Rama Varma's stage appearances seem to be becoming more frequent.

Good! :)

hari:

7. Sri kArunya rUpini amba- Dr BMK

4. sudhA maYim was sung in a little faster pace. There was no chiTaswaram.
5. nannuganna thalli was more leisured.
6. the song of DrBMK in simmendra madhyamam was a welcome change

Almost all the songs were on Devi.

The whole concert was enjoyable.
The prince displayed various aspects of a Concert with extreme ease.
A grahabedham in Amrutha Varshini leading to Malahari during Swara Prastharams was enjoyable.
Even in Simhendramadhyamam a grahabedham was evident, if I'm not wrong.
The Bhajan in Vallabhi, initially i was thinking Prince is going to sing "gOpala gO sutha vallabhIpriya" which was popularised by Dr MBK, but this was a Devi Bhjajan of ST ? set to vallabhi by the prince himself ??

The Thillana in Kuntavarali was sung for almost 8 mins ( ?) made the concert memorable,
apart from Amrutha Varshini & Simmendra Madhyamamam main items.

manjunath - grahabedam in simhendramadhyamam led to bowli. Violinist CNC also did grahabedam.

Jaya jaya devi is a swathi thirunaal bhajan - might be retuned by BMK in vallabi?

Simhendramadhyamam and amrithavarshini alapana had lot of plain notes without gamakam, and during beginning, almost i felt it was keeravani instead of simhendramadhyamam. Sometime, it is becoming sterotype listening to similar style, similar composition. The last concert of prince i attended few months ago in Bangalore, he sang same varnam and thillana, which my son also can recollect! His kalapramanam is very good, and definitely concert is enjoyable. The kuraippu he did in swaraprastharam reducing each time by one swara/matra was similar in last concert. This time, during tani avarthanam, praveen also did same kuraippu. CNC accompanied well, and kind of reproduced many sangathis sung by vocalist. Praveen's playing was bit loud at times and felt like banging the mridhangam, also the hall was small. Overall, his anticipation, along with Giridhar uduppa was very good.

This was my first listening to Prince in a concert.

His voice culture is appreciable and shows his regular practise sessions.

Swaraprastharams we r reminded of Dr BMK.

@s. hari,

Dear Sir,

I was lucky to attend both the concerts of Varmaji - the one at Advaitha and the one at Manava Seva Kendra. The concert at Manava seva Kendra was all-Devi concert as it was Vijayadashmi. He began with the Dr. Balamuralikrishnan pada varnam because it is in praise of the Godess and what better way to begin the concert than this varnam that is dedicated to HER.
It was because of Banglore Praveen's special request that he sang the Thillana. Otherwise he said that he wanted to conclude with the sweet Swathi padam that created such a devout atmosphere. In fact, I remember him asking the organisers if he might sing the thillana and he anounced that he was singing it as Praveen had requested him.
In the same way, for the concert at Adviatha, I had met him after the concert. He said that he sang the Gamabheeranatta padavarnam and the thillana on the special request of accompanists Charulatha and Harikumar. IN fact, even 'Shri Krishnayanu..'was sung on their request.

Wordpecker - thanks for the info, unfortunately, for me, all 3 concerts i attended, i have heard same varnam and thillana!!! Apart from 2 concerts mentioned by you, I attended Dec'08 concert below. Also, did you notice the kuriappu he did in swarakalpana in advaita and manasa seva kendra? They are very similar.

Aren't other varnams dedicated to Devi? How about Mathe in kamas (HMB) and Dayanidhe in begada (shayma sastri)? I am not cribbing however.

Although Varma might be repeating this particular Varnam I take it as a good sign that Dr.BMK's music is finally being popularized by a worthy disciple. After the Trinity, I have rarely come across a composer whose lyrical content, musical content and spiritual content is so brilliant and different from the trinity's. After the trinity and prior to Dr.BMK most of the compositions were similar to the trinity's. If you take a look at his Thillanas, one can immediately see that they are very different from most of the thillanas. Dr.BMK's thillanas have very rich lyrical content unlike others where they are usually dedicated/in the name of a certain person. His Kadanakuthuhalam, Kunthalavarali, and the less heard Garudadhwani are brilliant. And I think Dr.BMK has a very worthy disciple in Varma for popularising these wonderful compositions. I had never heard of Garudadhwani till I got to know of Varma. And most of the Varma's concerts that I have attended I felt none of the renditions of the same compositions were similar as he improvises very well. I am posting a link to his garudadhwani. You can see for yourself how wonderful it is.

There was a time last year when my younger daughter would refuse to sleep until I played the same Garudadhwani Thillana, every night. :)

interesting!! I haven't heard garudadwani tillana before.. For me, benchmark for garudadwani is T.K.Rangachari's rendition of tatvameruga tarama... What a rendition...

Brilliant Garudadhwani Thillana by Prince !

hari- U please provide the link to TKR's garudadwhani rendition.

Thathvameruga tharama(T) is the popular song in this raga. KVN has also sung this.
