The concert started around 6.45pm, after award function completed. The auditorium was quite full. The concert started with MS trade mark sloka and todi varnam sung in two kalams in pallavi and charanam. After Sri maha ganapathi in gowlai and srimannarayana, purvikalyani alapana was rendered. Smt Radha began the alapana and sung for about a minute till tara shadjam and aishwarya continued. She did right pauses in shadjam and gandharam, she sang a sangathi - g m d S - it looked very uncharacteristic for purvikalyani. Some of the sancharams around tarastyai gandharam were good, and alapana was concluded by Radha. Neraval and swaras including 2nd kala swaras were well rendered. Seethamma mayamma was a surprise selection for me and included chitta swaras. Todi swarajathi was sung well, and kalapramanam was little fast, personally for me. Shankarabharanam alapana was for about 4 minutes and violin return for 2 minutes, with Radha and Aishwarya sharing the alapana, they built it up with nice sangathis. The song was rendered very emotively, was little fast again. They shared neraval and swarams. Radha mami completed the swara with a nice korvai involving entire arohanam, avarohanam some thing like s r g m p d n s -, r g m p d n s -, g m p d n s-, until n s-, s -; G R - S N D-, R S - n d p- , m g - s r g. Thani was good, was for about 5 to 6 minutes, with dayananda mohite throwing up ghatam little bit in the end.

Hamsanandi composition of purandara dasa followed next, preceeded by a virutham sung by Aishwarya. I haven't heard this composition before, not sure whether MS Amma has sung this. After that, few songs were rendered in madhyama shruti, all popularized by MS amma. It was very good to hear our own arasi's composition. The concert concluded with few more favourites of MS amma and mangalam. The concert was for about 1 hour 50 minutes.

Aishwarya has good range in voice, and with right guidance and practice, i am sure she will come up the ladder. All the accompanying artists supported quite well. Despite being ill, and voice related issues, Radha mami gave a nice performance, one could easily understand and appreciate that she wanted to sing somehow on her beloved mother's birthday. Hope to hear Radha mami again in future on unique occasions like this. The crowd movement was somewhat disturbing. They kept on moving out during entire concert, not just during tani.

This particular sancharam is actually one of the special and characteristic ones for purvikalyani. It also affords the performer the opportunity to essay fast passages avoiding the 'vakram' of 'pdps' by extending the same phrase --rgmdS - srgmdS and so on.

Missed the concert due to domestic commitments. It must have been a treat for those who attended.

My understanding is: gmds = gamakakriya pdps= purvikalyani
Dikshitar has only composed in gamakakriya

Thanks, Hari, for that nice review. Incidentally, were you there for the "surprise" at 5PM that Cienu sir alluded to in another thread?
Arasi, item 12! You must be pleased :)

Some coverage in press

http://www.hindu.com/2009/09/17/stories ... 810300.htm

Wondering what is "sri venkateshwara" song!! Even, they can't capture main piece, and wrote as "Sri shankara"

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/256 ... rough.html

Bilahari - i wasn't there at 5pm. I think, it was about soundarya's invocation. Wondering what she sang? Shanki sahita ganapathim or varaveena? Cienu - please let us know.

At 5 pm the National Anthem played was a rare recording of MS Amma herself rendering the same. :)

I thought Gamakakriya is (arohana) - srgmpds and poorvikalyani is - srgmpdps; so, as long as you do not use 'pds' it is fine - 'gmds' sounds good, anyway! It is also just the same (allowed) prayoga with 'p' varja.
Many performers use the 'gmds' prayoga these days.
Maybe - gradually the raga is evolving and mutating?

Can you share the occasion she had sung it for originally?

Bilahari,
Thanks for noticing gAnak kuyil in the list. I am indeed honored that Radha Viswanathan chose to sing my ode to her mother once again!
Apart from missing that I also missed being part of the birthday celebrations in BengaLUru.
Thanks Hari for being there. Others from the forum might have missed it because it was a week day.

Hari
The song list has lot of overlap to your earlier post with your wishlist of ms amma birthday thread.

Arasi,
gAnakKuyiL in valachi looks like it will overtake your indru varuvAnO nAlaiyO in kalyAnavasantham in terms of popularity. ;)

Arasi - when i met radha mami after concert, i have thanked her on your behalf for singing gana kuyil. I was very very happy when they sang the song. The crowd also applauded when line with "subbulakshmi" was rendered.

Rajesh - thanks for checking against my wishlist! I didn't imagine that will be so many common items. While going to concert, i was telling my son about my wishlist of MS amma, and after concert he also noticed this.

Thanks a lot Ravi, Arasi ,Rajesh, Bilahari and Hari. This was sung in the 1963 Music Festival at Edinburgh.

Saundarya sang a short song, "Giridharalal Shyama Gopal " in Yaman Kalyani.

Somehow Hari's premonition that I would be singing the anthem also came true. After the vote of thanks, as per protocol the National Anthem had to be played once again. All of us including the audience were standing in attention but waiting in vain for the anthem to start. After an embarassing 30 seconds, I (being the master of ceremonies) led the way.! :)

cienu,
Thanks for the updates; altogether a fitting tribute to the 'gAnakkuyil'.

arasi, so you are the 'kavikkuyil' who wrote about the 'gAnakkuyil'
What more can you ask for?

Quite appropriate action by you cienu!
MS herself as a spirit accompanied by TS would have appreeciated your initiative!

Nice to know arasi's composition was well received as it should be!

Any audio clips?

Rajesh - thanks for pointing out. It's a gross mistake on my part. I have edited post #1 - didn't I also write like Hindu reporter?

A picture of Saundarya standing on a chair & singing the invocation :)
Her sister Aishwarya and mother Geetha watch keenly.
Prof B.K.Chandrashekar also watches from the stage.

Cienu,
Yes, Indeed! As CML says, great grandmother watching them with pride--mother by their side and grandmothers too, looking at them (off camera), not to forget their father! Aishwarya is as vibrant and absorbed at the same time as she always is.
Makes me think of the other picture where your grandmother blesses Aishwarya after she had heard her sing, and though she was nearly bedridden, the pride and joy in her face is something to see...
