Some time in may 2008 I heard Brinda and that was one of the finest first impressions . Wanted to hear for a long time as I considered from then onwards that she is indeed both talented and very musically daring musician. The second impression was to an extent aligned with the first , nevertheless I also observed quite a few shortcomings in atleast this concert.
I did not hear the first sArangA varnam as I was late. The next KAnadA was sung quite well (joined only the last half). My actual first no was dhanyAsi, this dhanyAsi was sung little fast (few musicians like TRS sing dhanyasi quite fast then say like DKJ )and her round of swaras were very good. I think brinda is at the crossroads of her musical career , where she has to learn more new and difficult numbers and possibly those difficult numbers she may need more time to master , but she had to test her vidwath in this fairly uphill kAsi visAlAshi . Nerval and krithi was sung with the right diction , the swaras were slightly off key at few places .
MuripEmu was a fantastic rendition , she brought in a lot of fast nadaswara pidi sangathis her krithi rendition was well rounded. bilahari was sung as a fast number to me this was a low key rendition she did not gel well with the supporting artists. The main was in kharaharapriya , the alapana was sung with few touch points of manodharma pidi though it was a clean well internalized one. I was not expecting this ST krithi ,again this song was sung quite well, the neraval was good only half the time at few places the rendition was not coming out clean. Swaras were quite gripping but she lost little bit of steam towards the end.
There was two new tukkadas that I heard for the first time , one being a perennial favourite of mine in br saranga and the other a lovely shurutti from TSI. The last thillana was not well rounded .
Rajeev played very well though his sense of proportion in poorvikalyani was a bit long and too much on pathos side .Another young vidwan harish kumar had a lot of UKS nAdham touches he put a great show.
Few shortcomings:
----------------
In first place when I heard her last time a year back I thought she was the top pick in this age of subjunior artists. But today it was possibly a little off day in the sense brinda is capable of much more music .
1. She closes her eyes mostly, only time she opens is during violin return. Eye contact with the audience and fellow artist is very necessary , also at few places with her closing eyes she appeared to sing away from the mike , in a way eye contact is more necessary for mike contact too.
2. The krithis did not have a clean well rounded finish, particularly poorvikalyAni was a sudden brake stop in swaras. She has to concentrate in general in finish of krithis.
Inshort all three musicians in their late teens teamed up well to give a 2 hour and 10 mins concert blessed by TRS and jayalakshmi santhanam (they are the role model rasikas I spot them , wish other vidwans and vidushis take a leaf out of these two great "rasika first-musician second" musicians). This concert was overall very good one.Certainly as always there were moments to cherish as brinda indeed had a lot of musical potential .One has to give her for this great song selection and her choice of few unheard krithis.

Rajesh,
As usual, your one of a kind review.
All musicians are rasikAs first. Yet, how many of them drag themselves out of their homes (given that they are not busy on that day) to listen to a young talent? And the two you mention are not spring chicken! I suppose one thing we can learn from them is that you can stay forever young in rasikatvam and in your music!
You have made me add one more name to my list of young artistes to listen to this season. Didn't know of her until now.
Rajesh, you bring many aspects about performing in your reviews which at first glance don't register. Your gnAnam sparks get obscured in the review which cascades out of you
You mention internalizing. How very important it is for performers! An essential part, even though it may seem obvious to some. This is what makes one a true musician, I think. Something young artistes have to mull over.

Brinda is in her second or third year engineering. Brinda had an early stint in dubai or abudhAbi , to me she came into madras as a well rounded musician (looking at her youtube clips). She is presently learning from smt sugunA varadAchAri.srikant1987 wrote:Whose disciple is Brinda? Is she also a youngster? Good list, with sAranga, dhanyasi, mukhAri and bilahari! (Could've done more manodharmam in these though!) What tAlam are rAmAbhirAma and muripEmu galigE gAdA set to?
rAmAbhirAmA manasu is in aadhi tAlam, other one I dont know(google it or refer the bible).

She told me some time before that she is learning from suguna v and nsg, but on the day of the concert she said she is learning only from suguna v,she is not able to go to classes of both nsg and suguna v.carnaticdasan wrote:Brinda i thought learnt from Smt.Manjula....(Blore)and currently learning from Sri.NSG.Have herad her last year at Karpagam gardens---Good upcoming artist.
I dont know about manjula . BTW a common friend (mahadevan who has posted just few times here with id kovaimaha) told me that her dad worked in dubai , there is always a mention about her first guru which I have not registered it yet.

Ramabhirama is a short sweet kirtana by Tyagaraja. The kirtana is in 1 kalai, with eduppu after 6 counts. Its a longing of Tyagaraja to sing for Rama, as He is being worshipped by Sita herself.

Gavathi, Welcome to the RasikAs forum!
You will get all the encouragement you need here--ignore one or two not so agreeable comments
You will find the love folks have for CM in everything that they talk about here. The extent of exchange of information and ideas is immense.
Your selection of songs was impressive. I had not heard this song of SuddhAnanda BArati before. Thanks for the lyrics. What a wonderful song! Hope more vocalists pick this one up. I find that every song of his that I have heard resonates with lofty thoughts and his love for sangItam.
Look forward to listening to you this season. Let us know your concert dates.

gavathi ,
Welcome brindA, moving forward please type your post in a non - sms language. I have not heard this SNB composition at all. Your diction was very nice in this song.
Arasi,
I understood every phrase meaning excepting the first half of anupallavi "pasikkamudhaagum pinipokkum", isai thamizh at its best.

Now I get it almost excepting the word piNi, I did not know to split this phrase the way suresh had written, can I say it is piNi pOkkum . I always struggle in thamizh despite it being second language , for me passing thamizh paper in school was a nightmare. After all thamizh is only my mother's tongue not my tonguesureshvv wrote:pasikku amudhu aagum, piNi pokkum?rajeshnat wrote: "pasikkamudhaagum pinipokkum".
