D.Pasupathi@MA (Mini) on Oct 15th,2009
--------------------------------------

Accompanied by a lady sishya -gnana???? (not sure), vv ravi -violin ,trichur narendran - mrudangam and pudukottai rAmachanran - ghatam

1979 , the year was a watershed year when Sp Balasubramaniam got a national award for the song shankarA of the movie shankarabharanam tuned by kv mahadevan . But in that movie there was a brilliant carnatic song brochEvArevarurA ninnu vina in ,,,,, well it took possibly the year 1983 for me to see this movie and got hooked without knowing that there is something called carnatic music.Infact only at the end of 1980's I must have known there is a vaggeyakkara by name 'mysore vasudevacharya' after I bought an audio casette of maharajapuram santhanam singing exclusive acharyA's compositions.

This influence of ,,,, is just not there only to me . Around 08:30 pm there was an elderly gentleman who must be in the age group of cmlover got up and asked D.Pasupathi to sing this song. D.Pasupathi did sing excellently this number from anupallavi

10. brochEvArevarurA ninnu vina raghuvarA - ,,,, - from the movie shankarabharanam ;)

Flash back before khamAs:
--------------------------------
D.Pasupathi , I remember :cool:karni writing about him few years back in a thread that it was a great experience to hearing D.Pasupathi. I do know this singer is old and has a connection with MDR-kalakshetra-tiger and of course he has also learnt from the acharya himself.

Late to make the sandiego man happy as it was bilahari with two crisp round of citta swaras. This kAmbOdhi is not the usual 5th gear overdrive mode , it just kAmbOdhi flavour in and out in say a kalApramanam of an average s'bharanam with a nice topping of alApanai.

Struggled struggled struggled to identify the mahAtmulE as rishabapriya, I was thinking he was more going closer to shanmughapriya, the swaras were nice. Another mini round of struggle started was that atAnA or a touch of shree rAgam , it took few more cycles for me to make up hey it is darbAr, he sang beautifully and all along kept up the tempo.

The bhairavi was a main, to an extent this acharya has been influenced heavily with dikshitar, while lambodharaya had a coating of subramanyAya namastE of MD, this had a coat of bala gOpAla of MD. bhairavi rAga was neatly handled with a long round of swaras as it was main

All fillers were sung with gusto, infact I loved each and every one of them, particularly the reetigowlai and ranjani the most. Some gentleman asked for the gokula nilaya and out popped abheri or bhimplas (when googling I found both references, Lji help). The presentation was clean with a thillana in shuruTTi

1.....
2. Shri chamundEshvari palaya mAm - Bilahari
3. LambOdharam avalAmbE (R) - Kambhodhi

4. mahAtmulE ni teliyalEru(S) - rishabapriya
5. rAghavendra guru (R,cittaswaras)- darbAr
6. bAlam gopAlam akhilaloka (R S T)-bhairavi

7. devAdi deva shree vAsudeva - sunnOdhaviNOdhini
8. Mama hridaye vihara(R) - reetigowlai
9. devaki tanaya vAsudeva - pushpalatikA

11. PranamAmyaham shri prananAtham - ranjani
12. gokula nilaya kripAlaya - Bhimpalas?? or Abheri??

13. thillAnA "tada ri tana... karuniNchu"- shuruTTi

Few shortcomings:
---------------
1.D.pasupathi was accompanied by a lady sishya , she sang well but at few places she was little lost in her voice and shruthi. But nevertheless it was almost this elderly vidwan with a sound vidwat and a great manly voice who was leading the show.

2. I did not put numbers in minutes of each R N S , because shri pasupathi said he was concentrating more on singing more numbers, nevertheless bearing the absence of neraval it was all fine.Possibly neraval of vasudevacharya is something I missed here

Accompanist:
----------
I did notice all along this senior vidwan was putting thalam not in his lap but always with his hands, but certainly I loved that . In fact there was superb sense of anticipation from trichur narendran and pudukottai ramachandran and they gelled beautifully, particularly narendran was indeed perfect. The violinist was good , especially his play in darbAr and kAmbOdhi stood out loftily in alApanai.

About MA-Mini and this series:
----------------------------
For about last 6 or 7 months every month academy organizes this exclusive one vaggeyakkara concert. I have attended narayana theerthar, purandaradasar, etc . Each of that is well organized and one can appreciate the organizers.

But I have a crib there, around 8:30 pm or so always one of the organizers (pAppu venugopal rao ) just gets up from the first row and tries to hand over the usual payment envelope , in that the musicians are just not allowed to cover at peace their usual round of last few tukkadas , in this concert shri pasupathi had few requests at the end from khamas so every time he had to have a little difficulty in pushing few numbers at the end . Well I am not casting any blame or ranting on the organizers like rao(they are doing great service), but certainly they can stay seated till the end until the mangalam is sung and completed and then they can go and give the envelope.

Finally:
--------
Overall a very good to excellent concert for close to 2 hours and 5 minutes(06:45pm to 08:50pm). This was my first experience of pasupathi and how many mahAnubhAvulus i am discovering .

Rajesh

If you want to know more about Sri Pasupathi Sir, perhaps, you should talk to Sri Easwaran...it was 10th Oct 1958, and he was 12. Pasupathi Sir sang for Anna's arangetram at Sri Thiagraja Swami Samajam in Mylapore, accompanied by Sri Tiruvannamalai Ramamurthi Sir on violin. If anna is one of the front ranking mridangam artist to-day, it is primarily due to Mahanubhavulu Sri Pasupathi Sir and other respectable elders who have moulded him to such maturity.

Sri Pasupathi is a great artist with a great sweet voice. He spent considerable number of years in the Tirupathi serving as Principal in the Music College and instrumental in tuning Annamacharya compositions in the league of Nedunuri. A multifaceted artist who can play Veena and also leant Natyam. His speciality is MV and annamacharya Kritis and popularised them.

Sam,
Good to hear that.
Normally, we stop with the 'who is his guru?' question. Many other factors shape an artiste. ME's merits as a mrudangist were nurtured by many influences like this--the same with other performers too. Then again, there are two kinds of performers--the ones who are proud of their heritage, gurus and others who helped and encouraged them. The other kind, well, one needn't go into that :)

It is nice to see this veteran singer back on concert stage. Sometime back, we had asked him for one of our rasikas concerts, which he had turned down, citing health reasons. hope to listen to him again sometime.
