brisk pace and a soothing rendition of the evergreen Dinamani Vamsha followed. The Harikambhoji set the mood, the serene Sahana enhanced it and the MD masterpiece Kamalamba Navavarnam was the crowning glory. This Sankarabharanam Krithi - so pure, pristine and represents the Ragam in all its essence. Was very well rendered. And my personal favourite Ragam to follow for main made the day one to remember. After a quick HMB Vijayasaraswathi filler, the Thodi was nicely elaborated. The pick of the concert to me, along with the beautiful Sankarabharanam, was the Tanam rendition and the Neraval for the Krithi. Was done very well. The Tanam with Mrudangam accompaniment, was just at the right pace and was absorbing. The violinist’s Tanam returns were very laudable. The Thani that followed continued in the brisk mode and was good. Post main, I liked the Kapi and Sindubhairavi portions in the Virutham. The accompanists played a good supportive role all along.
Overall, a fine concert that I would remember for a long time to come.
